This is another reason why I did not jump to the conclusion when I first heard the news of their generosity. I did not believe their offer is impeccable without any expectation for profit sharing. Thailand needs stability in Laos for their own gain, so they would do what they can to maintain friendly relation not that they care crap about us.
Sadly, Laos is not capable of hosting all the games due to its financial hardship so almost half of the sports events are to be eliminated; as a result, some other bidding countries are quite unhappy about it especially their athletes who without a doubt expect to perform their best, must now have to wait for another Asian Games. We Laotians should be grateful for all the considerate supports from those countries because without their compromises, there would only be a dream for Laos. As I had said in my other posts, if this event would generate revenues for locals and state then I am all for it as long as is not in the expense of our people. Nonetheless, I personally don’t think that Laos is ready for this showcase given the fact that we are still deprived so much. But if the Laotian governments believe the benefits would outweigh the defects, then I wish them luck. It is the most crucial event in our history and the majority of Laotians probably second this milestone consensus.
Other potential benefits are the opportunity to show the world our geographical location, our unique culture, the beauty of our tradition and the experience in hosting the game itself is equally important. The building of infrastructures would be another incentive, so Laos can learn from it and in the foreseeable future, we can reduce heavy dependency on foreigners. When we are poor, we negotiate from a weak position and the government would not tell us any forced concessions behind the scene.
SEA Games ’09 in Laos on verge of cancellation
By Julius Manicad
09/05/2008
A major squabble is seen to erupt within the Southeast Asian Games Federation and may force the possible cancellation of the 25th SEA Games set in Laos in December next year.
Go Teng Kok, Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) sports and rules chairman, yesterday revealed the biennial meet is on the verge of getting scrapped following the escalation of a marketing and revenue-sharing conflict between the host country and Thailand.
Thailand initially vowed to support Laos in its first hosting of the SEA Games, offering use of its facilities for events which Laos, a former French colony, has no capability of hosting.
Laos will only host 22 events, half of the 43 events which Thailand hosted last year.
Thailand, however, withdrew its offer, prompting Laos to scamper for resources to be able establish the multimillion facilities needed for the Games.
Laos is also said to be seeking 75 percent of the television rights and for changes in crucial provisions in the current charter of the SEA Games federation. The host country is also batting for a headquarters to be established somewhere in the nearby Thailand.
That would leave all SEA Games members sharing whatever would be left from the 25 television revenues.
Go is set to attend an urgent, two-day “extraordinary meeting” on Sept. 8 in Laos in an effort to save the Games.
Go said he will meet with Thai sports officials in Bangkok before boarding a 45-minute flight to Vientian.
“They are cooking up something. With the way they talk, you know that something wrong is going on,” Go said. “We will not go there to talk about sports, but to talk about the charter change. That’s the reason why all other countries are looking for support.”
Despite the troubles hounding next year’s biennial meet, POC president Jose “Peping” Cojuangco remains upbeat they will overcome another controversy in the troubled organization.
“They are all men of honor,” Cojuangco said. “These leaders have been there for almost 30 years, and I know they will come up with a decision that is beneficial to everybody.”
thanks for sharing the info. i still can't believe they cut half of the sports from last year and still thinking about cancel the event.
i hope they can put their act together and put on a good show. anyone know if the main stadium is close to be finish yet? what about the new golf course?
Laos is too poor to host the SEA Games. Many SEA countries members are not happy for Laos, the host country, doesn't have enough facilities and officials to hold the games and thus their athletes don't have any chances to participate in the games. Poor Laos.
you are you Lao? what kind of food do you offer to your guest when the guest visit your home?
example: a poor family
I am 100% sure that you will offer the Chicken shop or Lap sin & Lap Pa to the guests even thought it s not easy for you to get those foods, but for the warm welcome and your face, you probably borrow money from your friend to buy the food and beer.
It will be a sad news if Laos could not host the SEA game 2009. As we may know well the status of our country as a poorest country in SEA, however, it does not mean we could not do anything. we can obviously see for Laos hosting ASEAN summit few years ago....I believe prior the summit, many people questioned that could Laos be a good host...or was Laos ready to build such infrastructure, meeting venue, etc. Finally, Laos could show us that a small country could serve as a good host as well as other big ASEAN countries if concerned authorities, ASEAN members and Lao people were united as one.
I hope SEA game is a challenge for Laos, but i hope we can achieve the goal if concerned Lao goverment, private companies, Intl organization, ASEAN members and all Lao people help and contrinute effort and energy as well as financial resource and human capital for this event...Laos can do it.
