Looking to go to Laos this december and I'm sure there are better alternatives to online booking sites like Orbitz, Travelocity, Priceline, etc., which are quoting me $3000 for airfare.
I recall hearing rumors about travel agencies being able to get good deals, but always dismissed them considering we can do the same on the internet now-a-days.
Go directly to the airline's websites (i.e. Thai Airways or China, China Eastern airlines). Instead of going directly to Laos, try going to Bangkok first and then fly domestic Thai airlines to Udon which is very close to Vientiane. I save a lot of money this way. Good luck and enjoy your trip!
