Scientists say drinking a cup of coffee a day reduces the risk of developing memory loss in aging individuals and Alzheimer's suffers.
According to the study published in the Journal of Neuroinflammation, caffeine cuts the risk of dementia by blocking the disruptive effects of cholesterol on the brain.
Findings showed that rabbits on a caffeine and cholesterol laden diet had a more intact blood brain barrier (BBB) within three months compared to those who had not received any caffeine.
The study showed caffeine protects BBB breakdown by maintaining tight junction protein expression levels and stopping unwanted molecules from entering the central nervous system.
Previous studies had reported that high cholesterol levels could cause the BBB to deteriorate or leak, which makes the brain susceptible to damage and leads to Alzheimer's.
