Oh my god, Tuk-tuk, jumbo service to continue in Vientiane !!!

Tuk-tuk and jumbo stations along major roads will be relocated but services will continue in Vientiane , an official said on Tuesday.

Vientiane Public Works and Transport Department Deputy Director, Chanxay Vinavong, confirmed to Vientiane Times that tuk-tuk and jumbo services would continue past 2010, but management would be improved to create a more regular and reliable transport service.

“There have been some rumours that tuk-tuk and jumbo services will be banned in Vientiane from 2010 on, but this is incorrect,” Mr Chanxay said.

“Many of them have worked in this career for a long time, if they are banned, what will they do? How will they earn a living and support their families?”

He said misinformation had led tuk-tuk and jumbo drivers to worry about future unemployment, and was a factor in them failing to pay membership fees to the Tuk-tuk and Jumbo Association and taxation to the government.

“Our master plan for transport in the city was written by technical staff from the Japan International Cooperation Agency and showed that we still need to use these kinds of vehicles in Laos to help the country transition,” he said.

He explained the vehicles served a specific purpose, particularly in smaller lanes in the city centre and suburban areas where there were not enough larger public transport vehicles such as buses.

Mr Chanxay said tuk-tuk and jumbo services were likely to decrease in the long-run due to an import ban on these types of vehicles.

The department intends to improve services by relocating inappropriate tuk-tuk and jumbo stations, particularly those on major roads including Samsaenthai, Setthathirath and Lane Xang.

It will specify appropriate roads for services to run on, such as lanes in the city centre and suburban areas.

“We are discussing in detail whether the vehicles will be allowed to run on major roads or just across them,” he said.

“I can't say right now whether the vehicles will be allowed only to cross major roads.”

Improvement work will be undertaken in the near future once traffic returns to normal after recent disruptions caused by flooding, he said.

Mr Chanxay highlighted the importance of smaller public transport providers obtaining membership of the Tuk-tuk and Jumbo Association. He said properly registered vehicles could be identified by association signage they were required to display.

He warned the public to be aware of illegal vehicles which were not certified and may be unsafe.

“Legal operators are obliged to obtain insurance and undertake regular safety checks of their vehicles before being permitted by the association to carry passengers,” he said.

Statistics last year showed there were almost 4,000 tuk-tuks and jumbos in Vientiane , but only about half of them were legal.

I really confuse with our Lao officials.
Once they said that all tuk tuk will be banned in Vientiane before 2010, and now they said it is just a rumor? what is the points here?
If you don't believe, read the old topic here

1. Vientiane strongly confirm to ban Tuk-tuks, Jumbos

2. Shock ! No more Tuk-tuks in Laos by 2010 !!!

HELLO: Please propose to the Japanese government to help create or develop a new and safer Tuk Tuk and the Jumbo vehicles for Lao transportation so that these kinds of transportation modes will continue to operate in all cities in Laos.

Certainly members of this forum do need to work on their basic English comprehension. The news article clearly stated:

"Vientiane authorities are continuing to study the feasibility of banning tuk-tuks and jumbos from the town centre in 2010."

The keyword here is FEASIBILITY.

great news! and i hope we will soon be able to get "new generaton tuktuk", more safe, economical, less noisy and enveronment friendly!

Tuktuk is a great tool and i hope Vientiane will keep it's tuktuks for a long time

well, i do hope they don't completely phase out Vientiane's tuktuk and jumbo; maybe making them a little better, a little less noisy maybe, improving its look or regulating its rates and destinations, they would be good. I like your tuktuks. They're far batter than bangkok's tuktuks.

i am no Lao, but i thought of how economical these modes of transportation are. taxis would be an expensive option for commuting within the city. since it's just a "feasibility study", then I am sure they will find out that the phasing out of such vehicles will do more harm than good. keeping fingers crossed anyway.

Por Sil See,

LOL  Is not a big deal if you don't understand English. Don't get mad and calling people names and speculate on what you don't know. Admit your mistaken and learn from it.

Thank you for your effort in correcting my English grammar and typo. Now, I am more conscious about my grammar and typo. As you know English is not my native tongue. Unlike you I am not a citizen of a Foreign Country.

Genius,

Do you think the Lao Government appreciate it when you slandered them? I was merely giving you the tastes of your own medicine. I would think a veteran Lao Government critic like you would have a tougher skin than this. Your displayed of emotional outburst above only show how shallow a person you are.

Por Sil See,

That is very mature and respectful of you! It really show how educated and civilized you are. You are truly a role model for the Lao Diaspora community.
