(KPL) Thakhek will be developed to be one of the most interesting tourist destinations of the central province of Khammouane by 2009.
The ambition was expressed by the director of the Tourist Office of Khammouane province, Mr Thayaphone Singthong, on 3 August said that .
Many cultural and historical tourist sites have been listed in the plans of development and conservation. These include the construction of Sikhottabong Cultural Park, which will be conducted by the district tourist office in co-operation with authorities concerned, and the renovation of the revered Sikhottabong Stupa, expected to be completed this year.
In addition to the projects, the Fountain Park, Nong Boua (lotus pond), and downtown roads also lie in a plan of development and construction, along with the Pafa Cave, the Stone Wall, the Nang Aen Cave, Phou (mountain) Sout at Km 4, and 15 old colonial-styled houses dating back to the French colonial rule.

“We are mobilising fund from various sectors to support the implementation of the projects,” said Mr Thayaphone.
“Among various works, at present, Thakhek, the capital of this central province, is also focusing on ideological education of ethnic people, socio-economic improvement development and its people’s culture.”
Also lying in the plan of provincial tourist development is the one-km long embankment work on the Mekong River in an effort to attract more tourists.
