There will soon be another road alongside the Mekong riverbank, running from the Pakpasak T-junction to the bend in the road just before Thatkhao village. This is the site where a new riverside road will be built in Vientiane . The road is expected to help ease traffic jams on Fagnum Road .
Vientiane Public Works and Transport Department officials are planning to build the new road to reduce traffic congestion.
Project Coordinator Mong Bouapinh said a survey was now being conducted to determine the exact route of the road and the results of this would be submitted to the government.
He said the new asphalt road would be 13 metres wide and would have street lighting.
The plan to upgrade 12km of riverbank will be undertaken in two phases. Firstly, the stretch running from Km 3 on Thadeua Road , Sisattanak district to the Pakpasak T-junction will be built. The second phase will start at the T-junction and continue to Nonkeo village in Sikhottabong district.
In addition to constructing the road, the project plan will also include building a public park and reinforcing the riverbank in this area.
Deputy Chanthabouly District Governor Phomvysone Keomoungthong said when the project was finished Vientiane would have a more convenient road along the riverbank which would reduce traffic congestion in peak times and also benefit tourism.
He also said it would make the area a picturesque location for the boat racing festival held in October each year.
The Republic of Korea loaned the Lao government the total cost of the project, which is 323 billion kip (US$37.213 million).
This loan was signed in Vientiane between Lao Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Thongloun Sisoulith and the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Laos Mr Park Jae-hyun.
