Noukone Thammavongsa was too excited to sleep Thursday night.

A $7.8-million lottery win does that.

Maybe, in his excitement, the Thorndale-area man also forgot to tell his family, who immigrated here from Laos.

"He did?" brother Oudom, 52, excitedly asked yesterday about his sibling's big win.

"I didn't know. I saw him yesterday at the hospital," where their father is recovering from a stroke, "and he didn't say anything."

"We've been taking turns there with my father."

Thammavongsa became the area's newest multi-millionaire after claiming Wednesday's Lotto 6/49 jackpot

Yesterday, he described for lottery officials his reaction after discovering his good fortune. "I started shaking," he said. "I could not fall asleep after that. What a long night it was. I need some sleep."

Thammavongsa, 43, is a self-employed carpenter. He and his wife, Christine, have one daughter.

With his windfall, Thammavongsa plans to pay off debt, take a vacation and put some money away toward his daughter's education.

"I plan to work less," added Thammavongsa, who bought the winning ticket at Thorndale Food Market on King Street.

No one at the store, where there was a power failure yesterday, would comment.

A Jumbo of a Win for Mom & Daughter

Schenectady – Viengkham Kounnavong and her daughter, Anna Vargas, vowed to split their Lottery winnings if they ever hit the jackpot. Their promise recently became a reality when they purchased the popular Jumbo Bucks Instant game ticket at Wegman’s, their local grocery store.

Kounnavong purchased the jackpot winning ticket from a New York Lottery vending machine at the grocery store. She said she knew it was going to be a winner when she saw that the selection button for that particular ticket wasn’t originally lit like all of the other tickets, but then lit up while she was making her selection. Vargas couldn’t be more thrilled with her mother’s selection of the elephant themed Instant game ticket.

Mother and daughter both plan to take a trip to Kounnavong’s native home, Laos in Southeast Asia, dubbed "the land of a million elephants" by King Fa Ngum in 1353 A.D. Kounnavong and her husband, Vargas’ father, moved to the United States after the Vietnam War 25 years ago. The 46 year old Kounnavong, mother of three, shares the prize with her oldest daughter, 24 year old Vargas, who has a daughter of her own. Both mother and daughter plan to continue working, Vargas in retail and Kounnavong as an assembly worker at a local company.

Jumbo Bucks is a $5 Instant game ticket with 12 chances to win up to $1 million. Overall odds of winning a prize on the Jumbo Bucks game are 1 in 4.92. Mother and daughter purchased their winning ticket at Wegman’s, 2599 W. Henrietta Road, Rochester. In addition to announcing the first Rochester millionaires of 2005, the New York Lottery also recognized Wegman’s as the #1 retailer in lottery sales by location for 2004.

SEATTLE - A woman who grew up in a Laotian orphanage in the turbulent 1960s and '70s says she plans to donate part of a $55 million lottery jackpot she and her husband won to the people who raised her.

Xia Rattanakone said she also plans to return to Laos to search for her birth family.

"I don't know my parents," she said after the couple claimed their winnings on Monday. "That is my wish, to find them."

Rattanakone, 44, came to the United States in 1979 after being adopted by an American family.

She and her husband, Sommay Rattanakone, 52, said they plan to retire from their jobs, his as an aide in the Seattle Public Schools and her's as a temporary worker at Nintendo of America, and travel.

Neither has been back to Laos since they moved to the United States, and returning for a visit is a top priority, they said. During that visit, they plan to donate some of the money to the Catholic orphanage where Xia Rattanakone was raised.

They also plan to buy a new home and car and put aside college money for their two sons, ages 20 and 14.

The couple bought the winning Mega Millions ticket last week at a supermarket and opted for a lump-sum payment. They stand to receive about $23 million after taxes.

Sommay Rattanakone picked up the list of winning numbers on Wednesday, a day after the drawing, but decided to take a nap before checking the ticket. His wife couldn't wait.

"I heard her scream, 'We won,'" he recalled.

"We couldn't believe it," she said. "I prayed for this. It is a dream come true."

The United States: The Land of 8.9 Million Millionaires

Adjust font-size: +
More: Millionaires United States Economy Million U.s. Or United States
The United States has often been referred to as the only country in the world with a million millionaires. Recent figures show that this number is actually much higher. Dr. Bill Belew of PanAsianBizreports that

the U.S. has 8.9 million households worth at least 1 million dollars. This is compared to China with 300,000 millionaires and Russia with 88,000.

The millionaires are the prime movers of the economy; they are the Atlases that hold it up and fuel its progress through vast investments. Russia and China both have a rising class of millionaires-- and Russia has 3 times more millionaires per capita than China. This is promising for both countries' economic future-- which will be beneficial for the rest of the world as well, as it will result in increased exports of valuable goods and services from these countries.

Yet this news should also allay fears about the United States losing its "competition" with dynamic developing countries like China. The United States outnumbers China by a factor of about 30 in the absolute number of its millionaires and by more than 100 in the number of millionaires per capita. Chinese millionaires are prospering, but they will have to do from 30 to 100 times better to even possibly catch up with the United States! Americans have no reason for fearing their country's displacement from the position of the number-one economic power in the world.

America will not lose because of globalization; trade with the Western world has helped aspiring entrepreneurs in Russia and China become millionaires. Trade with Russia and China could help more aspiring American businessmen become millionaires as well. What is good for the millionaires is good for everyone else-- if their money was earned through honest work and commerce, not coercion or political exploitation.

I respect people who became millionaires from their hard work and innovative minds, instead of those who rely on chance (in lottos and sweepstakes). People who make things happen should be role models for everyone. But people who just keep hoping for miracles from nothing are just not the best role models.
