I've heard the Chinese are in Laos now.  I've read this block, they said there are 300 000 Chineses are comming.  Is that them?

Are these the Chinese that came to Laos in the last couple of years. They learn Laos language fast.  I'm having a hard time learning Laos.  But i do understand them a little.  WOW! I GUESS THE CHINESE ARE COMMING.

Those people are Lue of Sipsongbanna, our cousin in the north. They speak a dialect very similar to the people of northern Laos.

It appeared that certain racist element of the Lao Diaspora Community haven't learn their lesson. If they keep up with their xenophobic and bigotry way of thinking, pretty soon there will be no place for them to hide.

They are Shan people living in Burma. The language is Burmese. Have you ever heard about "Lao Loong people", who were forced by Siameses troop to leave Laos. Some are now living in Burma.

I'm surprised by the fact that somebody tried to discredit Lao government. Lao cultures and Lao language are well preserved. Don't worry!

So these are not Laos!.  Thank you for informing me.  I know i was away from Laos people and culture for a very long time.  I grew up in North America and dating white blond girl, and eat western food.  And i dont get involve with Laos people.

I did not think Laos would change that much.  Anyway thanks!

These people are Chinese living in Yunan province. There are Lao by blood. They have the same culture as we have. They celebrate the water festival in the same time as we do.

I see nothing wrong. Nobody would take our culture away. This culture belongs to Tai Lao by blood, but not only for Lao people living in Laos.

So these people are from Burma.  That is crazy!.  I did not know that they speak similar to Laos. Do the eat sticky rice? or play khean like Laos?.  That is crazy!.

I'm just curious why on some videos they dress similar to Laos and some similiar to Chinese and Vietnamese?. Do you see Laos culture moving towards them  or more towards Thai.  Or towards our own culture?

I learn something new today.  You mean there are more people like us around the world?.  And we are related?.  Why have i not heard of them my whole life.  I did not know they speak Laos in Burma or China.  All i heard was just Laos and Thai people.  This is great!.  Do they know about us?.  Do they know where Laos is?
Do they like us or hate us like Thailand?.

Yeah.  Scare the crape out of me today.  I thought this videos was from Laos.  I heard rumors from people that some Chinese are moving to Laos.  But it could have not change by that much.

This is crazy.  In one of the Videos there are three head elephant on the church.  I thought that was the old Laos flag symbol?. It only belong to Laos.

Who the heck is the Hmong?.  I thought they are Laos.  But i learned that they are Chinese.  But how come those Chinese from Burma i can understand, but i can not understand the Hmong when the speak.  What is the differences?.

Why are those Siamese trying to destroy Laos people, why do they hate Laos people so much.  I dont understand.  They are so mean.  Who are they?.  Are Siamese the same as Thailand?

My friend told me to watch an NBC news clip on MSNBC.  They said that the Thai destroyed the city of Vientiane three times?.  And all Laos people were their slaves.  From the North to the South.

Are Laos people still slaves to Thailand?

Think the alphabet in the subtitles that doesn't look like Lao, & also isn't Chinese, is Lue alphabet (see http://www.omniglot.com/writing/tailue.htm), which looks a lot like the Tham alphabet that Lao & Lanna monks use to write Pali & palm leaf manuscripts. Kids in some Lue villages in Laos as well as Yunnan still learn how to write the Lue alphabet.

The Tai Lue, Tai Dam, Tai Daeng, etc people in Laos, Tai Lue & Tai Yai (Shan) in north Thailand, Tai Yai in north Burma, Tai Ahom(? not sure) in north India, etc all originated in Sipsongpanna in China & migrated southwards a long time ago. Likewise for many Lao Soung ethnic groups (Mien, Akha, Hmong, etc). That's how the Lanna kingdom started. & the Lue had their own ancient 'kingdoms' covering areas like Phongsaly, Muang Sing & along the Mekong down to the north part of Sayabouly & Nan, Phayao, Chiangrai, etc in Thailand next door.

So many Lao citizens from the north are Lue & so many temples in north Laos are Lue-style (in Phongsaly, Luang Namtha, Sayabouly, Udomxai, LPB, etc).

Citizenship/nationality does not = cultural identity ;) They are merely a reflection of the current political situation & boundaries, & can just change with a war or coup or a new law...whereas culture lasts for a much longer time.

