AT LEAST three neighboring countries have agreed to help Laos when it hosts next year’s 25th Southeast Asian Games in Ventiane.
The Lao National Sports Committee Web site reported that Thailand, Singapore and Vietnam will be chipping in their share to help the Laotian government in the ongoing preparations for the 2009 biennial meet.
LNSC officials said the support for Laos’ hosting of the games was the main agenda during a formal meeting among Prime Minister Bouasone Bouphavanh, 25th SEA Games chairman Somsavat Lengsavad, and other senior sports officials.
The Web site announced Singapore will help in the technical side in the preparation for the various events, Vietnam will assist in the installation of informational technology systems and electronic equipment in the different venues, while Thailand will spend around 84 million baht (US$2.43-million) to renovate the football stadium, tennis courts and the indoor stadium.
The support will give organizers enough funds of some $174,000 for the training of officials, referees and athletes, aside from the installation of a digital clock in Vietiane to mark the countdown going into the games’ opening. The organizers also plan to hold a Miss SEA Games beauty pageant.
Vietnam and Thailand will also send experts to assist in Laos’ doping control system during the Games.
The Vietnamese will also help Laos in constructing an athletes’ village and a sports training center which will be operational by the end of the year. Peter

Laos probably didn't realize how much works goes into hosting ASEAN games. Now, big brothers will step in and lend a helping hand. The pressure is on, they have about a year to finish with all constructions.
