I saw on TV news that many athletes are not going because of the polluted air in Beijing.
I doubt if it will affect the game itself. I think just some well name athletes that are not going.

Its most likely because in Asian culture we believe in power of the group, never the individual.

Its selfish to think that way, to go out of the norm to express yourself like what a democracy would protect and encourage.

I said ".......and now China "  ,  I just wanted to say " and now  International communities hear and speak about China according of what 's going on in Tibet nowadays "  !!

Of course , China was and is in total contradiction with Human Rights and Democracy ! This fact fears me a lot when this country appears to be the 1st World.

Democracy is just utopia, no real indeed.

Now the imperalists, including USA, UK, France and EU just use the term of democracy to serve their goals, means to occupy other small nations. By doing so they can take all resources from these poor countries.

Actually, their goals are not different from what they did in 19-20 centuries making poor countries beeing their colonies. But now, their methods are much more clever because they have western media in their control.

Why did USA want to occupy Iraq? There are lots of oil. They use every pretex to attack Iraq. At the end of the day, they said there was a lie what Bush had said. Please refer to below acticle:
A study by the United States' Pentagon has confirmed there was no direct link between the former Iraqi leader, Saddam Hussein, and the al-Qaeda terrorist network.

The study was based on 600,000 official Iraqi documents and thousands of hours of interrogation of Saddam Hussein's former colleagues.

The claim was a key argument by the Bush administration to justify the war in Iraq.

The report is not available via the department's website and is only being offered on individual request and by mail.

A Pentagon spokesman says he does not know why the report is not being posted online, but denies it is an attempt to limit its distribution.

As of now, Iraq innocent people have died from war more 1 million mostly women and children. Bush and Blair said they want to help Iraq people.

However, I wonder, is that help Iraq people to early die? And what is the usefulness of democracy for these death people?

Regards,

Yep, and either look in Russia.

Election is democratic, peole going to vote but everybody know that Poutine is allways a Master of Russia, even if he is Pr. Minster.

French President and others tell him congratulation ... it's good example of democraty ? diplomatic ? Cause Russian is a big country, they give oil and others to Europe. Democraty is just a BIG word so.

Do you really believe that? Because thats the dumbest idea ever. Oil isn't the issue, invading Iraq wasn't even a good idea. I know Bush had some other reason to invade, but oil is NOT the issue. Why?

LOOK AT THE GAS PRICES IN THE U.S. If oil was the reason, why does the gas prices keep rising? Its suppose to be over $4USD a gallon by the summer in the U.S. How does invading a country, supposedly for oil, INCREASE gas prices?

There is probably some ****ed up reason why Bush did invade Iraq, but Oil is NOT the reason you're looking for.

Oh ! Because right now USA cannot control Iraq yet and probably would never, I believe. There is a fight for their independent. Iraq people don't USA occupants in their land. The oil plants cannot work well.

Some oil plants were attacked by Iraq patriots. Other reason of oil price rised is because of Iran sanction. And you may know that USA cannot get along well with Venezuela, which is a country that supplies oil to USA. Don't you know that?

I think you mix 2 different issue. Most of the county in the world are in "peace" with others.... but only "military and diplomatic peace". The reality is that every country in the world is in economic war with all others: if a country is economicaly too weak, it can disapear and people will suffer a lot.

If a country want to protect it's future and people, this country have to be economacaly stronger than others... and this mean make other poorer! This is what we call globalization ("mondialisation" in french) : a great opportunity for some countries, a tragedy for others.
This is a real and terrific issue, but this have nothing to do with democraty.

Anyway, i agree with you: Democraty is an utopia.
Personaly, i think "western style democraty" (as we have in France, USA...) is the best governance system we know... BUT i'll never angry a country whotry to find another way, because for sure, this style of democraty is far far from being perfect. I would say it's a very bad system.... the best we know, but for sure not enough efficient!

