Well, there is no the best model country for Laos to follow given the fact that each nation has diferrent background and value, historically, culturally, socially, politically and economically. But Laos can take and learn good things that are suitable to the actual country conditions from other countries.

However, if I were to choose one country it would be Switzerland.

Because: Switzerland is a landlocked country of 7.5 million people
Switzerland is one of the richest countries in the world.
Switzerland has a long history of neutrality

Being a neutral country is good in many aspects for a small country like Laos so that we dont need to take sides thus can enjoy freindly relations with all countries.

Laos was neutral but was invaded by Vietcong.

Thailand - military/police state

China - Communist

Vietnam - Communist

Singapore - Police State

Japan - Treat their woment like dirt

America - Work too much

France - This is the one. Less work, more vacation time. But the turn off is the French language which is declining in usage.

If you read history book again, you will find, when the past Prince Souphanouvong was democratically elected of course by the people, he was arrested and his party was dismissed. Prince Souphanouvong was actually in jail, until he was rescued and from that day he chose the Revolution road to lead Lao to country like you see now. Phoui Sananikone was the person who ordered to arrest Prince Souphanouvong. The history tells us like that, not just LAO WAS A NEUTRAL COUNTRY AND INVADED BY VIETCONG. NOT JUST THAT SHORT AND THAT NO HEAD NO TAIL LIKE THAT.

Laos was neutral. Its that the Pathet Lao couldn't handle these coalition governments by themselves, seeing as how they are farmers and peasants, they depended on the Vietcong for backup in warfare. Vice versa with the Royal Lao and Americans.

Its because of Khon Lao's inability to handle things for themselves that they had to turn on each other. This isn't new. Remember Chao Anouvong's rebellion? What was Luang Phrabang doing? Playing their role against Vientiane.

I liked that first reply a lot. Every country is different and Laos must find it's own way.

But switzerland is an interesting choice. Remember they remain nuetral through strength and not being subservient to another country. They are also democratic. They too have lots of mountains. They protect nature. Good country.

I want Laos to follow Bhutan !

why?

The true prosperity of the country is "Happiness"

Have you ever heard about GIH

GIH or "The Gross International Happiness" is based on the insight that conventional development concepts such as GNP and Per Capita Income do not properly reflect the general well being of the inhabitants of a nation.

In order to develop real progress and sustainability and to effectively combat trends which compromise the planet’s natural and human ecosystems, GIH aims to develop more appropriate and inclusive indicators which truly measure the quality of life within nations and organizations.

GIH is inspired by the concept of Gross National Happiness (GNH) proposed by the King of Bhutan, which puts the well being of individuals on top of the national development agenda.

Rooted in Buddhist philosophy and values, GIH presents a radically different development paradigm, but one that holds a promise for achieving real sustainability. GIH aims to connect the international efforts which are taking place in the field of developing alternative development indicators, human economics and happiness psychology, so that individual efforts can benefit from each other and that collectively these efforts more strongly impact international development agenda’s.

I agree with your brilliant idea. If Laos ever want to develop the country, they should follow swiss country. It is a landlocked country in Europe, but they are prosper in many ways. Laos should establish the neutral nation in which they can gain economically between East-West Corridor trades. Making Laos to become the most World Financial Institutions in S.E. Asia.

To copy or learn from the industrial country/advance technology is the way to go, but to bring the experiences from one country won't fit Laos. We have to learn from the best and adapt the knowhow to fit with our culture and tradition.  The location and lao ppl are not ready for running. We have to learn dicipline or the working culture. Another word to start from the basical working culture........ then growing up.  Even if someone can bring Microsoft Head Quarter from Redmond to VTE, it will not helf Laos any good.

No country is best model that Laos can to follow directly. Laos should have created own model to develop itseft.

But having said that it would be no harm if Laos would learn from experiences of other countries which Lao people think would suit more to its model. Difference situation and background need to be considered into account, no doubt.

Talking about neutrality, I don't think it will work for Laos. Before 1975 Laos was neutral country, but it was extremly poorer than current Laos. Now, Laos welcomes all investment from outside no matter from where the investors come. Actually, the cold war ended long time ago. Why do somebody still bother to think about neutrality. What is a the point? Now is 21 century the century of cooperation.

On top of that, if Laos is neutral, Laos would not have been able to be a member of ASEAN, which means Laos isolates itseft from regional cooperation. That is only bad for Laos. Laos needs cooperation with our neighbour in particular and with global in general.

I personally, nevertheless, think that our Lao own model has been created ready. So, I do wonder why somebody still have such question. As we know Laos plan to get out from the list of poor countries by 2020. Laos doesn't need at all the neutrality. Laos needs cooperation.

Regards,

I mostly agree with your points. I just want to point out the issue of being member of ASEAN. If I am not mistaken and correct me if I am wrong, ASEAN has its own document called "Zone of Peace, Freedom and Neutrality Declaration". This means that Laos can still be a member of ASEAN if the country follow the path of neutrality.
