Nakai - emerging tourist attraction



(KPL) Nakai-Nam Theun 2’s Protected Area in Nakai district of central Khammouane province could become one of the most interesting natural tourism site of the country.

The area has been known as the richest natural diversity habitat of a number of wild life species.

A Wildlife Conservation Team of Nakai-Nam Theun 2 Protected Area said last week that there were around 250 elephants in the Nakai-Nam Theun 2 National Protected Area.

In addition to elephants, the area also has rare animal species found such as the large-antlered muntjac and Annamite striped rabbits.

Mr Bounyor Nuanlahong, from the Wildlife Conservation Team, said that the government should cooperate with foreign organisations as soon as possible to preserve the forest around the dam, which has abundant bio-diversity.

The forest in this area can be threatened by deforestation if no detailed plan for long-term preservation is made, said Mr Bounyor.

“Before 1975, there were about 300 elephants and also some tigers in Nakai forest but now the number of these animals has declined continually due to hunting.. In addition, some elephants escape from Laos to Vietnam,” said Mr On-ta Ketkaisone who has lived in Bouama village near the Nam Theun 2 project’s dam for over 50 years.

“We are very worried about these elephants because they have no scientific identifications showing that they belong to Laos so they can easily cross the border to live in new area in Vietnam,” said Mr Bounyor. “We are setting a plan to prevent the migration of elephants to the other side of the border.”

let's hope they can do a lot to preserve what can be preserved, and move a danger into a great oportunity for Loas, both for enviroment preservation and for ecomony (tourism)

Lao country have definilty a very high potential for humanity, lets' take care it togather
