Laos Deputy Prime Minister Somsavath Lengsavad admits that the concession of a 1,000-hectare That Luang marshland to a Chinese company to develop into a residential and economic zone was in exchange for the new stadium and sports facilities that Chinese companies are building for Laos to use when it hosts the 25th SEA Games in December 2009. The concession has become controversial when rumors surfaced that the government has agreed to allow thousands of Chinese to settle down in the area, creating a Chinatown in Vientiane. Mr. Somsavad told a recent press conference that it is a case of turning assets into capitals, and the marshland development will be a comprehensive, joint development Blueprint of That Luang marshland development by Chinese and Lao companies between Chinese and Lao companies, with the latter holding a 5% stake. The concession is for 50 years, after which the developed area will be turned over to Laos. The concession does not include a 600-hectare lot that will be developed into a water park. Lao authorities say the That Luang marshland development is necessary to accommodate the population growth and the economic expansion of the capital city, and that affected people will be appropriately compensated.

The Lao Government does not give out land to the Chinese people. It is a Joint Venture Entreprise between the Lao Government and a Chinese Investor. The Chinese Investor will develope the marshland into a modern urban center for both commercial and residential uses.

Laos have 5% share of the operation and getting part of the land back in 50-75 years...I don't call that a joint venture. I call it....."hey, commrade A, B, C, and D,....here is some $$$$. Now sit back and shut up".

Look, I know Laos need money for the new stadium for ASEAN olympic so it is going to do what it take to build it. But does Laos really need the stadium or why does it think it can host the olympic there? And another thing, Laos can't even host the other half of the events in the olympic. That is the more reason to ask why was Laos thinking.

What exactly do you people want? When the Lao Government do something positive for the country. You people still whine and whine.

The contruction of sport facilities benefit many sector of the Lao economy. To build a structure, you need labor, funding, materials and so forth. Who do you think provided the labor for the contruction? Lao people! Where do you think the building material came from? Variety of places. Most from Laos. Lao cement, Lao timber, Lao steel and etc. Material that are imported must be transport to Laos on Lao trucks. Trucks run on diesel purchases in Lao gas station. The work forces on this contruction project must eat, drink and what not. Where do you think the go and eat? Laos!

What should I say to the guy use the CAP letter name as FOREVER as a hell ?

If I say to him " SHAME ON YOU ", it would not be an apprropriate language and impolite to him because of his spelling. I've never implied that selling the country is a positive thing. Seizing the opportunity that present to us is a good policy. Sitting idle and waiting for the next Buddha to arrive is a wishful thinking. I am happy that the Lao Government is pro active about development and modernization of the country.

We do have embassies and diplomats post all over the world. If you have a good proposal for projects of any kind in Laos, please do not hesistate to contact the nearest Lao embassy or consulate in your area. When opportunity knock, it is simply not wise to let the opportunity passed by. The next opportunity for Laos to host the SEA Game will be two decades away if we failed to act. Laos cannot simply let this opportunity slip away. We have investors that are will to take the risk and invest in our country. The benefit simply are to great to ignore. We have asset that has not yet been tap. The stadium and the That Luang Marshland Urban Development project will end up in Lao's possession at the end of the lease term. The Chinese Investor is certainly not going to take the structures back with them upon the expiration of the lease.

PS. FYI, the SEA Game is not the Olympic.

I have read many opinions and many discussions here, I don't want to write too long and say too much about both sides of your arguments here, all I want to say for short and meaning is that for better or worst " I LOVE MY MOTHER-LAND ". For those who criticize and call Lao PDR as a communist country; take a look at Communist Soviet Union is no longer exist. Lao PDR have no word of communist in it.
For someone who educated in the West, he/she says is my Freedom of speech think again some phone-line(s) being tapped by government now and even building the Wall now. Tell other tear down the (Berlin) wall..Huh. Tell other respect Human Right..Huh. Sometime they are confusing of calling the CHINA : The CAPITAL Communist China or The Socialist Communist China..Umm. Trillion dollors had gone without any profit return, economy in a blink of Recession and corruptions rose !!! They are fear no one but they are fear in themself.

You don't have to be surprise of 300,000 chinese pleople. They invaded our country long time ago. In 1960, about 450,000 Hmongs live in Laos. Hmongs came from China. They are chinese people.

After World War II, king of Loas refused to accept compensation from Japanse. Now, why don't laos goverment use $260 million dollars that still availabe to buy stadium or to build university. Beside, Laos Americans can sui U.S for Vang Pao's case(civil or felony) that never brought to justice(unconstitution). Hmong's leader never appreciated Laos Americans for not taking any action to against their leader who wanted to kill innocent civillians in Vientaine for his own gain. Vang Pao's people called Laos stupid because we're not supporting them to destroy Viet. Vientiane. In the history, vietnamese were chinese(Hmong) enemy. Even now, they still dislike eachother. When hmong's leader against loas goverment, he meant Vietnamese people. Viet and Chinese(hmong) try to take over Laos. In vientiane city, who owns the business and who owns small house on the counryside.

just let them have it. It's Ok for laotian pleople to be their slave as janitor and kalee. What can you do your prime minister is Chinese. He has laos name it doesn't mean he's Laotian. He's Chinese. Real Laos don't do that to thier own blood.

     พากันกดขี้เก็บพาสีแต่นำปะชาชน ถ้าบ่อมีปัญญาหาอย่างอื่นตายสาแล้วให้คนอื่นเป็นแทน
