Savannakhet court sends counterfeit banknote gang to jail

(KPL) The People’s Court of Savannakhet province has recently sentenced a Thai gang of counterfeit banknote for years of imprisonment in Savannakhet province.

This gang made up of two persons were arrested by the policemen of Savansay market, Kaysone Phomvihane district, Savannakhet province, who was charged with circulation of fake Thai baht banknote in the central province.
 
According to police investigation, the two are Thai nationals named Mr Ngorsit Lisikham, 48, a farmer, Thai citizen in Ban Nosomphou, Vangsammor district, Udonthany province and his friend Mr Khemsi-oun, 61, a farmer, Thai citizen in Ban Khammuang, Sithat district, Udonthany province of Thailand. They were arrested on 14 March 2007.

The two offenders tried to bring Thai
baht counterfeit banknote, worth over 100,000 baht to buy goods in Savannakhet province, according to police investigation.

They were arrested at a small restaurant in Savannakhet province when they tried to spend a 100 baht counterfeit banknote on their meal.

After the detention, the policemen found 1,000 counterfeit banknotes worth 100,000 Thai baht, and 100 counterfeit banknotes worth 40,000 baht with two of them.

In this case, the Savannakhet People’s Court has also conducted an investigation of accusing in bringing foreign currency counterfeit banknote to spend in Laos.

The offenders have denied that they did not know the money was counterfeit banknotes.

According to the consideration of the court, the offenders’ practice violated and broke the criminal law of the Lao PDR, so the court has sentenced them to six-year imprisonment and penalties of 12 million kip to Mr Mr Ngorsit Lisikham, and five-year imprisonment and fine 10 million kip to his friend, Mr Khemsi-ounng.
