Royals vanished into air? Oppression of our history.

Everytime the Monarchy is brought up, lots of people criticize it. I can understand that (in real life I cannot, but its another person's point of view and I respect that) But mind you, the King and Queen were symbolic, what power did they have over multiple failed coalition governments and a civil war?

Forget the criticism for a bit. I do not know the validity of this post (please someone give me a sourve to where this came from, I found it off another forum) but questions still remained unanswered about what exactly happened to them.

"The King & Prince's last days in the Pathet Lao Communist Re-Education camps
The King had been held in a hut of internment and constrained at 70 years -, to cultivate rice fields, eight hours per day and six days per week. Both the Queen & King had been tortured. Communist Pathet Lao had a strict separation of sexes in their camps so the king & queen never seen each other after the picture. The King and his son lived horribly, barely living on a diet of rice and rat meat portions. The King's health had worsened to the point where he could no longer work. In a desperate attempt to save his father's health the Prince would give his father his rations in hopes of him surviving. This sacrifice would prove fatal for the prince as he was the first one from the royal family to die of starvation. (in my mind, that is the saddest part)

After seeing his son dying, King Sri Vathanna decided to renounce his own life. On May 13th, As he laid dying the king's last words were to his three servants were:

"I WILL SLEEP, I GIVE ALL MY HEART, MY BLOOD AND MY BODY ON the FERTILE GROUND AND A the BEAUTY OF LAOS, AND FOR the WELLBEING OF ALL the LAOTIAN PEOPLE" after this he took his last breath and died. After his death, the three servants quickly dug up an unmarked grave as they did with the Prince and threw his body in. They had to do so with haste because if the Pathet Lao soldiers had seen them they would kill them as well.

Queen Khamphoui's last days in the Pathet Lao Communist Re-Education camps
Although she was unable to see them one last time, the Queen knew that her son & husband had been killed through news of the surviving servants. The Communist did not force her to work because according to the Communist she had been under the influence of drugs and cigarettes that were, according to her survivng servants, used to ease the stress and pain that she had from all the tragic events that had happened. She was found dead on December 12th, 1981."

Sometime during the 20th anniversary of the 1975 revolution, the BBC interviewed a high positioned member of the Lao PRP. The BBC asked that person what had happened to the King and Queen. The person questioned was visibly irriated. That irritation is a sign of guilt in someways. (I am stating this from a book written by Grant Evans, if you want names, details, dates, I can post them later but the book is elsewhere right now).

Its now 2008, 33 years after the revolution. Most will say to move on. We know our Lao history, from Jao Fa Ngum with 32 teeth to Nang Keo and her escapade of many Kings under her iron fist. But why let the ending of our Kingdom be unanswered? Do some not want closure? I do.

I certainly do. Those in power who cannot validate their reign must oppress and manipulate the past to their favor. I won't allow such things to happen. Why, after hundreds of years of the Lao people and Lao culture's existance, that survived tyranny from the Siamese, the Burmese, the Vietnamese, must the current Lao regime oppress such things?

Free online information regarding "seminar Camps" And The Death Of King Savang Vatthana, Laos

"Seminar camps," also called reeducation centers, were the centerpiece of the new regime's policy toward the enemies it had defeated. The LPRP's Marxist-Leninist dogma allowed no respite in the class struggle, and those identified as its former enemies were the presumed saboteurs and subversives of the socialist phase of

the revolution that was just getting under way. After its victory, the regime made people judged unfit to participate in the new society in their present frame of mind construct a series of camps, known only by their numbers. They included Camp 01 at Sop Hao; Camp 03 near Na Kai, newly given the Pali name Viangxai, meaning "Victorious Town"; Camp 05 near Muang Xamteu; and Camps 04 and 06 near Muang Et, all in Houaphan. A camp was also built at Muang Khoua on the Nam Ou, and others were built in the center and south. There are no official figures on the numbers of people sent for reeducation, because the camp network was kept a secret from the outside world. The only information was brought out by former inmates and their families. Various published estimates have put the number of inmates at 30,000, at 37,600, and at 50,000.
Even before the communist takeover, the first groups of highlevel officials, including provincial governors and district chiefs, had been transported to the camps, arriving in full dress uniform. They had received letters signed by Souvanna Phouma ordering them to attend an important meeting in Vientiane. After an overnight stay in Vientiane, the group was flown to the Plain of

