Laozaa, a young IT company, will improve its website with the aim of increasing the number of users from the current figure of 658 to 2,000 users by the end of 2008.
“We will provide more services on the website including a chat room, a movie programme from Lao-ITECC and an e-market. We hope this will persuade more people to visit the site,” said Laozaa webmaster Mr Outhay Xayoudom, at a ceremony marking the one year anniversary of the website.
“Our team loves IT and creating websites. We established this website so teenagers could exchange IT experiences through the Internet,” explained Mr Outhay.
The website was established in April 2007 as an online association of IT enthusiasts. It provides information on IT topics, facilitates discussion on IT issues and provides an arena for people to share solutions for IT problems. The website has 15 employees, all local young people interest in the potential of this resource.
“Two percent of our users are in Thailand and the rest are local people, mostly teenagers and IT students in Laos ,” Mr Outhay said.
He explained that normally young people used the Internet to communicate with each other, but he believed the other services soon to be offered on the website would be popular.
The company's name Laozaa is derived from the words Lao, signifying the group of Lao people who share a common goal, and zaa, symbolising the website's aim of developing the IT sector in Laos .
The website is currently encouraging users to make use of the open source software available on the site. Open source software is software that can be used and modified by end-users.
“We have various activities to promote use of the software, but sometimes we struggle with insufficient funds,” Mr Outhay said.
The company is also cooperating with a Lao open source team to translate programmes used to create a framework for a website's content, such as Joomla and Mambo, into Lao. They are also working with the Lao Linux User Group from the National Science and Technology Administration to translate the Linux operating system into Lao.
“This month we will participate in ‘Joomla Day' in Bangkok , Thailand , to exchange Joomla knowledge and skills with other IT experts so we can develop the software in Laos ,” Mr Outhay said.
