That Luang marsh is not so close to That Luang sacred stupa
Concerning this development project, we all know chinese are generaly able to do the best... or the worst. I hope they will choose "the best" for this project.
If they really do something that look like shuzhu, the result can be wonderfull... but we have very few informations about this project for the moment.
i guess laos doesn't have any environmental law. what i like to know is... what are they going to do with all the water runoff? "beung" is like a big detention pond.. now, they want to put up commercial buildings.. this will be a disaster for all the neighbor villages.. they will see more flooding around those villages.
i hope those lao government study these issues carefully. hopefully, not jumping into it.. just because those chinese will build it for free.. i hope they see the bigger picture and for the country sake..
i like to see the lao people preserve "beung thatluang"..
Laos government they're only do money talk, whoever give them more money and they let others country do whatever thay wants. This is a fact. That's why we are all immgrant to America. It's so sad and there is nothing to show our kids next generation.
I know there are others would help Laos however Laos didnt care, this is very important to all Laotian peoples and it's does effect the world.
Have anyone like to watch discovery channel check out Planet world. It's amazing show about planet.
I grew up not too far from Beung Thatluang. When I was a kid, we used to fish from there all the times. During my last visit to Laos in April 2006, I notices alot of houses being built around there. I guess it started with ITECC shopping center. Soon, there will be no more land for people harvest the rice.
I wonder how much and who those chinese bribes in order to built their factory/commerical buildings. I'm sure some lao official is getting pay.

How about upgrading Lao airplanes, building new airport, and road to China southern province? Yeah, I think that is enough bribe.

It would be interesting to learn more about this Beung Thatluang and New Development Plan. Does anyone know about the project and the history about Beung Thatluang?

Nothing to show? Its a god damn marsh what is there to show? Its a marsh named after a scared place, nothing more.
Exactly what do some of you people see in a marsh that is valuable? I think its because the Chinese are going to develop it and thats what makes you so scared. Things changed, things are built, destroyed, and rebuilt.
Face it, you people can't see the land going to 3,000 Chinese workers that will actually do something to it. You people can't take the fact that the land was there and was not being developed and its gone and you want to bitch and moan about how precious and sacred it supposedly is.
Honestly, if anyone cared about the marsh, if it was precious, if it was sacred, people would have built something there already, or fence it off, or up keep it more. Don't give me BS about money or bribes, caring for the land and your country doesn't have to do with neither of those.
Repect all comments but l think the lao govt. is doing for the betterment of the vientiane city by developing those areas which have been left underveloped for centuries. Dont you all think so??? Or you want to see Laos undeveloped and far behind its neighboring countries, and people live in poverty without social progress and development taken place in the country.
I guess many just dont want to see the chinese to develop the country esp those Lao americans. you would be pleased if the americans do the job and would not oppose this project, I assum. But you guys dont dream about the US willingness to help Laos develop.
with the concern of environment and flooding, I believe, the govt and the investor are taking them into account.
yes!! i agree that the current government is doing something to better Laos. If you really sit back and think.. with all those funds from many different countries, our country still so far behind. the roads takes forever to complete and never done properly. it is because of corruption!! take a look around the city... who's driving the nice cars and big ass house (vila).. there are mostly high ranking official and the last time i check.. a monthly paycheck for those official wouldn't even fill up the gas on their Toyota Landcruiser.. i think i'm going off subject here, but they are somewhat related to the topic.
Lao should think about investing on some major infrastructure.... like sewer treatment plants, storm water treatment plants... some basic modern world sanitation structures.. so, we dont have all these ditches all over the city. i think most of you guys knows what i'm talking about too.. those ditches contained mostly raw sewage and it smell so bad.. that's what Laos really need at the moment.. and than later on.. we can talk about freeways..
Why goverment let chinese doing this why not lao goverment do it look like lao pples stupid can not do anything everything just wait another pples do this do that but i blive lao pples have so much money like kaisone wife general (NAI PHON) chang and their party friend these money pples can built country with out asking another pples do it .this is true
3000 chinese workers and how many year are they going to stay in our country?3000X2 a year=6000...10, 20 year ? we will have chinese all over vientian...??????????

