Understanding the Duration of a Colonoscopy: What to Expect
Permalink

When considering a colonoscopy, many wonder, How long does a colonoscopy take? The entire process can be broken down into three main phases: preparation, the procedure itself, and recovery.

Preparation usually starts a day or two before the actual procedure. This involves following a special diet and taking a laxative to clear the bowel, which can take several hours. The day of the colonoscopy, the procedure itself typically lasts between 30 to 60 minutes. During this time, a doctor will insert a flexible tube with a camera into the colon to check for abnormalities.

Post-procedure recovery is relatively quick, often taking about 30 minutes to an hour. During this time, the patient will rest in a recovery room to ensure the sedative wears off safely. Most people can resume normal activities the following day, although it’s advisable to avoid strenuous activities for a day or two.

In summary, while the actual colonoscopy takes less than an hour, the overall process, including preparation and recovery, spans a couple of days. Understanding these time frames can help patients plan accordingly and approach their colonoscopy with confidence.
