Education should be reformed faster: Lao PM

The government is seeking to speed up implementation of the national strategy to overhaul the education system, as part of efforts to drive national development. Officials assessed the progress of education reform at the monthly government meeting on September 18 and 19, chaired by Prime Minister Bouasone Bouphavanh.

According to a press release, the progress made has yet to respond to the needs of national development, especially the improvement of education at the grass-roots level.

The meeting advised the Ministry of Education to take an active role in hastening the reform process, starting with the enactment of necessary legislation to strengthen the education system while addressing the weakest areas.

Much more should be done regarding inspection in education, including the private sector, to ensure human resource development was in line with Party policy.
The ministry was also assigned to address the issue of teacher and supplies shortages in schools. The government was aware that many schools were unable to open on schedule for the academic year 2008-2009 due to flooding.
However, the government appreciated the improvement of the curriculum in parallel with enhancing teaching standards through training.

Infrastructure has been developed to prepare for the expansion of the formal education system from 11 years to 12.

The whole Lao education systems and economic sectors should be reformed in parallel ! This is to ensure that those students who graduated from universities will have a job and their knowledge not just drain to nothing or flow to other countries.

I guess our "Sa Hai LPA" is part of this movement?  Lao government send him here to study and brings the knowledge back to help build Laos.

Sa Hai LPA, If I can, I like to make one comment.  I know it is not relate to this topic.  Why is Laos selling the electricity to Thailand?  When some part of Laos still are without electricity.  Shouldn't Lao government focus to provides to the people first?  I'm asking this question cause our "Sa Hai LPA" is Electrical Engineer.

The government faces two major challenges: to connect 70 percent of the country's households to reliable electricity supplies by 2010 and 90 percent by 2020; and to develop its huge hydropower resources to enhance revenues from the export of electricity.

Yes!! I do realized that it might cost some $$ initially.  But, still is not a good answer to say that it is not feeable.  Although it is feeable to transfer across the MeKong River to Thailand?  How do you explain that theory? Another word to your answer is just leave those people in the dark?  How would you feel if one of those people is your family?  You should think about this little harder.

I agree with this guy assessment.

Education reform alone is nothing but a waste. The country will have lot of educated people but no job. Train your people and have them work outside of the country is not good policy. You want your poeple to work in your own country.

Government should do what it can to bring business to the country but without disregarding human right, environment, and country.

Seeharhed,

Simply put: Thailand have the capital that will help the Lao government accomplish its national electrification projects.

Laos sold Thailand electricity to get the necessary funding to support various projects in Laos. It's boiling down to money! We need money to pay for workers and materials to run electrical lines to remote areas within the Country.

Regards,

Lao People's Army