The reason Lao's government needs chinese workers because Lao did not have enough skill labour. Remember Don Chanh hotel when it was built, there were chinese workers doing the building job as well. Do those chinese workers stayed back in Lao or they went back to China?????
And that's my question are they going to stayed to manage the place or hand over to lao goverment??? if they stay for 10-20 year there will be lot of little chinese running around for sure.5241
How about chinese people living in Australia, USA, England etc, do you think the american, the australian, the english really care about that. China town in Bangkok, china town in Sydney, in America....how about those governments think of the chinese, good for USA, Australia...or not. Did you do any research about chinese in USA, Australia, England, Thailand...to see what did they contribute to those countries, and then look at Lao again.
The concession to China is 100 years, and according to a previous news, it was proposed as replacement of payment of a big lao debt. If Chinese do good job, the deal can be very fair for both china and Laos : winner/winner. For sure many chinese will come there to live. But the question is not how many people will come and stay. The right question is how those people will behave and integrate lao society? Is something planned to help them to find their place in laos society and avoid causing trouble to locals people by their behaviour?
It would be really very interested to know more details about this project. Can someone confirm chinese want to build something "suzhou style"? It would be very beautifull and attract many tourists (and their money), and would definitly not be a bad place for local lao people.
yes that's in 3rd world country i dont think u can compare with lao population wise small bussines like mom and pop will not survive most chinese wont marry caucasian but will marry asian like lao girl there are shortage of female in china too???? if u in lao before 1975 u know most bussiness owned by chinese????
all the market control by chinese from grain of sallt to rice...etc u talked about thailand they corrupted thai goverment run the country untill got boots out last year? u know who im talking about!
It would be nice if Lao government invite different countries to build each country style of garden such as Lao, Japanese, Chinese, French, etc...in Beung Thatluang compound so that people have more option to visit

why would the tourists want to see other countries type of garden?? they can see that somewhere else!! i think they should keep it lao lao theme kindda park.. that's why most of tourists come to Laos to see lao stuffs. you think those japanese tourists will flock to Laos to see Japanese garden?? i dont think so!!!
the major problem with Lao government is...... they always do things half asss job!!! stop pocking the $$$..
Also I think building a Chinese style town in LAOS is very stupid. My question is WHY?
Why not build a LAOS style town. Build a traditional Lao house on a stilt. Creat a little town where the tourist can see how Lao use to live 100-200 years ago. It is those style of house that will disappear in 20-30 years since lumber is becoming so expensive. Lao now favor large brick house.

I said that EXACT same thing in the other thread. Me and you are in the same boat, WHY? and also the issue of what to build.
I saw many Chinese gardens in Australia, Japan, Korea, etc... we have to ask those countries why they have Chinese garden in their country and why can not Laos have one.

Yes, nobody complained about French style houses built in Laos, indeed. But, I don't understand when it comes to Chinese style, certain people in here are crazy about it. What is wrong in your mind? If you think French style house attracts tourists from oversea, why not Chinese style?
China Towns are in every corner, be it USA, France, Australia and may many countries. Should you think Lao government is stupid to let that happen, why don't you blame USA, France, Australia goverments too for the fact that there are China towns in their countries. Probably having China Town would be nothing wrong, but only would help Lao economy, no doubt. Yes, I agree with Mr. Webmaster, why other countries can have, but Laos cannot.
In this regard, I think, the question who is stupid is not Lao government, but those people who have the opinion of anti Lao government. Why don't you tell your USA, France bosses that they are stupid or mad for having China Town there if you are so clever, although I think about you otherwise?

Regards,
damnnnnn!!!! jape hua vaa.... trying to read your opinion is too much works for me...
let me just briefly say this.... the reason laos had all those french style building.. let me refresh your memory, in case you didn't learn anything in history class... laos was once colonized by french..
so... what are you trying to tell me??? is laos being taken over by china and the chinese people??
just to let you know... i'm not anti lao government at all... i'm just purely stating my opinions about what lao government is doing.. is that wrong?? ooppss!! i forgot, you guys still communist!! you not suppose to say anything..
Many people there give their opinion about this project... but WE KNOW NEAR NOTHING ABOUT IT! So what is the value of any opinion in those circumstances?
PLEASE LAO GOVERNMENT, GIVE US MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THIS PROJECT! maybe this could help to reassure us... and get more people support this critical project

c'mon now... Paris-Vientaine. let's be honest now..
when was the last time that the lao government asks the people for their opinion. usually they just go ahead and built it.. clear cutting them trees... putting up a dam that most lao people doesnt even get much out of it. the dam project has been declared for environmental disastrous.. that just few of example that i can think of it now..
it would be nice if they have some of website... where people can go in and voice their opinion.

