DES MOINES, Iowa -- Des Moines police continue to piece together exactly what happened Thursday morning on Columbia Street.
The incident started around 6:30 a.m. when police responded to the scene after a report of a drive-by shooting atColumbia Street and East Seneca Avenue.
"I woke up at a quarter to six to a commotion outside," said neighbor Mandy Caldwell.
"It was a loud voice but I couldn't make it out," said neighbor Jim Pierick. "It wasn't yelling. It was just loud voices and it sounded like they were having a disagreement or something."
When the first officer arrived, he found a woman's body in the street and a block away a second woman was found dead inside a car that had hit a utility pole.
Police said Bounpanh Xayavongchanh, 32, was the woman in the street. The woman found dead in the car was Amalia Vasques, 60, Xayavongchanh's neighbor.
Police said Vasquez was apparently driving down the street at the time of the shooting, stopped and called out to the gunman, Nath Inthaboun, 30, who then fired a shot at her. She then drove away at a high rate of speed and hit the utility pole, suffering from the gunshot wound.
"She was able to drive away," said police spokesman Sgt. Vince Valdez. "But of course being shot, she was obviously dying as she was driving away."
Following the shootings, police said Inthaboun went back inside the home at 3616 Columbia St. where he and Xayavongchanh lived. When police approached the house they could see him inside holding a gun.
More than two dozen police officers then surrounded the home while negotiations took place.
At 8:14 a.m., police SWAT teams swarmed the house, ramming in the front door and throwing in flash grenades. Police said Inthaboun and the children were upstairs and he fired shots at the five officers as they climbed the stairs.
Police said the Inthaboun's gun then either misfired or was out of bullets, allowing officers time to overtake him and grab the three children.
Police, seconds later, rushed back out of the house holding the three children. KCCI reporter Amanda Lewis reported that the children looked shaken, but OK.
Valdez said Inthaboun was taken to a Broadlawns Hospital. It was first reported at the scene that the he had taken his own life, but police later confirmed that he was alive. Police said Inthaboun did not suffer any injuries.
Inthaboun is now charged with two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder for firing at officers.
"Inthaboun told us he was angry," said Valdez. "He went out and shot her."
Nath Inthaboun is charged with 2 counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Amalia Vasquez and Bounpanh Xayavogchanh.
Inthaboun is being held in the Polk County Jail.
The three children were Xayavongchanh's and Inthaboun's. The children are now staying with their grandparents.
"They had family get-togethers in their driveway all the time," said Caldwell. "It seemed like they were pretty happy, but I guess not."
Reaction
Co-workers of Bounpanh Xayavongchanh released this statement Thursday afternoon:
The doctors and staff at Iowa Heart Center are deeply saddened by the loss of our co-worker and friend, Bounpanh Xayavongchanh, whom we affectionately referred to as “Bunni.” Bunni worked as a registered nurse in nuclear testing at Iowa Heart Center for two and a half years.
“Bunni was a happy, smiling person who loved to joke with coworkers. We will miss her deeply,” says her supervisor, Tisha Murphy. “She was an excellent team player who volunteered to help out wherever it was needed and always made sure our patients were well cared for.”
Iowa Heart Center has set up an internal memorial fund for Bunni’s family. Employees of Iowa Heart will be able to make payroll deduct contributions that will be donated to the family.
“Our hearts and prayers go out to Bunni’s three young children and family as well as our staff who have worked closely with her,” says Murphy.
Man, Tha's sad. Lately, I don't know what is wrong with Lao people, there are quite a number of senseless killings. There were two innocents people got killed by the very person that they know here in Murfreesboro, Tn. The story was that the guy plan to go back to Laos and hold a get together with friends. During the get together one of the friends was talking too loud and the other friend told him to quiet down. Then the arguement started between the two, then fight broke out. One with loud mouth got beat up with bloody nose. The one got beat up left, and the one that beat him also left. The only people were left at the house were innocent people that had nothing to do with the arguement, or fight that took place. The guy got bloody nose actually went to get his friends, and when his friends and him arrived back at the house they went to the back yard and started shooting. One man was peeing in the back yard got shot and the host that plan to leave for Laos was taking the trash out and got shot. The shooters came to the door and kick the doors apparently, the doors were lock. Thankfully, many kids inside the house were safe. The police didn't arrive until morning, I guess they didn't care since it's Lao kill Lao. 2 dead, 1 critically injures. This is a true story, it's ashame really. It gives Lao community a bad reputation. 2 got caught and the one that started it all is still on the loose. The people involved here are in their early 40s with family and kids.
It is said these kind of people do not care about the live of the kids they are affecting. I believe no matter how screw up your life is just don't let it affect the kids. Look like these kids will grow up knowing their father killed their Mom and the father is in jail. And the murder of those people in TN. It just make me want to close my door to Lao community and never come back.
Wow! It's really sad story happened with the kids in USA. It's not clear what was the cause of the killing according to the story. No doubt that there was a big disagreement between them.
I guess, it could be the case his wife was not royal to him like she had affairs with her boyfriends. Unlike western men, Lao men really cannot be patient with such kind issue.
I believe that Lao people in America watch American movie too much I heard many kinds of these news a lot, and in many cases, the Lao people living in America was the criminal
It doesn’t matter who’s killing who and/or what race you are, killing each other is bad period.
I live in Des Moines as well, I don’t know the couple though, from the story that I’ve heard they are going through a divorce and this Sunday is suppose to be their final day.
Those that knew the guy couldn’t believe that it was him did the killing. They said he was a good person and never seen he shown any temper.Whatever they were going through I guess we’ll never know, must’ve been really really bad to crack a person up.
My thought and prayer are with their survivors, especially their kids.

Life is so precious and this SOB just simply took it away is very sad indeed. I don’t know if Iowa has a death penalty, but a double homicide is usually considered a capital case which means he will be sent to a state prison without any possibility of parole or face a death sentence by means of lethal injection. Either way he is already a dead man. At the age of 30, he has so much life ahead of him; however, it’s too late to regret now. This is another reason why I never want to own a gun because the chance of using it always exists and the consequences are too painful. I can’t imagine the buildup of stress while waiting through court process then face a capital trial that leads to capital punishment. In his case, he will be housed with the group of violent criminals. And after a death sentence hands down, he will be sent to a death row waiting for the execution which normally takes 10 to 15 years of suffering before his fateful day will finally come. Many naturalized Laotian Americans especially, men do act tough. They hardly ever discuss about education in any social-gathering events. The moment they have alcohol in their system, their discourse would be about fighting or about pride and very seldom we would hear them mention about college or university.Folks at our father’s age would brag about their past military ranks, their connection or association with former dignitaries in Laos.Frankly, I would rather hang out with Laotian born Americans than those naturalized citizens for the sake of safety and compatibility.By the same token, I don’t mean to portray all our people are bad and with all due respect, many of our naturalized Laotian Americans do hold high paying jobs in various fields and some have a very high living standard.I don’t want to make generalization here, but based on my past interaction and observation, I was able to discern then disassociated myself from them years ago.It was really bad influence when I hung out with those folks and it took me a long time before I realized that.In no way I am being arrogant or conceited, and I certainly don’t regret my decision of detaching myself temporarily from my very own people. I had learned values of different social class from different ethnic background. In the end, it helped to project and prepared myself for my own good.
