The gay bar of Laos

Asian country’s one sanctuary of gay culture
TRAVEL_Laotian_gay_bar.jpg
Corey Pierce

Deep in the mountains of Indochina, on the shores of the mighty Mekong River, in the UNESCO World Heritage site of Luang Prabang where every city block features at least two Buddhist temples, each more beautiful than the last, sits the only gay bar east of Thailand. Khop Chai isn’t remarkable at first. It’s a tiny bar that a straight man like me can spend 10 minutes in before realizing all the patrons are male. Though gay-friendly hangouts aren't rare in neighbouring Vietnam and Cambodia, an outright “out” venue is nearly unheard of. Khop Chai is so rare that if you meet a gay man who has visited Laos, odds are he’s frequented this bar.

Khop Chai is decorated with the typical Asian combination of bamboo and garishness. Rope lights outline every available surface and bright disco lights accompany shrill dance music that blares into the street. Inside, tiny, gay Laotians flirt shamelessly with middle-aged westerners. Drinks are cheap, the food is good and there is always a local willing to share my table and ask me on a date. There is not, it seems, any fear of the country’s totalitarian government among these gay men.

In a way it is safer to be “out” in one of the world's last remaining communist countries than in small town North America. “Geoff,” the American-born co-owner, asked me not to use his real name – not for fear of Laotian authorities, but so his clients back in the U.S. won’t find out his orientation. (Being a foreigner, Geoff really can't own anything in The People's Democratic Republic of Laos, so he shares both businesses with his Laotian boyfriend).

Still, an openly gay business walks a tightrope in Laos. Khop Chai used to be called “The Cruising Gate” until Geoff bought it from the previous owner. When it changed hands, the Communist government told Geoff this name was no longer permissible. With Thailand's infamous sex trade right across the border, the government is becoming extremely sensitive to anything that might smack of prostitution, male or otherwise. However, its not just because Khop Chai is a gay bar that the name had to change. The government is sensitive to all sorts of things. For example Geoff's second operation, the Lao Lao Beer Garden was ordered to remove the word “beer” from its name so as not to appear decadent. (Incidentally, the Lao Lao Garden boasts the nicest patio and one of the tastiest menus in the city; beer is also available.)

Geoff returns to the U.S. every few months to maintain his tax-accountancy business, which is what really pays his bills. The two bars turn a small, but marginal profit, essentially paying for little more than Geoff's expenses while in Laos (though in fairness, he does well by Laotian standards).

It’s the sexual liberation in a country with no free rights that really attracts him. “How can you be in the closet in a country where there is no closet?” he asks me. Like neighbouring Thailand, the perception in the West is that Laos has a long history of tolerance when it comes to gay culture. This is not quite true. In a country where family is prized above all else and provides a necessary social safety net, a gay man who will never have children is viewed as a second-class citizen. A lady-boy (or kathoey, a gay male cross-dresser who is attracted towards men who are not considered to be gay) in contrast, provides a function — namely giving married men a way to have out-of-wedlock sexual intercourse without the danger of shaming the family with a bastard child. There is little or no shame in being a lady-boy, and the devout Buddhist culture seems to encourage tolerance towards gay culture.

Despite the government's attempts to quell prostitution, the economic imbalance makes something like it unavoidable. The average Laotian cannot afford to eat out at a restaurant, and the waiters make little more than a pittance. Gay western men arrive at Khop Chai with wallets full of bills and are served by waiters with bills to pay. In any relationship that develops, the Laotian male is not going to be the one treating his western date to dinner, wine and maybe a new pair of shoes. Its not prostitution by any means, but money, as the saying goes, is power.

This situation was epitomized one night around an open fire at the Lao Lao Garden. I found the waiter who had been flirting with me over yesterday's lunch sitting beside a 50-something American so drunk he could barely keep his eyes open. My flirty waiter's eyes brightened as I asked him a few questions, until his date wrapped a thorny forearm around his waist and growled, “he’s mine.” The obedience in my young waiter’s eyes was disturbing. That might be the harsh reality of the evenings, but in the daylight hours Khop Chai reveals its real purpose — it’s not only a workplace, but a refuge and hangout as well.

On my last day I meet two young waiters who epitomize this for me. They met in a monastery as young teens. Unable to pursue their relationship in their small village, as adults they chose instead to remain in Luang Prabang and work at Khop Chai. Geoff's operations are a gay version of the traditional Asian restaurant model — most are subsistence affairs designed to employ as many family members as possible. He employs over a dozen people, and one really gets the sense that they are a family of sorts, held together not by blood but by a need to maintain a corner of the city they can call their own.

Such hatred of gays is an illness characterised by symptoms such as ignorance of scientific facts, lack of understanding of human biology, a heart lacking kindness, & a mind full of intolerance.

HIV & AIDS doesn't care whether you're straight or gay or bisexual. It can spread from husband to wife, boyfriend to girlfriend, woman to man, man to woman, man to man, patient to doctor/nurse/dentist, mother to baby, blood donor to recipient, etc. If HIV was a 'gay problem', why are there all those female AIDS patients at the hospitals in Vientiane & Savannakhet?