Jars, where a festive atmosphere prevailed. The officials, about seventy in all, were feted with food and a movie, and North Vietnamese advisers were present. They were then flown to Houaphan, separated into small groups, and organized into work parties.
In August and September 1977, a group of twenty-six "reactionary" high-ranking officials and military officers in Camp 05 were accused of plotting a coup and arrested. These persons were taken away to Camp 01. They included Pheng Phongsavan, the minister who had signed the Vientiane Agreement; Touby Lyfoung, the Hmong leader; Soukhan Vilaysan, another of Souvanna Phouma's ministers who had been with him in the Lao Issara and had risen to become secretary general of the Neutralists; and Generals Bounphone Maekthepharak and Ouan Ratikoun. All died in Camp 01. Thus, those who played roles in the modern history of Laos were relegated by the regime to the status of nonpersons and their fate placed in the hands of their prison guards. Others, like Tiao Sisoumang Sisaleumsak, a minister in Souvanna Phouma's 1960 government, General Sengsouvanh Souvannarath, commander of the Neutralist forces, Khamchan Pradith, an intellectual and diplomat, and even

Sing Chanthakoummane, a lieutenant in the Second Paratroop Battalion in 1960, were held in seminar camps for fifteen years or more before being released. Souvanna Phouma was allowed to live quietly in Vientiane until his death in January 1984.
The new regime feared that ex-King Savang Vatthana, who until March 1977 had lived quietly in the royal palace as a private citizen with the meaningless title of adviser to President Souphanouvong, would become a symbol of popular resistance. As a result, he was suddenly spirited away by helicopter to Houaphan along with Queen Khamboui and Crown Prince Say Vongsavang. Imprisoned in Camp 01, the crown prince died on May 2, 1978, and the king eleven days later of starvation. The queen died on December 12, 1981. According to an eyewitness, all were buried in unmarked graves outside the camp's perimeter. No official announcement was made. More than a decade later, during a visit to France in December 1989, Kaysone confirmed reports of the king's death in an innocuous aside that attributed it to old age. The party did not dare abolish the Buddhist community of monks and novices, the clergy (sangha), of which the king had been the supreme patron. It did, however, attempt to reshape the sangha into an instrument of control. In March

1979, the Venerable Thammayano, the eighty-seven-year-old Sangha-raja of Laos, the country's highest-ranking abbott, fled by floating across the Mekong on a raft of inflated car tubes. His secretary, who engineered the escape, reported that the Sangha-raja had been confined to his monastery in Louangphrabang and was forbidden to preach. Ordinary monks were not forbidden to preach, but their sermons were commonly tape recorded and monitored for signs of dissidence. As a result of these pressures, the number of monks in Laos decreased sharply after 1975 (see Buddhism , ch. 2).

Anyone born after 1970 or even after 1975 would not remember the King of Laos. I don't know the statistic but I do see many young people in Laos. They don't care because they can't relate to the late King just as some Lao-American that were born here can't relate to Laos.

Exact detail of how they die is really irrelevant now. But the fact is they die from Laos Communist goverment. So they are guilty of that. The King and Queen was not guilty of anything because Laos has a democratic government since the 50s.

Anyhow, since they were symbolic they need to be elliminated. Communist didn't want any challenge to their power. Having a King and Queen alive might unite people to take back Laos from them.

The King and Queen and the entire royal family could have easily left Laos but they chose not to go. Tell me if that is not courage or leadership.

Long Live Royal Laos!!

I DON'T KNOW MANY OF US WAS  OLD ENOUGH TO HEAR THIS STORY. WHICH HAVE
CIRCULATED, PARTICULARLY IN LUANG PRABANG , VIENTIANE ,CHAMPASSAK,HAVE IDLY
SPECULATED ABOUT THE POSSIBILITY OF "NOT DYNASTIC" BETWEEN A KING SISAVANG VONG
AND SISAVANG VATTHANA . SUCH AS ONE WHICH CLAIMS KING SISAVANG VONG FORBADE HIS
SON FROM ATTENDING HIS FUNERAL ; AND A RELATED STORY WHICH CLAIMS THAT DURING
THE DRESSING OF KING SISAVANG VONG FOR HIS FUNERAL,A ROLE RESERVED FOR THE SON
,SISAVANG VATTHANA COULD NOT LIFT HIS FATHER IN ORDER TO CARRY OUT THE TASK,
THUS SHOWING HE WAS NOT A TRUE CHILD OF THE KING . ONLY SIHANOUK KING OF
CAMBODIA.( THE LATTER IN FACT FLEW TO LUANG PRABBANG FOR FUNERAL ) COULD LIFT
HIM ,WHICH SHOWS THAT HE WAS IN FACT A TRUE CHILD OF THE KING AND IN VIENTIANE
STORYTELLR CONTINUED BY SAYING THAT SISAVANG VATTHANA HAD NEVER  PLACED A ROOF
OVER THE STATUE OF HIS FARTHER OUTSIDE VAT SIMUANG ,AND THIS ALSO SHOWED THAT
HE NOT A TRUE CHILD OF THE OLD KING. .A  FINAL FURTHER "FACT "  FROM
STORYTELLER   THAT SISAVANG VATTHANA ' FATHER WAS IN FACT AN ENGLISHMAN , WHICH
YOU COULD TELL FROM THE SIZE OF HIS NOSE.MANY MORE STORIE ARE TOLL SUCH AS THAT
HE COULD NOT SPEAK LAOS PROPERLY ,FOR EXAMPLE ,AND COULD ONLY SPEAK FRENCH

I also heard the same thing what was said in the story in terms of King Sihanou. But I heard that the Sisvang Wathana was son of Kmer King. They were changed by French ruler in France when they were small boys. Presumely, they went to France from kindergarten. Both Laos and Khmer were French colonies.

