Vientiane residents will soon be able to enjoy strolling through a public park that is to be laid out alongside the MekongRiver in Chanthabouly district. Officials from the Vientiane Public Works and Transport Department are planning to build the park near PakpasackTechnicalSchool and link it with SalongxayPark in front of the Lane Xang Hotel, said Project Coordinator Mong Bouapin on Monday. Mr Mong said surveying for the project is underway and construction will begin in June. Authorities hope the area will be a place for people to gather and admire the river views, as well as making Vientiane a greener city.
The park will have night-time lighting, a handicraft shop and a statue of King Anouvong, and will be named AnouvongPark. Vientiane has 10 parks and gardens: Patouxay, Donnouon, That Dam, Fa Ngum, Salongxay, Simeuang, August 23, Nam Phou, Nong Chanh and Setthathirat. Another is planned for Nongtha village in Chanthabouly district. A resident of Sithan village, Ms Joy Keomany, walks alongside the MekongRiver every day on her way to work. She says it is a good idea to improve this area because it's a popular spot with locals in the evenings; a park would also provide pleasant surroundings where children could play. Ms Joy, like many people in Vientiane, is looking forward to the development of this part of the riverbank. By Meuangkham Noradeth (Latest Update March 26, 2008)