Why? for many reasons
To be elected by people, you need to convice them: you have to speak well, promise well, debate well, understand what people expect you tell us...
But to manage a country, you need many other qualities, very different.

Someone can promise many things and win the election (make people dream, promise impossible).... but once elected, he can choose to do anything else.... or just be unable to do what he/she promised.

Moreover, how a simple citizen, for many with low education, can know what are the best choises to manage a country? even most of our most educated and experienced politics are unable to know and make many many mistakes.... so what about the simple citizen?

Moreover, in a democratic country, many people choose according to their personal interest, and don't care about the nation interest....

How do you imagine presidents like Bush or Sarkozy could be elected? Do you really beleive theose person are the best to manage so important countries and their serious problems? They were elected just because they were able to seduce people, not thanks to their gorvernance skills! We can now see the result!

I don't say lao "democratic" system is better.... i just say that i won't agry them if they don't copy what my country do... and i don't accept when those countries try to force others to choose the same democratic systems.
Even in our coutries, this system is not perfect... moreover, many countries are not ready for such system

Let's try to have human rights respected, sanitary and judiciary security in every country, This is just a huge work... but this one is really important

It sucks for you. But the dollar here has lost so much of its value. Its now 100yen = 1USD.

When I was in Japan 6mts ago, it was a good 120yen=1USD when I got there, 114yen=1USD when I left.

Respect for you paris_vientiane ;)

You are a smart guy ;) and you know a lot about politic.

As you say the others country are not ready or don't want to be a democratic system like occident...

The french president Nicolas Sakorsy said one day if he will be the new french president he will not allow Turkey to enter in Europe because Turkey is in Asia not in Europe...  Not the same continent...

I will say Democracy was born in occident, many other country are not in occident...

Maybe they don't need democracy... But just leave in peace ;)

Talking about democracy, I wonder whether there is any connection between SEX and DEMOCRACY.

Some of us have said that democracy is born for occident (western world). I am hardly convinced that the kind of democracy of western style is good. I feel that the more that kind of DEMOCRACY, the more SEX SCANDALS.

Please take a look on examples in this below article:

Sex scandals testify to true democracy?

Another sex scandal occurred in the USA last week, in which New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer was caught in having close relations with VIP prostitutes. Opinion polls unveiled the day after the beginning of the sex scandal that the majority of Americans were deeply concerned with the governor’s hypocrisy. Many of them said that the governor should resign. Spitzer released a statement to the media and sent in his resignation.

In some countries, it is generally believed that the retribution for sex affairs is a token of true democracy and testifies to the real responsibility of the authorities to the people. An act of public repentance plays a special role at this point, for it shows that the general public is entitled to expect a special moral level from a statesman, whereas other people who do not take official positions are free to break those moral standards. A theory says that this is a payment which state officials have to make for their participation in the decision-making process and those advantages that the power gives them.

On the other hand, laws do not regulate moral values per se – they were made to struggle against the abusive exercise of power. The notorious scandal with Monica Lewinsky is a classic example of this paradox. Prosecutor Kenneth Starr repeatedly emphasized that the fact of Bill Clinton’s adultery was not the subject of investigation. The case was connected with criminal actions connected with Bill Clinton’s attempts to put obstacles in the way of investigation. As it is known, Mr. Clinton denied the allegation of his sexual contacts with Monica Lewinsky and attempted to make third persons commit a perjury too. The formal approach allowed Clinton to keep his power during the process of impeachment and the Senate-led investigation.

Nevertheless, intimate details of Bill Clinton’s private life made front pages of nearly all newspapers in the world during a whole year. Clinton entered history as the president who desecrated the Oval Office and outraged family values that are so cherished by Americans.

As a rule, a sex scandal starts with the appearance of pieces of information about sexual pleasures of an influential person. The rest depends on the conduct of the “pervert.” Only several days of the scandal were enough to make Eliot Spitzer resign. British Home Secretary David Blunkett resigned a couple of weeks after he was accused of power misuse to solve his lover’s family affairs. Israeli President Moshe Katsav was struggling for a year and so did Bill Clinton. As a result, Katsav resigned, but Clinton managed to keep his office.

