Laos to gives up import of cement in the next two years


(KPL) In the next two years, after completing a cement factory in Khammouane province in March 2007, Laos is not necessary to import cement from overseas, said this month Mr Lee, Managing Director of Lao Cement Industry Company.

The biggest cement factory worth US$68 million with a daily production capacity of 2,500 tonnes of Red Lion brand cement, or 800,000 tonnes a year.

“Ninety percent of raw materials for the factory is in the country,” said Mr Lee.

The company plans to export around 200,000 tones a year to neighboring Thailand.

Lao Cement Industry Company is joint venture investment project in which 60% of the shares owned by Chinese investors, 8% by KOLAO Company and the rest by local investors.
The factory is being constructed on over 80 ha in Nalao village, Mahaxay district of Khammuan province.