The Lao government can try to 'stop gays', but Laos will still face a HIV epidemic as long as Lao men continue to practice unsafe sex with prostitutes, & Lao women (& even men) continue to be forced/lured into the sex trade in Laos, Yunnan & Thailand.

It's wrong to say it's a sickness, I don't see anything wrong with being gay and this's coming from a straight guy. Like who ever, love who ever... it doesn't hurt me, the things that bothers me are people who looks down upon eachother, corrupt gov., war and much more.

Sick are people like rapist, serial killers, child molester, etc.
Anyway just needs to take care of them self and try not to catch HIV, gay aren't the only one passing around, prostitutes, drug users, and sadly medical accidents. Only two possible way I know to get affect is through sexual intercourse and open wound contact w/ blood.

1. Well, this topic is talking about "Gay Bar" not about "Gay".
2. Yes, being Gay is not the sickness or sth bad, and everyone can be infected HIV if they are not becareful.
- BUT, situation in Tourist Site like Luangprabang in Laos or Pattaya in Thailand is different form two general issues. Gay Bar becomes a place for male sexual servants seeking for earning, since those local boys know they are high demand from western tourists. Some guys does not even realize they are gay or not, but only know that having sex with gay make money.... according to untitle survey found lots of KaTheuy in Luangprabang and those are at risk infected HIV, those are young.

Again, nothing wrong with Gay but something wrong with people who are not but pretending to be gay for some reasons. And those never stop in a gay, but having several partners.

Hello all,

I was laughing when I see this topic and I saw some commends said that being a gay is sickness???. Well, I am a Lao guy and now studying in Australia and spent many years to find myself that I am happier being with a person with same sex.

As for the commendation said that “gay is sickness”. Well, if a gay guy is sick, then he has to seek the doctor and get a cure, right? Then what happen if the doctor is gay, too where should he seek the cure for himself?

And some posted that gay can spread to others? Why is that? If we can pass on to others, then there must be a school somewhere teaching the boys being gay, is that what you mean? Are there any school learning to be a gay?

We born to be gay, not learning from a University to be gay…. And nothing to do about it and no one can stop it even what power you have. Do you know what? Even Vatican city there is still gay there…..

So, please do not try to be homo phobia. There are many gays are contributing to the development of the country. If you want to know more about this, please let me know I am happy to help you to obtain better information about gay. My name is Victor and has the same meaning in Lao name.  I have been working with gay community in Laos for a while, so don’t be hesitate to contact me.

Regards

Victor

if you are on the quest of ridding HIV from the world, you can it the gentle way.confuse

for example,confuse

killing ppl will not get rid of the virus.
education will prevent and slow the spread and one day we will have a cure - end of problem.

also, without the need of super power, you can do something like giving yourself to the service of spreading sex education, training, fact awareness...
those who have the least knowledge tend to be the most hateful, paranoid, and irrational.confuse

besides, some super heros have super strong physical strength
and only come to find out that it is the brain faculty that controls those body tissues, which control your physical power.
the knowledge retain within the brain is what will help to save the day yes?confuse

Landlocked, communist Laos has its isolation to thank for keeping the global AIDS epidemic at bay while its Southeast Asian neighbors struggle with some of the highest HIV infection rates in the world. But the United Nations fears attempts by the country to adopt a market economy and open up to the outside world could spark a surge in transmissions of HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. "Laos has been the quiet achiever at keeping the spread of HIV at bay, but this could all change," Tony Lisle, a top UNAIDS official in Southeast Asia, told Reuters in an interview. "The country is facing the same issues that its neighbors have faced in the past, and the threat of HIV/AIDS is as big as ever. As the pace of development increases, so does the AIDS risk." A UN-World Health Organization report at the end of 2001 said Laos had an HIV infection rate of 0.04 percent of adults between the ages of 15 and 49 -- a fraction of the equivalent rate of 2.7 percent in Cambodia and 1.8 percent in Thailand. Laos has around 5.4 million people. The UN said Laos has hardly any migrant workers, few intravenous drug users and the government had successfully educated its people about the disease when infections began to rise in the mid-1990s. Laos is one of the world's last remaining communist countries, and since the demise of the Soviet Union in 1991 the secretive state's economy has struggled. The nation's currency, the kip, lost 90 percent of its value against the U.S. dollar in the 1997-98 Asian financial crisis. In a bid to boost its fragile economy, Laos has promoted tourism and improved trade ties with its neighbors. ROAD TO SEX New roads are planned to link Laos with Thailand, Vietnam and China. A domestic north-south route is also proposed. But the social implications of this could be high. The UN fears improved roads could bring disease along with foreign income. "More truck drivers and construction workers will come across the borders -- single men or men living away from their families --which will inevitably increase the number of people working in the domestic sex industry," Lisle said. "Unlike its neighbors, Laos doesn't have a large sex-worker population or a large client base, but this could all change." Until the mid-1990s, the government restricted movement between provinces. Wealthy individuals and businessmen were the only people allowed to leave the country. But poverty means large numbers of people are expected to travel to China and Thailand to fish or work on building sites -- and the UN says many are likely to be lured toward prostitution. "Migrant workers may return to the country and spread the disease, especially those who've worked in the sex industry," Lisle said. "And those who stay in the country will inevitably move to the bigger towns and cities. The temptation is there for Laotian women to work in the sex industry and earn more money to support their families."

