Laos traces its history to the kingdom of Lan Xang, founded in the fourteenth century by Fa Ngum, himself descended from a long line of Lao kings, tracking back to Khun Borom. Lan-Xang

I'd agree. Cambodia outright wins with the oldest civilization and culture. To me, its ancient, they can trace it back to a good thousand years within the same place.

Zak, you are probably correct. I didn't mention Chenla or Cham to this topic since it was not on the list.

Its really vague to ask what country had the oldest history.

I say ask the question as what civilization is the oldest in SE Asia.

I would say Cambodia is the oldest continuous civilization. Although the Dong Son civilization in Vietnam began earlier, yet it's not considered as advanced compare to Funan.

But the oldest nonexistent civilzation is the Ban Chiang, dated back as far as 3,000 BCE.

The Dvaravati (Thai: ทวารวดี) period lasted from the 6th to the 13th centuries. Dvaravati refers to both a culture and a disparate conglomerate of principalities.

By the 10th century, Dvaravati began to come under the influence of the Khmer Empire and central Thailand was ultimately invaded by the Khmer king Suryavarman II in the first half of the 12th century[1]. Haripunchai survived its southern progenitors until the late 13th century A.D. when it was incorporated in the Lanna Kingdom[2]. The people of the region used the ancient Mon language, but whether they were ethnically Mon is unknown. There is evidence that these principalities may comprise many cultural groups of people, including Malays and Khmers. The theory of Thai migration into Dvaravati has been refuted and is now known to have happened much later.

The term Dvaravati derives from coins which were inscribed in Sanskrit with śrī dvāravatī. The Sanskrit word dvāravatī means "she with many gates " (from dvar "door gate"). Its name may derive from the mythical city of Dvāraka in ancient India.

Little is known about the administration of Dvaravati. It might simply have been a loose gathering of principalities rather than a centralised state, expanding from the coastal area of the upper peninsula to the riverine region of Chao Phraya river. Hinduism and Buddhism were significant. The main settlements appear to have been at Nakhon Pathom, U Thong and Khu Bua west of the Chao Phraya. Other towns like Lavo (modern-day Lopburi) or Si Thep were also clearly influenced by the Dvaravati culture, but probably were not part of the Dvaravati state.

Dvaravati itself was heavily influenced by Indian culture, and played an important role in introducing Buddhism and particularly Buddhist art to the region.

Laos, and Thailand known as '' Takoon Tai'' way before these (tais) people migrated to these Area Known as Suvannabhumi, There was only Kha=khom) lived here. No wonder Thai history is so different than surrounding neighbor countries.

i would like to think i know a lot bout sout east asian history i actually dont know much about malaysia, indonesia, philipines, brunei, burma, singapor...

my main focus of studyes would be on mainlaind south east asia, laos, thailand, cambodian, vietnam

so this is the context to where i will get my answer from

from what i know i would say hands down cambodia they had the khmai empire next to cham empire..

because to my knowledge Laos, thailand vietnam was not a country yett when the khmai state already established a dynasty.

so giving credit to my cambodian brothers.

Thai/Siam/Siem is the former tribute of Tai in China. After an invasion of the Mongol, the tai begged the Khmer King to live in Sokhor Tey (former name of Sokhorthai). Then, they betrayed Khmer and claimed the country as Siam. They took all the Khmer Treasures, territories, culture, words, religion, etc. and changed all the history to tell their new generation that they are not thief in the past. They don't even let their children know about Khmer in elementary and secondary school. They do that because many people are Khmer or mixed Khmer blood in their territory. If they tell the truth in history, the new Khmer generation in Siam will know that they are Khmer and make revolution. Anyway, now the Siam/Tai/Thai succeed in changing history and no Khmer in Siam know that they are Khmer.

Bangkok=Beoung Kok (Kok Lake, former Khmer territory)

Also, the Siam army in the border between Khmer and Siam now are also the former Khmer is Khmer Surin that they still know that they are Khmer.

Yeah, I think Thai history is so different from her neighbor countries: Cambodia, Burma, Lao, and Malaysia. And the four counties have the same history. So, it means Thai changed the history and lied their people. lolz..
