Do miss Apone Lao really promote Lao culture ?

I have a question.
If i am not mistake, miss Apone Lao will help promote Lao culture both inside and outside the country, but i hardly hear any of their activities even inside the country. Is this contest just a fashion trend ? or it has a deeper meaning to our national pride ?

by the way, if you want to apply for this, here goes the details

Young women around the country are seeking out applications for the second Miss Apone Lao contest, with the final scheduled for September 22. Lao women hoping to be chosen the next Miss Apone Laos began filling in their applications for the country's biggest beauty contest at the offices of the K&C Company Ltd yesterday in Vientiane . “This is the first time I've applied to be in any beauty contest, and it's quite exciting,” said Miss Chinda Sidsengchan, 18, who studies at the National University of Laos. Another applicant, Ms Chindavone Vongsa, a student from a private college in Vientiane and also 18, said she came along because her sister encouraged her to enter the contest. She said she hopes to express her personal strengths through the contest. “I really don't know if I'm going to get to the final round, but I know for sure that I will do my best to reach the next round of interviews,” Ms Chindavone said. Applicants for Miss Apone 2007 need to be between 18 and 25. Organisers said other requirements for successful contestants include good manners, behaviour and attitude. They will need to be clever and friendly and have no plans for marriage in the next year. Applicants should be in good health and should not have had cosmetic surgery, the organisers stipulated. The woman chosen as Miss Apone 2007 will receive 30 million kip in cash, a sash and other prizes. She will also act as a Lao cultural ambassador, sharing Lao culture and traditions nationally and internationally. The top six finalists will be asked to pose for Beerlao's 2008 calendar. The contest is being organised in collaboration with K&C Company Ltd and the Lao Women's Union . Women applying from outside Vientiane can register at designated locations on specific dates. Applicants in Savannakhet province can register at Houngthip Hotel from June 20 to 23. Women in the southern province of Champassak can enter at the Champa Palace from June 20 to 23, while in the northern province of Luang Prabang applications will take place at the Villa Santi Hotel from July 2 to 5. Last year, Miss Keochinda Keosouliya, from Champassak province, was chosen as the first winner of the contest.

Every country in the world has beauty contests. There is nothing original about miss apone lao. Just the name is Lao. Women are just Lao 'jewelry' objects of male desire. When Laos has a female president, then you can say women promote Lao culture.
