Moreover, in fact, even lao people cannot really own the land... The land belong always to lao nation, and people can only own a "right of use of the land", that they can transmit to their children or sale.... In the real life, there is not really difference with "property"...it's more a question of philosophy.
if they are seriously want to improve economy of Laos i think that one of solutions that inject instant cash into economy is that they should relax laws allowing those who can trace their ancientors back to Laos eg parents, father, mother or themselve were born in Laos, they should allow to own property back in Laos. This should at least bring some cash in to economy in the house market. There are many Lao will benefit from this namely builder, plumber, import of building materials, bricklayer, brickmaker, every who employ inderectly and indirectly with this industry. there are many cash rich people living outside of wishing to investing property in Laos for either investment rent, for holiday house, future retirement, etc.. T
this would just make the price of land rise and rise, and local lao people would not be able to own a land any more... This law is a problem for me, but i think it's a good law...
At least this will make outside-Lao thinking about it. That is a good start. Some will eventually follow through. Local will profit from it no doubt if the price rises. Remember local own land. They will invest their money somewhere. This will also bring in-lao & out-lao closer together. Some will return to Laos to live out their final years. they will bring their hard earned money with them when they sell off everything to settle back in Laos. That is lots of money. Everyone will be proud that they somehow help building nation. I like to see everyone contribute in building in some way and along the way earn a decent living along the way. Price will never go over the top since Laos has a control economy.
well... kob jai lai lai der por mae peee nong tung lai for the comments.. maybe someday, the lao government will change their minds about this particular issue. but.. for now, it is what it is.....
when i was visiting laos back in 07.. i came close of purchase this piece of land not far from the city. but i had to put it on my cousin name... i heard many stories regarding relatives scam one of their own... i try to avoid that at all cost