The reason i asked is that on Thai television, they said that all the prostitution in Thailand are Laos girl.  Is that true?.  Some i can understand when they talk.  But some they speak in Thai.  I can not understand Thai language.  I can understand Laos very little.

I was gonna go to Thailand for a vacation.  But now i have to think twice, if they are that cruel to Laos people.  Maybe i'll tell them, i was born in the United State.  Maybe they dont hate me too much.

It is untrue. When they said "Lao girls", means Thai Isan or Eesan people who are Lao by blood.

In fact, the prostitute women come from every part of Thailand. Thailand is famous in this matter.

I never dated an Asian or Laos girl before.  They are smoking hot. Not slutty hot like Thai chick.  Just innocent hot.

Lots of Lao-american and other Lao-foreign people visit Laos every year. Nobody will arrest you as long you do nothing wrong with regard to Lao law.

My relatives who have American citizenship visit us almost every year.

Is that why you don't post here often?

I think its just natural to look at people differently than you and try to associate them with something else that you are familiar with. Laos is a reclusive country, the people only getting things from the outside via TV. I mean, no offense but some of these comments sound like something ignorant Americans would make.

Lao in Exile and Lao Citizen share similar opinion:

I see no xenophobia but rather patriotism. Not only Lao in exile or "Lao Diaspora" as you like to refers to us, but also Lao citizen in Laos feel the same way.

Read this link: http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory?id=4599560

Here is quote #1 :

"The Lao people are not strong so they are afraid the Chinese will come in and expand their numbers and turn our country into China. We will lose our own culture," said Sithong Khamvong, a middle-class Vientiane resident and former Communist Party member."

"Lao journalists would like to write about this but they cannot. There is no protest except in coffee shops — in our 'coffee parliaments,'" Sithong said.

Ironic and hypocrasy of Laos Communist Party:

"Even some aging revolutionaries are critical, saying they fought to keep out the United States and others during the Vietnam War and now are seeing their own government opening the floodgates to foreigners."

Martin Stuart-Fox, an Australian author of books on Laos, says the old generation knew how to balance China's influence and Vietnam's and avoid being crushed between its powerful neighbors.

But this generation has passed, he said in an interview from Australia, and now "it seems to me that the balance is being lost."

Its both good and bad.

All this reaction is the result of years and years of isolation by the government. Years and years of being F-ed over by foreigners from the French, to the Americans, and even the neighbors like Siam, China, and Vietnam.

Isolation would have been a good thing if the culture were allowed to develop. Japan for example had long periods of Isolation that have led to a distinct culture.

But the money being pumped into Laos by China is so attractive, its maybe best to see how it goes over the years?

The ignorance and blantant racism of certain members of the Forum has nothing to do with my inclination to post in here. It's more on my ever increasing workloads, educational endeavor and my wife's recent culinary gift.

Lanxang,

Racism and Xenophobia is everywhere and it does not respect international  boundary. Yes, it existed in the Lao PDR and within the Party apparatus as well. As you can see that it is a problem that need to be address. The Lao Government are fully aware of it and measures are being taken to educate these individuals.

The geographically isolation of our Country has poised many problems for our leaders from time of Lanxang Kingdom to the present day Laos. The current Lao Government and leaderships recognized that the strategic importance of Laos to the region  called for a peaceful cooperation with all five of our neighboring Countries. The current Lao Government/Leadership  has so far successfully secured peace and cooperation from all our immediate neighbors.

As you can see we have had enough of bigotry and xenophobic on our plate within Laos alone and we certainly don't need to import anymore from the Lao Diaspora community.

Anonymous,

The Seminar Camp is no longer in operation. The Lao Government has successful consolidated Security throughout the Country and it is now at peace with all of its five neighboring Countries. Laos is currently focusing all of its resources on Economic Development and Poverty Reduction. The goal of the Lao Government is to remove Laos from the Least Developed Nation Status by the year 2020.

Based on the comments here, I don't think most Laotians know that these people have a connection to the people in Laos. They speak the old dialect (that's why you can understand some of the words) and the culture is almost exactly alike. There is no need to feel afraid of the Chinese taking over, they've already done so around the world. Just kidding. But seriously people, stop bashing the Laotian/Chinese people in the video. They could related to you and your family.
