Vientiane (VNA) – The Lao National Assembly (NA) has adopted a proposal to provide roughly 1,000 billion kips (close to 10.7 million USD) to help civil servants cope with increasing prices.

The proposal, part of the planned budget for the 2008-2009 fiscal year, was made by the Ministry of Finance, and approved by NA’s lawmakers during the fifth session taking place from July 16-27.

Under the proposal, a civil servant will be paid at least 405,000 kips monthly compared with the current 337,500 kips, Finance Minister Somdy Douangdy said.

The salary subsidy will take effect from October 2008 to the end of September 2009, the minister added. –
