(KPL) The Lao National Railway Authority and the State Railway of Thailand will start a trial train run between Nongkhai train station, Thailand, and Vientiane’s Thanaleng train station until 15 July (except weekend).
The Public Works and Transport Office said yesterday the trial was in preparation for the rail transport between Laos and Thailand. During the trial period, a locomotive with three bogies will run twice a day including Nongkhai-Thanaleng (9:10-9:25) and Thanaleng-Nongkhai (10:05-10:20), and Nongkhai-Thanaleng (16:20-16:35) and Thanaleng-Nongkhai (17:05-17:20).

Laos and Thailand have begun joint operation of the first passenger train service linking the two countries, marking a historic milestone in transport cooperation between the neighbouring countries.
On Friday a Thai train carrying about 20 passengers arrived at the Thanaleng train station in Vientiane , where Lao officials and immigration officers were waiting to welcome the very first people to arrive in Laos by train.
The train departed from Nong Khai station in Nong Khai province, Thailand .
A senior official from the Lao Railway Authority, Mr Somsana Ratsaphong, said on Friday travel on the train would be offere d free from July 4 to 15 from Vientiane to Nong Khai and anyone was welcome to book a seat.
He said passengers did not require a border pass, passport or official documents to board, but would not be able to leave the train, as the service was a test run of the newly built facilities.
“Just tell staff at the Thanaleng station you want to take the train and they will arrange the trip for you,” he said. “But passengers cannot leave the station in Nong Khai because they will be considered illegal immigrants.”
Mr Somsana said the service was being offered to test the railway and train station facilities and give people the chance to try out the train before the operation of a fully-fledged cross border service in the future.
The train will run twice a day on weekdays. The first train departs Nong Khai at 9:10 am, arrives at Thanaleng at 9:25 am and returns to Nong Khai at 10:05 am.
The second train departs No ng Khai at 16:20 pm, arrives at Thanaleng at 16:35 pm and returns to Nong Khai at 17:05 pm.
Mr Somsana said Laos and Thailand would start a regular international train service after the official opening of the Lao railway and train station in Vientiane , but was unable to say when this would take place.
After the official opening, immigration and customs officials will be deployed at the Lao and Thai train stations to sell passengers a single trip ticket from Vientiane to Nong Khai, which will cost about 13,000 kip (50 baht).
Immigration and customs officials would conduct document checks at each station, Mr Somsana said.
He said the service would mainly target people wanting to travel to Bangkok rather than those just going to Nong Khai.
The cross border train service is being offered following construction of the first railway in Laos , linking the Lao-Thai Friendship Bridge to Thanaleng train station.
