Why new Thai PM always pay a first visit to Laos ?
Bangkok - Embattled Thai Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawak will visit Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar next week despite problems at home, foreign ministry sources said Thursday. Somchai, who was appointed premier on September 25, will visit Laos on Sunday, Cambodia on Monday and Myanmar on Wednesday, the Thai Foreign Ministry announced.
He has scheduled similar one-day visits to Singapore and Indonesia in the near future, said a ministry official.
Somchai has had a tempestuous first week in office.
Anti-government protestors stormed Parliment on Tuesday in an effort to prevent Somchai from reading out his government's policy statement, a first step towards legitimizing any new administration.
Although the protestors, followers of the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD), failed to prevent Somchai from entering Parliament and launching his rule, he had to flee the parliament compound later in the day by jumping a fence and hopping on a helicopter.
Somchai has come under heavy criticism for allowing police to fire tear gas canisters at the demonstrators, leading to a bloody clash between police and PAD members Tuesday that left two dead and more than 400 injured.
The PAD is staunchly opposed to the return to power of former premier Thaksin Shinawatra who was toppled by a coup on September 19, 2006. Somchai is Thaksin's brother-in-law.
Despite the rocky start for his government, Somchai has vowed to keep all of Thailand's international commitments, including playing host to the Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit in mid-December.
There are many assignments for newly elected Prime Minister of Thailand must do after he takes the position, i assume that Laos and Thailand must talk at the present , especially in the importing electricity that Thai gov is expecting to buy more from Laos, To negotiate about the construction of 3rd friendship bridge from thakek-nakhonphanom , discussing on railway project and the loan, in addition, the most important thing to boost the relationship , economic cooperation and trade between two countries and ASEAN.

I thought the people of Thailand is trying boot him out of office? All those protesters in the city of Bangkok and it is been going on for almost 5 months now. I haven't been following any political news from Thailand. This new Thai PM is Thuksin's brother-in-law right?
The PAD of Thailand argues that the largely rural base of support for Mr Thaksin is uneducated and says the voting system should be changed from one-man one-vote to a more controllable system of professional constituencies.
I feel sad to hear. I have a feeling that one day Isan and Lanna people would definitely declare independent from Thailand as they are always looked down by the Thai people.
If they have no right equally to what people in Bangkok have, why should they be called Thai citizen, I just wonder?
PAD isn't so democracy at all when they discriminate by calling poor rural people as unducated to vote? Something is totally wrong with Thai politic, and I now understand why Isan region has never been develope to its potential. Because they have dumb politcal parties in Thailand like this. I have a brother in-law in Laos that's running a restaurant and guesthouse. He said Thailand shut down its airport due to this political turmoil. This affects his business.
Why new Thai PM always pay a first visit to Laos ?
Because, Thai always has problem with its neigbors, the only country that never makes trouble and weaker than them in everything and unstubborn is Laos...
Plus... we speak though not the same but quite similar and our pure heart of making friends with any country no matter the histories were.... and the implementation of open up policy makes Laos always the first visit of tenure of their PM....

**** them. They're a bunch of un-democratic, fascist, royalist retards. The government WON the election, the PM deserves the power.
Why should a very small portion of the population, the same portion that is ubberly rich and aristocratic rule and protest and baby and whine agianst a democractically elected government? They should die.
I knew many famous Lao in Thailand who was borned in Laos with faults information on their Thai citizenship cards. As for Mr Somchai, I've never said he was direct decendant from Luang Prabang, it was his grand parents who made their new home in Central Thailand just as the mother of Rama the 9th.
don't afraid that dictator will take over thailand surely it will come sooner or later. thai ask a advise from laos now. and laos alway have big heart n readay to advise.
Somchai cancels planned tour of ASEAN October 11, 2008 By Piyanart Srivalo, Supalak Ganjanakhundee The Nation
Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat has cancelled all of his foreign trips to Asean neighbours next week due to the domestic political turmoil.
Somchai was scheduled to visit Laos tomorrow, the first country that Thai leaders traditionally visit.
The cancellation came amidst suggestion by former deputy premier Chavalit Yongchaiyudh that a military coup might be the only way out of the ongoing political crisis.
Chavalit resigned as deputy prime minister following a police crackdown on protesters early Tuesday.
Army commander-in-chief General Anupong Paochinda yesterday dismissed Chavalit's suggestion, saying that the military should not take sides in such a political conflict. He added that lessons should have been learnt from the coup of September 2006.
However, the Army chief called on the government to take responsibility for the loss caused by the crackdown. "There are many ways for the government to show responsibility. I don't want to mention them. Everybody involved knows well how to make our country progress," he said.
Foreign Minister Sompong Amornwiwat was in Vientiane yesterday for his first official visit and to prepare for Somchai's arrival.
The prime minister had for weeks planned to visit Cambodia in a bid to mend sour relations resulting from border disputes over areas near Preah Vihear and other Hindu temples in Si Sa Ket and Surin provinces.
On Tuesday, at the height of the police crackdown on protesters in front of Parliament, Somchai held a meeting with top brass and other relevant officials about preparations for the Cambodian trip.
The prime minister also planned to visit Burma on Wednesday, Singapore next Friday and Indonesia on October 19.
The government did not give a clear explanation for Somchai's decision to postpone his foreign trip, but one official suggested the premier was not ready to answer questions from Asean colleagues about the domestic situation and violent crackdown. Two people died and more than 400 were injured in Tuesday's events, including more than a dozen riot police.
His Asean colleagues might also have asked about the Thai government's readiness to host the Asean summit to be held in Bangkok in mid-December, the official said.
On questions of his resignation or House dissolution, Somchai said: "The country belongs to all of us, but let me see what I can do for all."
