as my friends visited there and told me, Laos is not the cheapest one for tourism...food, guesthouse are expensive ...

agree!!!!! all the guesthouses and hotels are very expensive and they charge you by US dollar... and sometimes if they know that you come from another country then they will charge you more than the usual price

It depends on where you go and how you act. If you are expecting great deals in downtown Vientiane, then you will be sadly mistaken like many people are. Of course tourist areas will be more expensive. If business can charge what they do and people are still willing to pay for it, then they have no reason to stop.

And when are these rates? I was in Laos only in 2008, the cost is 30-50% more than that. I travelled the countryside. Yes, traveling in Laos is retively cheaper but not that cheap as you mentioned here. This can be misleading. I advise travellers should always have contingency funds.

I agree I was in Vientiane over Xmas and the restraunts are more expensive than Thailand
