More English course for Laotians, but by Indian teachers !

More students, teachers, officials, and business people will be able to improve their English after the opening of a new training centre on Tuesday, supported by the government of India .

The opening ceremony of the Lao-India Centre for English Language Training took place at the National University of Laos (NUOL) and was attended by Deputy Minister of Education Lytou Bouapao and education officials.

NUOL Vice President for Academic, Research and Postgraduate Affairs, Associate Professor Dr Phetsamone Khounsavath, said the aim of the centre was to help as many people as possible to improve their English so they could use the language in the course of their work.

“The centre aims to be a centre of excellence in English teaching and training, not only in Laos , but also in Cambodia , Myanmar and Vietnam , under the auspices of India-Asean cooperation,” Dr Phetsamone said.

He said the project would run for two years, supported by the Republic of India and the Lao government. It would be attached to the university's Faculty of Letters, which would maintain the centre, consisting of two classrooms, an office, a library and a language laboratory.

Dr Phetsamone said the centre would offer a variety of courses including proficiency, teacher training, and preparatory courses for examinations required for higher education abroad, including the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).

He said that another purpose of the centre was to provide a permanent venue for teaching English language and conducting courses, to raise the English language proficiency of civil servants, students and the business community in Laos .

One major goal was to facilitate the use of English in official business transactions and to train and update English language teachers from schools, colleges and universities, he said. The centre plans to run approximately 30 English training courses within two years.

The Indian Ambassador to Laos, Mr Suresh K. Goel, speaking at the inauguration ceremony, said the opening of the centre realised one of the goals established through the framework of cooperation between Laos and India.

He said the earliest interactions between the two countries since the first millennium were anchored in culture and trade, as evidenced by the presence of archaeological artefacts in Champassak province.

“It is recognised that language, culture and trade are the most stabilising factors in the growth of relationships and friendship between nations and people,” he said.

The government of India funded the construction of the centre, under the Indian-Asean cooperation framework, as part of the Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation signed in June 2007 between Laos and India.

You guys ever heard the way Indian speak? It is laughable.
If you ever have to call for techincal service most likely you will talk to someone in India.
I can not understand them at all. I read they are hiring American English speaking teacher so they sound more American. Apprently the school is filling up fast. It is not as if they don't know English, it is just that the way they speak is hilarious and they know it too.

Now they are teaching English to Lao people. That is even more helirious.
Why don't Laos hire some Australian or American to teach English?

Oh, they don't want to pay for the teacher? Ahhh, I got it. They want it for free.

Yes people in India speak with an accent, but then have you ever heard a guy from Scotland speak? Or Manchester England, or the deep rural south in the USA, or a German, or a ,,, I could go on forever. I'm American, but I don't believe American English is the only way to speak. The English Language belongs to all who speak it, including Laotians.

The people of India and the Phillipines learn English from a very early age and speak it very well. V S Naipaul who won the Nobel prize in literature for his works in English is of Indian descent. The Indians value education and science very highly. I say great for Laos.

In fact, there are many places where Lao people can choose to learn English and business courses in English. They are Lao-American College (LAC), Vientiane College based on Autralian teachers, Lao-Singapore Colleges and so on.

I do agree with somebody who said "Don't be so cynical and negative about everything that Lao people are doing".

It's true that the real Indian accent I don't understand well either, but I meet lots of Indians who are in oversea. They speak not much different with English men, though.
