A Korean investor aims to develop Souphanouvong University in Luang Prabang province into one of the best universities in Laos and the Southeast Asian region.

A Korean contractor, POSDATA consortium, has set up an Economic Development Cooperation Fund loan through the Korean government, with which it will manage the university for the next 30 years in collaboration with the Lao government.

As a part of these plans, 21 teachers and 29 administration staff from the university departed on Friday for training in the Republic of Korea.
The teachers will undertake training at Woosong University and Kangwon National University for five months and administration staff will attend Jeonju University for a one month course.

Teachers will learn how to develop a curriculum and textbooks, establish research projects and develop their teaching skills to suit students’ needs. They will also be educated in the teaching of tourism, business administration, IT business management, international business management, electronic engineering, computer engineering, agronomy, animal husbandry, forest resources and architecture.

Administration staff will be trained to manage the university’s operations, and to provide staff and vocational training.

Project Coordinator of POSDATA consortium, Mr Park Gibong, added that a further six teachers would soon be sent to Korea for similar training.

“In my opinion, certain sections of the university will be better than other universities in Laos in every possible way in the next ten years,” he said.
Five Korean universities will work alongside Souphanouvong University, including Woosong, Kangwon, Jeonju, Korea polytechnic and DIA.

The Director of Synergy Vision Inc (a member of the POSDATA consortium), Mr Kim Keenam, is in charge of Expert Works and Fellowship Training at the Luang Prabang National University Establishment Project. He said the training course would be invaluable for the improvement of the university when the staff returned and put what they had learned into practice.

Executive Consultant of the Korean Research Institute for Vocational Education and Training, Dr Chang Jisoon, explained that the Lao Ministry of Education believed they could learn from the Korean education system, which the ministry considers to be a key factor in the successful economic development of Korea. Having seen Korea’s success over the past 40 years, the Lao government now want s their help in upgrading human resources.

Souphanouvong University was established in 2003 in order to provide higher education to students in the eight northern provinces. Currently, over 2,000 students are enrolled at the university, with 116 teachers working in the four main faculties of science, education, economics and agriculture.

Last year the Lao government provided US$28.4 million, largely consisting of a US$22.7 million loan from the Republic of Korea, for new buildings and equipment and training for the university’s teachers and staff, to develop the curriculum and hire experts to assist in this process.

The university will also open seven new faculties and will be able to enrol more students at the start of the next academic year. Consequently, it is hoped that a further 1,800 students will soon be able to study there.

The university held a farewell party for their staff in Luang Prabang on Thursday, which was attended by the Director of the Higher Technical and Vocational Education Department, Professor Dr Kongsy Sengmany, and the President of the University, Dr Khamphay Sisavanh.

Does anyone know how far or how many kilometers from the University to the center of town?  Looking at the photos, the campus must be in between hills.

If it provides only the Northern of Laos that can't say National because National is only whole country not other countries that is conversely International which provides for students every where in the world can join
I think later will have International Class which provides for foreign students to study in Laos so, I would like to suggest who will study here should know more about Lao culture, tradition and society because, foreign students aim to study here so as to know more Lao culture, traditional and society not only graduate and next to improved our strong English in order to disseminate beautifully lao culture, tradition and society to people around the world.

Of course, Luang Prabang is a nation, a Lao nation. What's wrong with that? Luang Prabang is not an international country. Check your understanding first, before commenting it.

It's a domestic University, all Lao students have rights to get an education from this University.

Got it?

Yes, Of course, Luang Prabang is one of the fastest development city in Laos. Why should all Lao students/people rely on only the capital? There should be one or two more big Universities in Laos, not just only one or two. Damed! it's a freaking hassle to travel all over the country to study and the roads and infrastructures are so poor. Furthermore, Lao students will not be suffered a lot of being too far from homes.

It is perfect to construct a big University in Luang Prabang, coz Luang Prabang is easily accessible to the 6 provinces in the North. I am very proud of the progress and development in that area. Keep doing a good work Luang Prabang residents and be proud of it...Show off your culture, tradition, and religion, more to the outsiders and to the world, but don't show off what you have under your pants or skirts..That would be aweful lol..

LPB keeps going, i'll be coming for you soon..

Yes, the sign reading "NOT ALLOWED PERSON CAN'T GO SITE" is a little unfortunate but I doubt if the University has much say in who it's building contractors get to write the warning signs for them, apart from which the intention is I think clear enough, i.e. "unauthorized persons are not allowed on site"

I'm not sure you're missing some nerve on your brain. Good or bad university is not coming from the style of the building. Good or bad university is coming from the school teaching systems. Do they have enough school supplies and teaching's equipment? Are they have all fields teaching by foreigner professors? Are they using the international level of university's teaching systems?

Wake up brother, don't blame or look down on the building style of school or university.

I totally agreed w/you on that brother.  The United States has a whole lot better School systems, Eguipments, Professors etc...  that doesn't mean the students are going to be smarter than any other country in the world.  As matter of fact, the US is falling behind other nation in the category of education.  S.korea is way ahead of them.

Go Lao Go....Learn from S.korea is much better than from the North.

Anyway, I'll be in Lao this Nov.  and will visit this University 4 sure.

Don't you think North Korea have money to help Laos or any country, they couldn't even help them self either. How many the North Korean starving to death per year?  We saw North Korea helped Laos only commie politic. North Korea sent their pilots to train in Laos to cut down budget that used paid big money for China, and Moscow cut funding to help the North since the fallen of USSR in the 80's. Also Laos is the one helping North Korea by donation foods to North Korean via the International Foods Fund secretly.