Let's cheer for Laos as a goos SEA game host in 2009! ZuZU LAos
I have said it before and I will say and keeping saying it again. Laos PDR have no business hosting huge, international size, events such as this. It does not have the finance, human capacity or infrastructure to support something like this.
YES YES YES YES. The money that will bring is great. If it is done right. But if it is not, Laos PDR will be a laughing stock of the entire ASIA.
Without doubt that Laos would be able to host the SEA Games 2009. Nothing cannot stop the move. Lao government and Lao people would try their best to reach this ambitious goal.
There is no any success on earth wouthout fighting to get it. It would be stupid, if Laos would wait until the day when Laos is rich to host this Games.
I really wonder why our country don't have an accounting statement(ບົດວິພາກເສດຖະກິດ) in each project. we always made the same mistake again and again, never learn and try to improve from those mistakes. It's no any metter for us to discussion that being the host of SEAGAME is good or bad.if we have the good and correct accounting statement you will know how much will you earn from being the host , should be or should not be... for this time also the same mistake that done without any plan before and try to excuse the mistake of decision later. victim is resident who is innocent and has no power, they have to lost their lands for the government's wrong decision , with low pay. I won't say nothing if the LAO government is pay enough for residents or use goverment's land to respond their mistake. it's unfair for them. think about people who lost their land for the seagame and get the low pay. If the Lao government really make it fair for residents they should open the information and report how much that they pay back for them. we well known that the lao government just keep quiet and run everything by forcing. before discussion about Lao is ready to be the host of SEAGAME or not, should discussion that does the Lao government fair for the victims or not they don't do anything wrong, they just plant rice, working hard with their daily life, but they have to lost their land just because the government's wrong desicion without any plan. if you were the victims and for your whole life you have only 1 land that from your hard working but is robed, what will you feel? to Lao government and lao people who support this project, if you have a little bit of kindness, just make it fair for them. don't just make a flower report and say everyone happy with the paying. you let the China Company paid for them just 1m2 per 3,000 Kip, my question is if you were them will you happy for the paying and where can u buy the land from the price? how could they buy any land to live as the old one?

Well, it's a good intention for Lao people. But from what you wrote, I undertand that it's just your opinion. You don't know a reality. You have no any evidences to support your claim. You just suspect, I guess.
However, I do believe that those people, who were relocated, were compensated with reasonable properties long time ago.
In addition, I would advise you learn more about Lao law in connection with land. You will know well how Lao government do with the land owners.
I have a doubt about your knowledge of our Lao history. If you know this you would not have a doubt on the good will of our Lao government.
you wrong Mr TSP I 'm one of the victim that's why i know what have happent in real i went to listen what the government stuff have talked by my ears. you live in out country so you don't know what is going on. if you don't trust my talking when u visit lao on vocation you can go to ask residents who live in Ban KOK Noi, ban Kok Yai... 8 villages (i don't remember all the name). prove it by your ears! just remember what i said.
on your view what deos the hero mean? the person who fight for people and won in the war, but after the long way they have sold and have taken every thing from country can we call those people is hero? nothing different with america, france or sayarm had done to us. you should think hard about what the reality is, not just listen what they have told you.
one more thing Mr. TSP, you learn from the history which wrote by the LAO Government. the person who won in the war is a hero. i doupt your view on it either. find out by yourself, if you have internet on hand and think hard by your brain and read alot! don't be a blind at all. don't just follow what they have said, you should have your own idea. i have seen only, how much that they have taken from country, selling gold, rob lands from residents, lot of corrubtion, cutting forest, even bring china people coming to country, how much it will enough? did you open your eyes? or just close your eyes and let them take your hand to walk?
1. who made the law? 2. whose country? government's country? or lao people's country? 3. do the government can do everything that they want? even the acting is hurting people, and the action same as sell country. blind people just follow what other said, cleaver people always have a question and find out by themself!!!!

all those are own by goverment they tell what to report. Lao don't even have good hospital for the high ranking official. if the other goverment want to kill those goverment official they just pay doctor in thailand to put them to sleep and it this.
you wrong Mr TSP I 'm one of the victim that's why i know what have happent in real i went to listen what the government stuff have talked by my ears. you live in out country so you don't know what is going on. if you don't trust my talking when u visit lao on vocation you can go to ask residents who live in Ban KOK Noi, ban Kok Yai... 8 villages (i don't remember all the name). prove it by your ears! just remember what i said.
