what did you guys think for those of you who saw it??????
for me i felt as thought he didnt really go around enough stayed mostly in the north. although it really was an eye opener episode instead of a tourist type episode. showed the truth of the americans involvment in laos and our feelings about tourists.
any other insites? id like to hear more from everyone
I agree that he didn't really travel to various regions (mainly the north), but keep in mind that this was only an hour long episode and there's only so much that you can squeeze in that alotted time without being too brief.
With that said, I felt that this seemed like an unsufficient amount of time to really expose and go indepth about the beauties and reality of Laos life. It was just the tip of the iceberg. By the time the episode ended I found myself wanting to watch more, but I guess that's where he leaves you to go on and search more information on your own if you were intrigued enough.
There was one part where one of the guides said something along the lines of "This is what your people left us with..." in regards to the bombs left from the war. At first I thought that it was kind of blunt to say that but then I realized that this is reality and there are consequences for every action. Just because the U.S. decided to dump their remaining bombs into Laos, hundreds of thousands of the innocent have paid with their bodies and lives decades after the event. As the guide said, there were over 11 million (correct me if I'm wrong) bombs dropped into Laos, and only approximately 400.000 have been safely cleared. That's LESS than 0.5 percent!
After watching it, I was reminded how much I miss being there after actually traveling there for the first time 5 months ago. A trip back is definitely on my list of things to do in the future. I just hope that this is only a first of many television episodes discussing and exposing the beauties of the Lao culture to the world.
yes!!!! i saw the show and watch it twice... i really enjoyed it!! i'm glad he went and show the rest of the world about Laos.. after seeing the show, the next time i'm in Laos.... fore sure, i'll be making my trip up to Xieng Kwang..
for those who said.. he didnt stay or cover other cities.... c'mon nowwwww!!! i'm sure there's budget and time constrain for them.. it is impossible for any networks to go to Laos and film it in every cities.. stop complaining and enjoy..
I thought the show was supposed to focus more on food since it's Anthony Bourdain, but it focuses on history and culture which turns out to be appropriately fit since Laos is not well known in the US. It was somewhat touchy when it features about how badly the US droped the bombed on Laos' soil during Vietnam war since most American aren't aware of what happened in Laos during that war. It's definitely an eye open for those who don't know about Laos, let alone the location. It sort of left the viewers wanted to explore some more, perhaps go see it in person sort of way...I thought it's was great...
