Sabaidee peenong, Laos is going to use 3G mobile system very soon.
But I don't really understand what 3G mobile is all about?
What are the differences between the normal mobile phone and 3G?
And how much the price? I guess it must be very expensive.

that's good step for Laos..  give people some choices to make..  even in the U.S. not all cell phone providers are going with 3G yet..  most networks still using the EDGE network, which is alot slower for web broswer on cell phone..  compare to the 3G!  even the current iPhone is still using the EDGE system.. the down side to the 3G system is.... it drain the battery talks time.

as for the price... it might be a little more..

3G/UMTS is mobile technology with high bandwith. So you can get videophone or high speed internet on your mobile (or computer connected to the network).

The price is much more expensive that "2G" GSM, but everything depend the price policy of your mobile operator.

This also require a "3G" compatible phone, more expensive than traditional GSM phone

In France also we have the 2 offers (in fact, operators first developed EDGE, and now, they propose UMTS for people who have compatible mobile phone)
In my opinion, EDGE is not a good solution: it's strictly the same technology as traditional GSM (13kbit/s/chanel), but to enhance bandwith the system use many chanels in parallel... so you need a very dense network, and you have strong risk of saturation of the network

UMTS is based over a really new radio technology that allow each chanel to have a high bandwith.
