I have to agree with you, so maybe i m too young, just 99 yrs old, that why never see this kind of dance to call lao tradition dance. The costum is not laotion for sure. the female's looks like sink, but definitly is not. When watching the dance, it's the yao rithm. The other comment might be closed, when said if it is from Yunnan or who knows when the author of this original post did not state where is the location it accurted ?!
I would say that this more true to orignal Lao classical dance than the current royal lao classical dance. Tai Lue is in the same family as Tai Lao. I don't like Royal Lao classical dance it's very much like Khmer classical dance and as well as Siamese dance since Chao Fa Ngum brought buddhism from Cambodia as well as this royal classical dance. I like this type of dance and the dances that were performs at the Asean conference that Laos hosted a few years ago. I don't like the sound of "La Nat" instrument, I would prefer the sound of Khene and Sor.
Its looks new to you because you haven't have the chance to see the old Lao dance before. The dance, music, and custom was back when we (Lao) still live in China. Our culture right now in present day (Lao) in Southeast Asia got a little bit influence from the Khmer people.
