The Lao Cement Company last Friday held the final round of a beauty contest to select models to feature in their 2009 calendar. The event, in its fourth year, took place at the Lao Plaza Hotel, Vientiane, where a judging panel selected six winners and Lao media agencies selected one winner from a total of 20 contestants.

A student from the Faculty of Hotel Management and Tourism at the National University of Laos, who is also a well known television presenter on Lao Star Channel, Ms Siewphing Xayalin, will be one of the models posing for the company’s calendar.

“I never thought I would be one of the winners. I think it just happened by accident, because I didn’t intend to compete but was persuaded to by my friends and family,” Ms Siewphing said. Ms Siewphing said this was the first time she had entered a beauty contest and had enjoyed the activities organised before the final round and the opportunity to make friends.

The six winners each received 6 million kip, the media vote prize-winner received 2 million kip, and 14 consolation prizes worth 1 million kip were presented.

Other young women to feature on the calendar will be Ms Viengkham Phoummathep from Dondeng village, Chanthabouly district; Ms Dalounny Chanthachak from Hongkha village, Chanthabouly district; Ms Phonmany Soulinyathon from Akaat village, Sikhottabong district; and Ms Keosili Khanthamixay from Phatang village, Vangvieng district. Ms Lattanaphone Sengsavang from Phonepapao village, Sisattanak district, was also selected by the judging panel and took the media vote.

Vice President of Lao Cement Company Mr Vanthong Sitthikoun said “This is an annual event which we organise with agreement from the Ministry of Information and Culture and the support of judging panels from media agencies.” “The contest aims to boost the use of Lao cement both domestically and internationally and promote a national product,” said Mr Vanthong. “More than 100 women from Vientiane, Savannakhet and Borikhamxay provinces registered for this year’s contest,” he said.