Well I do accept your point. I also do feel sympathy you and familly about the fact that you had to relocate to the new place or you just lost your old land and have gotten new land.
However, from what I learnt from world practice no people in any country can keep their land forever when it comes to the government projects. People have to sacrifice their lands for government's needs. According to the Lao law, Lao people have no right to own land, but they have rights to use their lands as long as your land doesn't fall to government project.
By the way, judging from your statement, I feel that you now are not in Laos as well. You forgot the villages names. Don't you?

what did you learn from other country? you don't learn any good thing from other country. if government has project , they will go to explain the content first, and ask premission from residents and find new place or new living and have to satisfy their need. if government could not satisfy their need the project will stop. did you know about it? might not for the vilages name , you can go to ask people at ບ້ານໂຄກນ້ອຍ,ໂຄກໃຫຍ່.... and the village near The seagame stadium. the news Lao Government do not open it just doing quietly, just ask people who lives in the villages to listen their talk and sign for them, so they can make a flower report, people can't say nothing because they are afraid. you don't know and don't see what the stuff said to people who have to lost their land. when they asked what should i do with my house and how much that they will pay for, the government stuff said just go to ask Chinese. you can doupt my talk, but think by your brain, make a question and findout by yourself. remember this sentenses: brainless people just follow what people said cleaver people will just listen, make a question and findout by their ownself!. my question to you: who made the law? whose country? do they can do and take everything from country just because they used to done the war? what the hero is really mean? should we call and respect them as a hero? look at the reality what have happen in our country now. i believe that you are smart and have education , please ask yourself will you work for the government or work for LAO people! just sharing some informations you don't have to trust it at first, come back listen people talk, look at teenager and society and think hard, WHY and HOW Mr TSP. find out by yourself!
The Lao National Sports Committee (LNSC) has accomplished the goals set for the previous three months of preparation for the 25 th SEA Games to be held in Vientiane next year.
At the Prime Minister's Office on Friday, the national sports committee held a meeting to summarise its work and plan its tasks for September to December.
Standing Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the 25 th SEA Games Organising Committee Somsavat Lengsavad and senior officials attended the meeting.
Mr Somsavat said Laos had been given a great honour in hosting the SEA Games. The event would serve to strengthen the country and boost solidarity.
He suggested the committee should set out clear plans for assistance and cooperation with other countries.
From September to December, the sports committee will cooperate with Singapore to prepare for the event.
The Vietnamese government will assist with the installation of IT systems and electronic equipment in the new football stadium and the indoor stadiums to be used in the games.
The national sports committee will hold a Miss SEA Games beauty pageant and will build a digital clock in Vientiane to mark the countdown to the games. The time will run from December 31 this year until the opening ceremony of the games in December 2009. The clock is to be sponsored by the Lao Brewery Company. The Thai Tourism and Sports Ministry will spend about 21.3 billion kip (84 million baht) to renovate the national football stadium, tennis courts and the sports department's indoor stadium.
The ministry will also pay about 1.5 billion kip (6 million baht) towards the training of LNSC officials, as well as referees and athletes.
The committee will also receive assistance through cooperation with doping control staff from Vietnam and Thailand . At the end of this year, the committee will open the sports training centre and athletes' accommodation in Vientiane , to be built with assistance from the Vietnamese government. The Lao football, judo, karatedo, wushu, wrestling, pencak silat, swimming and diving teams are currently training in Vietnam .
Also in the past three months, committee officials improved their skills at the Lao-Singapore Cooperation Centre in June and planted 500 trees around the new football stadium.
In May, the committee held discussions on work plans for the games including accommodation, food, decoration of the city, tourism, traffic, telecommunications and other work.
The committee asked the Olympic Committee of Asia and the competition organising committee of the SEA Games to assist in running the games.
Athletes' accommodation is under construction at the National University of Laos, assisted by the Vietnamese government.
Last July, the committee visited Incheon district in the Republic of Korea , where district officials provided them with sports equipment worth more than 3.5 billion kip (US$405,000).
When Lao government officials attended the Olympic Games in China last month, they signed an agreement for SEA Games cooperation with the Chinese government in Beijing . The Lao wushu and shuttle**** teams will attend training in China ahead of the games.
Singapore helped with tourism promotion for the games last month. This month it will work on business communication for the games and next month plans to assist with hospitality management.
The new football stadium where the opening and closing ceremonies of the games will take place is 65-80 percent complete, the indoor stadium is 90 percent complete, the petanque field is 80 percent complete and the taekwondo court is 95 percent complete.