I thought I am the only one person who still remember this story. This I heard long time ago before 1975. At that time it was really secret and people could not talk about this story freely.

No wonder, former King Siswang Wathna did not do anything for Laos, just took care his rice field and garden in Luang Prabang. I remember that every year Lao youth "Scout" had to come to Luang Prabang to work in King rice field.

True or not?. That was what I heard.

Oops! Sisavang Wathana seemed to be a fake King. The colony ruler could do everything, even King cannot keep his own son, to say nothing of ordinary people. However, I do understand his feeling, judging on the mentioned story.

No wonder, having known this rumour, Lao people did not care much about King or last regime.

These people, who posted this topic, defended even the fake king who did nothing for Laos and Lao people. Be more reasonable if you still have your own brain. There is nothing hypocritical about the story, that is a reality.

Of course, we respect our good and real, but not fake king who even King Sisavang Vong could not accept.

Because France was ruled by monarch at the time.

LAOS had a democratic government that is why they allowed Communist party in the government.

Does Communist government of totay allow samething? I think not.

You it is easy for you people to blame the King and his family or bloodline because YOU PEOPLE LACK KNOWLEDGE. You know of it but you don't study or analyze the history of Laos (Lan Xang).

If you did you would know the history was riddled with confusion and disagreement. Many group couldn't compromise and there were many disagreement on how to rule Laos. That is how things never get done. That is a democracy and that was a downfall.

Communist took over with one goal and one ideology. Kill off those that does not agree with them. That how things work in that society. Without any disagreement and bickering among many group Communist idea spread thing get done quicker. It does not mean it is the right way or proper way but it is a quicker way.

In USA, France there is no King, but they are properous. Probably these Lao people should move out from these countries.

No king means democracy. King means monarchy where king always lives with no law for him to follow.

It seems to me only stupid people don't want one law for all people. We all Lao people are equally to our law. We don't need any king who did nothing for Laos.

Our real king is Chao Anou who died long time ago.

You really need to be open minded. We are not sponsoring or suggesting anything.

We are just trying to understand what had happened.

Why do you not want to hear about it? perhap you already knew of the history but some of us dont. That is the reason we are discussing this.

That is all.

Such stories and accusations are response to the deposed King's reign. What I mean is that if he were truly the King, he would not have been treated like that, or disposed in that manner. Rumors such as King Sri Savang Vatthana being an illegitimate child were spread because the Lao people, mostly and quite honestly not so educated, would believe such thing. Its to "de-legitimize" the Kings reign, to give an explaination to why the Monarchy failed.

As a people without a King anymore, we look back and resent the Monarch because things were not ended a good note.

Be real people. Lan Xang here has the right thought. Like I said before, I refuse to move on. I will say it again,

Why should the Lao people and Lao culture, after HUNDREDS of years of existance, be dwindled down by their OWN government (the "Revolutionaries") if we have physically and mentally survived so many attacks on our realm. Why should the GOVERNMENT undermine its people by falsifying past events and refusing to administer the correct democratic rights to the people when we've survived wars from outside forces such as in 1828. Hundreds of years of foreign rule has led to the government, filled with Khon Lao, to rule over the Lao people. That is the reality now.

This, this thread is not an arguement whether or not we need a King, or whether or not the Monarch should come back. Its an arguement against the fact that the people of Laos should not be underminded with false history. If the current regime was any good, why should they cloud the past? Kids that were born after 1975, like me, have no thought of the Monarch, but why should that memory be hidden from us by the government? The past Monarch is a good example of what I am talking about, that is why I used it.

Don't be fooled by these one-sided ignorant comments. Just remember that the ones who are making these false accusations are too single minded. Their hypocrites-disrespecting the royal family. Please look on yourself before you would excuse other people groundlessly. You repeated other people words like you have no brain, if not monkey.

By the way I have never known the person whose name is Keosone Phomveehan. So I may be wrong about whom you are talking.

Probably, you want to excuse our great leader Kaisone Phomvihanh. I can say you are totally wrong. He is someone who most Lao people really respect and appreciate his good work. Without him Laos would have been Laos today.

He is not the kind as you have discribed. If you don't know about him you should shut up. As you left Laos when you just were 3 years old, so you did not know anything about Laos, except from bias news.

