What is wrong with China’s influence on Laos?

According to Western journalist, Bertil Lintner, it could be the case Laos may be a part of Yunnan province. Why?
The Chinese are coming. If the plan holds, the small and sleepy capital of Laos, Vientiane, might look like Manhattan on the Mekong. More than architectural statement, the construction of the new Chinatown in Laos will mark the newest evidence of China’s rising influence in Indochina.

China’s profile and influence in Laos have grown steadily over the past few years. Unlike aid from the West, Chinese assistance comes with no strings attached for promoting democracy or good governance.  At the same time, China has become a major investor in Laos with 236 projects worth around US$876 million, a considerable increase from US$3 million worth of investment in 1996. The total Chinese direct investment approved by Laos’ Committee for Planning and Investment up to August 2007 amounts to US$1.1 billion, second only to Thailand’s projects worth US$1.3 billion. About a third of the Chinese investment is in hydropower, and the Laos government has granted Chinese companies concessions to mine gold, copper, iron, potassium and bauxite. Vast tracts of land have been farmed out to Chinese interests for rubber plantations.

China
’s assistance to Laos since the late 1990s has reached nearly US$500 million in grants, interest-free loans and special loans. China has built a huge Culture Hall in Vientiane, ostensibly in traditional Lao style. In November 2004, China beautified the park around the Vientiane landmark Patouxay, the capital’s Arch of Triumph, and now constructs a stadium for the Southeast Asian Games, which Laos will host in 2009.

According to a June 2007 report in the English-language Vientiane Times, special loans from China helped establish the Lao Telecom Company and Lao Asia Telecom, and also funded a cement factory, the purchase of two MA 60 aircraft for Lao Airlines, as well as several government internet projects. The Chinese ambassador in Vientiane participates in donors’ meetings and plays an active role in the social life of Lao-based diplomats. Soon he’ll be joined by thousands, perhaps tens of thousands, of Chinese citizens in Vientiane’s new Chinatown, which, for reasons of sensitivity, is called a “New City Development Project.”

Once Vientiane’s new Chinatown is built, the people of Laos may have to adjust to their country’s becoming an extension of Yunnan.

Nothing wrong with China's influence on Laos. On the contrary,
Laotians will have more motivations to work harder to compete with chineses.
At the moments, Lao people has not yet fully active and some are very lazy.
Seeing chinese doing business in Laos may add up some idea for Laotian on how to live in this compititive world.

It is nature of Western journalists, when it comes to China or communist countries, they would try hard to suspect something bad would happen.

Had the Western countries done the same things what China has done in Laos, they would have shut their mouths, no doubt.

Instead, I would rather appreciate China for what it has done for Laos. It's clear to everyone that Laos is a poor country that's why Laos really needs aid from rich countries to develop itself so that it would be able to stand in its feet in near future.

I also wonder why he didn't write articles blaming the countries dropped lots of bombs in Laos and so far have never thought to come to remove the bombs which still keep killing Lao people in that area every minute.

I don't understand either why should Laos become a part of Yunan province, when Laos is an independent country? It seems really ridiculous.

We have legal border line between Laos and China. And, so far I have never heard that China annexed any countries to be its part.

Some of westerners just cant stand to see the development in Laos wit hthe assistance from China and Vietnam, I think. They want to keep Laos as poor as possible so that they can blame the government or they want to see how poor people live their life like in ancient time, the situation that they dont experience in their countries.

Lao People would happily welcome more help from developed countries like the US for the removal of unwanted left over UXO throughout Laos.

For your information, Laos just purchased the 4th MA60 airplane from China last month.

That is the point. You are right. They want Lao people stay poor is their main purpose. That would show that our regime is not good and Lao government is not capable to lead Lao people. As a result, Lao people will fell angry with Lao government and finally overthrow it.

However, that would not happen forever. Laos is getting better and better. Our friendly nations keep providing assistants to Laos. Meanwhile, the western countries also want to keep Laos in their influences. That's why they really try to discredit our good relationship between Laos and China in particular.

Talking about our regime, they also try to blame that our regime is not good; their model is only the best. So far, they have no good example to show. That's why people are skeptical over that statement. As we all know, currently USA economy is getting worse and worse, while economy of China, however, is getting better and better. Having looked on countries that follow Western model, we would understand clearer.