This person seems to be a low educated, although he claimed he is so clever. I think, he needs to change his mindset about Lao government and Lao people as a whole, thinking that the Western people are very good, but Lao people all are bad and stupid. While he knows nothing about Laos, he criticized Lao government without any constructive suggestions. I am surprised why he doesn't think other people also have their reasons, have their opinions. And that not one person thinks about this development, but whole nation. This strategy was passed and agreed by Lao MPs who were elected by Lao people.
I don't think that Lao government would have to go ask every Lao person; even in the West they are also not stupid to do like that. When USA went to war with Iraq, the decision was passed only in the Congress or partliament. I don't know whether USA government asked Mr. SeeHarHed or not. He is so clever.
Yes, one thing I understand quite well. Those people, who are stupid, likely show off that they are extremely clever. Unfortunately, clever people would not do like that. They would look for the reality like Mr. Vientiane_Paris does. Yes, nothing is perfect on earth, but be sure no one government or no Lao person, in Laos of course, does not love Laos. Lao government always wants to do it best for Lao people.
As a result, the situation or Lao economy has improved year by year. Yes, you may not believe me on the grounds that I am a communist, although I am not, I am just ordinary person, but a patriot, no doubt. Please come to visit Laos and observe by your eyes. You would say it is really different from situation before 1975 when your bosses governed.
In fact, I also would like to suggest to Mr.SeeHarHed to change his mindset so that he can get out from the small cave where the slogan like Lao government is communist and very bad is existed. That would only make him part far away from Laos, from Lao people as well. He would continue looking down Lao people forever; after all, he looks down himself, ironically.
I bought land behind Beer Lao company which also include in the Beung Thatluang compound last 10 years ago, and more than half of my land will be gone!
I wonder how much the government will compensate the land ? and in what form? money or land exchange land ? how much will the government pay?

A hole!!!!! A for Anonymous or ******* if you prefer..
you listen... and listen very careful A hole.. i never once called lao people stupid nor i claimed myself to be clever like you paint me to be.. Before you go around calling me low educated person. Perhaps look at yourself first ok buddy!! Look at you buddy.. who's trying to be clever.. typing with all the big words but still i can tell by your style of writting... you're trying so hard to be fancy with all your words but your sentence structure is jacked up!!
since this is a blog forum...... keep in mind that everyone has that right to voice their opinion. freedom of speech buddy!!! ooopss, that something that you guys dont have there.. i forgot again.. hahhahahah
even though i dont live in laos, doesnt meant i dont love for laos as much as you do.. you need to get that straight!!
i came in here with peace... to voice my opinion.. to discuss... if you can't take that, you shouldn't be in here reading..

Can my cousin in Laos choose his uncle, who is a farmer btw, to represent him in the government? Last I heard the Communist party choose the people who they want you to elect. You can only select only those people they approved.

Oh come on guys, stop building huge walls between yourselves and start recognising things that are actually quite similar about Laos and America. The US may have a multi-party political system in which people can choose to participate if they want to, but when it comes down to it the same people always get into power. The Bush family have MORE IN COMMON with the wealthy political elite in Laos than they do with your average suburban American, especially those who are refugees from Laos. In terms of wealth, social status and international connections, the people who run America are the cousins of the people who now run Laos. Even the American legal system now recognises Laos as a sovereign country and is prosecuting Lao-Americans who plan to attack it (Vang Pao). If you want to look for democracy, America is not a good example. If you want to look for a corruption-free government, America is not a good example (Enron, Worldcomm). In fact, the reason why the world economy looks like it is heading into a recession is because of the corruption of the American banking sector that gave out billions of dollars in loans that it new would never be repaid. America is not a good example of anything, unless you are blinded by its nationalist ideology. Look at Norway, Denmark and Sweden, they are actually the most democratic in the world, have the best living standards in the world and are the least corrupt in the world (according to UN figures) and guess what - Sweden has been under Socialist rule for decades. So come on, stop waving your pro-American dicks around like you know what democracy is and start trying to understand what is going on in Laos from the perspective of people who chose not to run away from their country. You will find that people dont think you look down on them, they actually look down on you.
I am sorry to interupt, but I really don't want Samakomlao webboard to be the fighting zone between Lao nai and Lao nork related to the topic of Lao government. If you want to talk about this issue, go to other website such as laohub, lao freedom, etc..
If some of you don't obey this rule, I am sorry, but to ban from accessing the webboard.
Best regards,
Webmaster

That is a statement from a Lao person living in Laos. Everytime you speak you accuse us of hating Lao people. You keep accusing us of saying they are uneducated but in fact we never say that.
It is you that are the one creating the wall. We criticize the government not the people.
It appears to me.....from what you are saying.....Lao people in Laos are the one doing the hating or as you say creating a wall.
America is not good for anything? ...........tell that to thousands of people coming here for education, works, and immigrating here. If America is so feaking bad why the hell they are running over each other just to get here. They are stupid? or they know there is some good here.
I can not speak to anyone who does not see the good and bad in everything. To you America is BAD the world is GOOD.

i`ve been fishing in this marsh many years ago, fish in this marsh were good, but now the marsh is so polluted that you cannot get into it anymore... it smell like chit `cos every dirty thing was flowing down into this marsh, as everyone knows, polluted water might create many kind of virus and diseases by itself, so, why conserving it ? when there is someone ready to built new thing on it while lao people cannot do it by itself why not grasp this opportunity ?
Beung Thatluang has probably been there for hundreds of thousands of years not 450 years. It's very cheap and easy to destroy it but would cost hundreds of millions of to recreate. Imagine one day when Viengchan becomes a mega city (maybe not in the very near future) wouldn't our childrens or their childrens wish that we had kept it? Imagine Central Park in the heart of Viengchan.