If you are clever enough, please imagine if he was bad like you have said why Lao patriot people living Laos supported him and continue respecting him as a great leader, to say nothing about the stupid or fake king. No one Lao person cares of.

No, you are not wrong, he is keison Phomvihanh. He is someone who most lao people hate and don't respect his evil work. Because of him Laos is still one of the poorest country in the world. Many lao people had died of his evil hands.
Yes, he is the kind of guy I had described. He was like a terrorist back when he was doing a fight. However, the Lao people who worship this guy mostly are member of  the communist regime, he is their hero. But for other he is not thing but a killer. Why he is a killer? Because there were many lao people had died when he took over Laos. Many lao people had fled the country to Thailand.
However, many people had made it to the third country and many did not make it. In addition, there are many familes don't even see each other forever. So if you know not thing, I'm suggestting you just shut the hell up, hahahahahahaha.

FOREVER

Oh! You seem to be a stupid man who would not able to understand even the simple thing.

Then please go to the hell with your stupid king, you are in right track.

You are right the king has done nothing, just sat in his palace, untill the day he had to go to reeducation camp. The reason they took the king family to the camp was to make him see the destroyed land done by the bombs.

Yes, the king is the hero of stupid people, no doubt.

Be reasonable. Imagine! Laos got independent from French is thanks to our great leaders Kaisone and Chao Souphanouvong, but not the stupid King. So make conlusion by yourself who is hero.

Given the king's ability, Laos would have been colony of French forever like New Caledonia.

That's why I said the king had done nothing for Laos and Lao people.
The stupid king did not suit to be king of Lao people.

We Lao people respect person by his work done.

=====================================================

I'm Laos and I'm Buddhis. The monarchy can go to hell. HAHAHAHAHAH!

Too bad you can't even spell it. If you were a real Buddhist, you'd know the King is the defender of Buddhism. You have your own views, but the least you could have done was made it professional.

I think this topic has gone down the drain. My point has been lost in the rambles of dealing with the past Monarchy.

Lan Xang has a good point. Why was the country bombed in the firt place? Because anyone that respected the Democratic coalition government wouldn't have allowed the Communist Vietnamese to run a trail through the heartland of Laos. Face it, the Communists did more harm than good. The King may have sat there, but he never once did kill his own people. He was symbolic, he had no real power. I don't see how the blame towards him works.

I think now the Lao people are bitter about the Monarchy. Why or How could the country ever succumb to a dominate Communist party ran by peasants that knew nothing about the government? Thus, the blame is on the Monarchy, because surely we cannot blame the Lao people themselves.

The de-legitimizing of the Monarchy and our past, started by the Communists, has worked. And this topic has proved that. That isn't a good thing, no one will realize my words.

All responses have been rambling and cryings of the past Monarchy or current government. I need to make my point clearer next time.

Probably, the waste of the king would be also a hero.

Because of the STUPID KING Lao people are  all over the world.  His selfishness, and his greed for his own families wealth has caused the destruction of Loas.

I hate the communist, but i hate the monarchy more.  Laos should be run by the corrupt elected official like the rest of the world.  Then we would feel like we are part of this world.

I totally agree with you. Even though these peasants turn revolutionaries did a horrible job running the country. It seems the only thing they did right was spreading their socialist propraganda. Ignorace is like a wild fire, if left uncheck it will burn down the whole forest.

Hey smart guy, the Lao people escape from Laos WHEN COMMUNIST TOOK OVER. If the King was so bad why didn't they leave the country before?

Why wiat until Communist took over. I tell you why..........because Communists will kill you or put you in death camp like the King.

Can you use logic and common sense.

I don't agree with you about this point. If communists put everybody in death camp as you said then there will be nobody left today, but today Lao has around 6 millions habitants

That's why someone has said that the stupid king was to lazy, he had done nothing for Laos and Lao people. If he was a good and great king, Lao people would have supported him.

Who needs stupid king who just would sit there in the palace and doesn't care of people life.

What for the symbolic?

Other nation kings are clever, concern about their people. Say for example Thai king, he always play important role in politic, country development and everything. No wonder Thai people really love and respect him.

But our stupid king always sat in the palace, never visited people, never knew what people needed, what happened in the country as you said. Probabaly, he could not speak in Lao well. That was why he did not want to see Lao people.

He was really proud to speak in French language. Given his desire, Laos was a colony of French forever, it would have be better.

Oy! I wonder why Lao oversea people still miss the stupid king?
in Laos nobody even remember about him, not to mention being bitter about the manarchy, believe me.

This argument is like a nightmare that will continue to haunt and divide Laos. Everyone just blames each other, everyone sounds like they are still ready to kill the other person for their equally ignorant views about who is right and who is wrong. Where are the people who look toward a united future here?