I think you don't imagine the amount of taxes we have in France! especialy on gas (about 70 or 80% of the gas'price is taxes)

When a company spend 100 euros to pay someone in France, the person receive only 50 (other 50 are for taxes, public social insurance, unemployment insurance....)... but this is not the only taxes the company have to pay: there are taxes over benefits, various constraints like 1% for help building homes, local taxes for the city, etc...
When the employe receive 50 , he have to pay tax over revenue :between 0 to 50%... lets say 20% for most people... 50-20%=40
When you buy something, you have to pay VAT: 20 % for most products, 5% for food. for homesales, taxes are about 7%... let's say about 10% in general
40-10%= aprox 35 euros

conclusion: when a company spend 100 euros for an employee's job, in fact, 65 euros go for taxes, and only 35% for real consumption!

and this calculation don't count many extra taxes we have like taxes over gas (and many other)... the exact figure is certainly worse!

To finish with, this is not enough because France have about 1000 billions euros public debts and loose about 50 billions euros every year (government and public services spend 20% more money than what they can get with taxes every year)!

Crazy country!
But are other countries really better? not sure.... let's see what happen in USA with their tremendous private debts, important public debt too, financial crisis, and the $ 's value that lower and lower...

haha ! bonjour! I must agree with you PV ! you wouldn`t be very glad when you have to pay such a high rate of tax hehe ! we in laos we have to pay tax too but according to the amount you received about 6-10 %, we call it : income tax + retirement saving 6 %. but tax for the squandering imported goods as perfumes, sedan cars, alcoholic bewerages are 60-140 percent +vat it would reach arround 200 %.so reflection faite, yours is much higher than ours, PV.

boycott will not solve anything.

For sure, China progress about human rights, but dramaticaly too slowly!

But boycott of Olympics Games will not solve anything, not force them to progress...
On the contrary, it can "block" them and stop progress.

Chinese are able to do the best or the worse... They got a tremendous economical power, and so an important political power too.

So, as a New "world leader", they have to show the best exemple. best exemple about economical success, but also about good governance, human rights respect, environment respect and sustainable development....
But they are far far from being leaders over all those subjects.... the problem is that their economic power dominate everything, and the ones who try to defend others values or ideas are very weak.

Economy dominate the world :this make some people, (especialy many french), very upset and sad. China dominate economy so they can dominate the world.

Do they want to be an evil dominator or a world leader who make the all world progress, and more friendly?

If they don't progress, for sure they will be the first one.... And if you reject any contact and exchange with them (as boycott of olympics games), you cannot expect them to progress and for sure too you'll get the first one.

If you expect them to be the second one, i don't know what we can do to help it, but for sure we will have to find something else than boycott, multiply exchange and dialog with them.

Anyway, Chinese have to understand that they cannot be an acceptable partner for many country if they don't change dramaticaly some aspects of their society and politic, that is clearly unacceptable for many foreigners (and maybe some chinese).

Many people feel fear or humliated or hate toward chinese... that's not for nothing, there are some concrete reason for that... as i wrote before, Chinese are able to do the best but also the worse!!!! If Chinese want everyone to appreciate and respect them, and to accept them are the new world leader they are becoming, They strongly have to stop with "the worse".... even if until now, they didn't consider this "worse" as important (environment, human right). Because for many people those values are much more important than economy (in their mind... but sadly not in their life, dominated by economical problems)

As far as I am aware from what I read Chinese media, China also moves to the democracy, but slow. Nevertheless, Chinese government commits itself to democracy when time comes. They let democracy develop inside China, but not want to import from the West. Probably, the western one is not suit them, at least for time being.

There are 9 parties inside China, but the ruling party is communist party, whereas from the other 8 parties probably can be elected only as the members of Chinese parliament.