Afghanistan and Iraq are the countries that western countries force them to try American model no matter local people want or not. That's why war is going on and on, probably forever. Local people say they don't want foreign occupants. They love their countries. They want their countries to be independent.

So, from what we have seen the American model used, I hate to say, but have to. Wherever American model is used, civil war is going on.

Therefore, why should we use American model, while our current model is clearly better, at least no war? Lao people live with each other peacefully and are proud of the fact that Laos now is independent country, which would never be a part of any countries.

Yeah you can say that the economy of China is getting better and better but at the same time there environment is getting worst and worst. They have bad air quality which emits a large amount of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. That damn country has produce toxic clouds which covers a lot of the Asian continent. Sulfur dioxide which turns into acid rain for much of the southern portion of the country. At the rate they are going, they are just gonna kill themselves off. To me it seems like its all about the money and resources but they dont give a fuk about there own environment and citizens. Children and the elderly are at most risk and have develop pneumonie like symptoms due to air pollution which can be very dangerous to ones health. At the same time they are coming into poorer countries like Laos to extract all of our resources. What are we going to have left once they eliminate all of our resources?

Yeah I understand that our motherland needs to become developed instead of being a developing country and all but I don't think that we should give up everything just to get it. I feel that the government needs to do something about education and the pay the teachers more so that the children of our country can achieve higher learning and help change our country in the right way instead of throwing it away and rely on others. Yeah its nice of China and all of these other countries investing in our homeland but lets be smart about it and dont give everything up.

Wouldn't Chinese help show the Lao people the Government cannot doing anything on their own also? Either way, the government, if you want to think about it, will look bad. I don't think thats the intention of anybody. I mean allowing the Lao people to stay poor that is.

I believe Western style governments are just as bad as Eastern authoritative govenrments. There is no single good style.

I think this whole xenophobia is the result of Laos being so isolated for so many years. I mean after independence was established, there was a civil war. Once that was over, it was isolation, besides help from Vietnam.

Now that Laos is opening up, there are fears to what will actually happen. People want to go back to the old times and think of "Colonization", but its the 21st century, the era where the world is now flat and computers and the internet allow all types of free expression. The Lao people will be independent. Its normal to feel fear with something new.

Probably, he got money from he wrote this topic. It is clear to everyone that  US government put money for destroying communist image more than $700 milion. That is the point. He also needs money for his family.

What's the U.S. have to do with a Swedish reporter based in Thailand reporting about the influx of Chinese influence in Laos?

China has always been influencing Laos and its people since the dawn of Lao civilization. Where do you think the Lao people come from? Laos is situated in a place called "INDOCHINA" and what do you suppose that mean?

The destiny of Laos and China are interwine with one another. The assistance from China is greatly appreciate it. In order to modernize the Country we must ready to make some sacrifices. There is no such thing as free lunch!

China invested in Laos for variety of reasons. China acknowledge the fact that it cannot prosper alone without friends and allies. Laos and China share a common ideology and history. Both Laos and China had suffered immensely under the Western Imperialism in the last two hundred years. History has taught both Laos and China the importance of Solidarity and Unity. China and Laos are neighbor, it is unimaginable for China not to acknowledge their Southern neighbor's plight while China is in a position to render aid.

Why Laos?  Why China picks Laos? Why not Burma or Vietnam or Cambodia? Cambodia leaders have closer relationship with Chinese leaders.   And what the hell are these Chinese people doing here in Laos?  Are they going to settle here forever?  50,000 people or 50,000 families.   Either one, It's a lot, man.  And 50 year from now, how many young Chineses will be.  You do the math.   Chinese people are limited to have one child per family in China.  They can have more in Laos.  They will live luxuriously over Lao people who live day by day.

Where did you guys learn to be so racist and irrational? Don't tell me you guys are watching too much of Lou Dobb, FOX Network and Pauline Hanson of Australia!

Chinese are not invading Laos. Laos has always have Chinese population from the early days of Lao Civilization. It is not something new. Stop spreading your Western bigotry hatred into Laos and divide the people.
