Oldies and Goodies

I have a profound appreciation for anything old. Mostly music though, movies I find boring. Pictures speak a thousand words and I do enjoy those.

I have been listening to Old Cambodian music from the 50s-60s before the Khmer Rouge came in. I cannot speak or understand Khmer but the beat and tempo is great. I have lots of it on my ipod.

I enjoy the Thai movie "Tears of the Black Tiger" because it features old style ballads from the 20s, 30s, and 40s sung with Thai lyrics. I especially like music from Eua Sunthornsanan. But I cannot get my hands on any CDs or any of that sort.

But there is no oldies for Lao music. I have not yet to find any. I mean I have lots of Morlam, classical court music (I wish I had more), and other things. But I sort of meant the contemporary things that came out in the 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, before my time.

I remember a year ago when I was sitting in the Patuxai Park they would play old Lao music throughout the speakers. I wish I caught the names, maybe even bought a VCD or even a tape or CD.

I ask of you to post old songs, names of the songs and singer/writer. Preferbly in Lao writing so maybe the next time I go to Laos, I could score some of that stuff. I would be very thankful if anyone did.

You are asking people to dig up all their old cassette tape, convert to mp3, upload it. That is a lot of work. If whoever even know how to do it.

I bet the name of the singers, songs and lyric probably lost in time as well.

I too would love to hear it as well.

Nah just asking for names and songs. Thats all. I figured all of what you said would be way too hard.

I could name a few: "Champa Muanglao" - Outama Chounlamany, "Sai Lom Yen"- Bounthamali Bounxouei, and some of the earlier ones from 1930s to 1940s by Dr Thongdy Sounthonevichit (1905-1968), Lao Houam Samphan", "Yam Leng Thi Vientiane" and he was also famous for composing the antional anthem of Laos in 1941. These early composers started out with Lao traditional instruments with some Western influence.

Not until after Worldwar II, Lao music started to change with the mass wave of Western music, began to created something that our parents listen today.