The population of Luang Prabang is 26,000 (that's over 1,000 Gay)

The population of the capital city of Vientiane is over 200,000 (that's 8,000 Gay).

Bars & Clubs :

Blue Cool (mixed) Located on the right side of the road as you drive on Luangprabang Rd from the airport to Novotel. New club opened by the former owner of Pack Luck.Dong Tan Palace Hotel nightclub On the river front, east of the city center. Many gays after everywhere else in the city closes at midnight, as it's open until at least 2am every night.GQ On the same street as the InterCity and Orchid hotel, which is a side street from the road along the Mekong river, Fa Ngum Rd."GQ is the new gay bar in Vientiane. i don't understand why it bothers some people so much.  just like you can't control the fact that you prefer women, they can't control the fact that they prefer men.  let them be...  have you been raped by a gay?  is that why you're so angry at them?

Gay is not a sickness but a sexual orientation. There's nothing wrong with being gay, and it is really an offensive stereotype that you accused us of being the main reason AIDS is widespread. And if homosexuality is more acceptable, such tragedy could be avoided, since Gay ppl could live as couples (monogamy). BUT I certainly do not expect some one with narrow mind like you to understand. GO **** YOURSELF...I am only rude to persons who are rude to me, LOL.

I don't care if people want to be gay/lesbian. However, I don't think it should be encouraged or praised. We should try to understand it and embrace it since it's always been a part of human evolution/history although now it is more open, probably due to the internet/media making people more aware of what it means to be gay. Even in the animal kingdom there is evidence of homosexuality so it is not just isolated to humans, nor would I call it a "disease". I think I would call it more of a preference if we were going to label it at all.

We all know that aids probably came from a monkey who bit a human and thus mutated the virus into what we now call aids/hiv. Just like swine/bird flu or just about any other virus/disease you can think of, it didn't just come from a gay person. Perhaps if one has homophobia or "hatred" towards gays then they should go and get cured of their "disease" by actually talking to a gay person and trying to understand them instead of "fearing" them. In the history of humankind, we have made these mistakes many times and still never really learn from them. When man doesn't understand something, he/she is scared of it and treats it like an enemy, we fear the unknown. But once we understand it and find the truth of the matter, it becomes common knowledge and even discussed at the dinner table.

All this being said though, I said I don't encourage the whole idea of being gay. I only accept that it does exist in this world and we should not be ignorant of it.

The reasons why I say we shouldn't encourage it is for the following:

1 - Reproduction of the species. If we all became gay, then the human species would be no more. Need a sperm from a male, need an egg from a female. We are not capable/designed for asexual reproduction (yet). We cannot rely on in vitro fertilization cause not everyone is willing to donate their kids (sperm/egg) to let others raise.

2 - Most developed countries have an underlying constitution that adopts procreation of its citizens. This basically means it supports a society that engages in activities/decisions that allow its citizens to prosper by continuity of its population, not self destruction. Birth rates are already decreasing in many countries like Japan.

3 - Although I am not religious, it does defy many religious theories/doctrines/ideologies. For example, in US they debate about gay marriage and US is still a god fearing country, although changing slowly. Middle east is worst, they kill you if you're gay. Chinese are against it and others have some anti-sentiments towards being gay. I don't think these religions/beliefs will ever disappear since they've already been here this long and people are willing to die over it but it is still an obstacle to overcome.

My personal opinions of "gay" are that sometimes I find it annoying when being gay is so hyped up or flaunted. I am not gay myself but it is annoying when it is thrown in my face in the media and everywhere. Okay you people are gay, so what, let's move on and continue with our normal lives already. Many places that I've gone on vacation has been somewhat ruined by "sex tourists" that are usually gay or many gay places that dominate the entire scene. Walk down a road in some places in Thailand and be prepared to get smothered by lady boys trying to hump you. Worse is if you don't even know they are gay or ladyboys and you want to throw up after you realize it. Walk into a public washroom and you don't know what to expect anymore, might be some gay/lesbian in there looking at your thingy. If I ever have kids, I am looking forward to having grandchildren someday that are actually mine. Would this happen if my children are gay, might end up like Micheal Jackson and get a donor kid, but is that the same thing, really. Don't get me wrong, I have friends who are gay, they are good people but I prefer my lifestyle too of being straight. On a positive side, at least with guys being gay, it leaves more women for me, although in Thailand I had a bet going with a friend to see how many lesbian couples I can count versus gay guy couples that walked by us in the next 30 mins. I counted 9 toms while she counted 12 gays so I might be out of luck trying to score a straight female there if they are all toms. Now I got to compete with toms for women, life is unfair, haha.
