Punishment fits the crime, should have been practiced more often everywhere. Get a job, if you are still broke, it's your problem. What a way to go, nice and see ya
Nonthaburi _ A bank robber was shot dead by police yesterday after a taxi driver intentionally drove his cab into the path of the getaway vehicle to prevent the robber from escaping. The armed robber, who was wearing a Santa Claus hat and was later identified as Somchai Liwong, a migrant worker from Laos, was killed after he refused to surrender, police said.
Police were called to the Bank of Ayudhya's Bang Yai branch on Rattanathibet road after bank staff triggered an alarm.
Police found Somchai pulling a suitcase on wheels in one hand and waving a gun in the other. He was apparently trying to find a way to escape after robbing the bank of 672,000 baht.
Seeing the man waving a gun, Boonthita Kantai, 22, who was waiting in a pick-up truck for her father outside the bank, jumped out of the vehicle. She said Somchai then got into the car, which still had its engine running, and sped off towards the Phra Nang Klao bridge.
Taxi driver Apichart Suwanwong, 50, said he saw the whole incident and followed the robber from the bank.
After following him for about 8km, Mr Apichart, a neighbourhood watch volunteer, said he then cut in front of the speeding truck to stop Somchai escaping. The truck crashed into the back of the taxi and came to a stop, after which Somchai ran from the vehicle.
Traffic police said they tried to talk the bank robber into surrendering, but Somchai resisted and reportedly raised his gun and pointed it at the police. The officers then shot him once in the head and twice in the neck, police said.
According to his health insurance card, Somchai worked at a house on Sukhumvit 55. His age was not stated but police said he appeared to be in his late 20's.
Bank employee Kanokpan Rodpaen said the bank had just opened and had 10 staff on duty when Somchai walked behind the counter and told her to empty the contents of a safe into his case.
Nonthaburi police chief Pol Maj Parinya Chansuriya said it appeared that Somchai spent the night before the robbery with his girlfriend in a condominium in the Bang Yai area.
He took a taxi to the bank and told the driver to wait, but the taxi driver sped away after he saw Somchai exiting the bank with a gun in his hand.
An eyewitness said a bank security guard fired a warning shot into the ground, but Somchai aimed the gun at the guard's head and threatened him before walking away
