nice Lao houses are still very ugly
Permalink

I'm looking at very expensive houses online, and I'm not very impressed by their design.

By looking at several sites, houses in Thailand are cheaper and far more beautiful. But even compared to American homes of comparable prices (Texas real estate), Thailand homes are still not impressive. Additionally, the decor in "nice" Lao homes are often times appalling, but that is understandable. I know that construction techniques differ in America, but I'd bet that they are the same in Laos and Thailand, but Thailand real estate still looks so much better.

A $500,000 house in Vientiane -

A $500,000 house in Bangkok -

I'm annoyed by:
- no internal wires
-no central ac
-no carpet
-too much wood
-no color
-ugly crown molding
-lack of nice light fixtures, kitchen sinks, faucets, etc...
-awkward floorplans. Lots of houses are simply vast open spaces with a living room in a corner.

Even in the nicest houses I saw, the walls are always white and concrete, electrical wires run about the walls, and the floors are either ugly wood floors, or cheap-looking title.

What I can't stand the most are the bathrooms. I'd expect in a $300,000 dollar home, there would be an inviting bathroom, but that wasn't the case. No cabinets, the entire room is lined with tile, exposed pipes, ugly mirrors, no isolated showers, etc.

I realize the state Laos is in, but I figured that for the very lucky people where money was no object, their homes would be better. Does that mean that this is the best Laos will get?

You should learn how to appreciate the culture differences of the places you are visit. It is impossible that everywhere on earth are the same.

If every design or decoration are all the same as usa, how can people identify people's identity ?

Anoter comment, buy youself a new house, and change the style of it by yourself. The more money you put into it, the ideal place you gonna get for yourself.

That's my comment.

I know what you mean.  I once stayed in a hotel (northern Laos near Plain of Jars) and also visited distant relatives' house (modern style - looked good on the outside, inside was okay) in Vientiane and both places have exposed wirings and the plaster job was not so great.  It annoyed the crap out of me.  Hopefully, it will get better in the future.

Hmm...because plain concrete wall slabs and exposed wiring and plumbing is deeply rooted in Lao culture right? Using that logic, we'd never improve if we were stuck to the qualities of a single ''culture''.

The design or decoration can be different, and it should, but the materials, hardware, and construction can be improved on.

...and that is my point. If these houses are several hundred thousand for such plain primitive designs, how much is it going to take to make a house that would be universally nice?

$500,000 NO kidding?

Why everthing in Laos is so expensive? Like 5 times than in Thailand.

This house in Thailand is only 3.39 millions baht (<100,000$).

The gap between the rich and the poor in Laos must be very big. Much biger than in Thailand otherwise how can you buy that kinda house in Laos. The rich keep richer and the poor keep poorer.

i agree with you in some point, you probably live in aboard too long or you have big idea like western's and please listen to my opinion about it. the house is so expensive in Laos. because all the construction materials are not cheap. even if  laos has a few cement factories in Vangvieng, In khammuance and vientiane, but it's not enough to supply the whole country and the price are a bit lower than thai cement , but some people prefer to buy thai cement due to the quality .
House design , normally from the design company  that they ask very high price to build and design a nice house that will increase your capital $, if the design sketch made in thailand, some Lao construction company think that it's so hard and too expensive to build in Laos, thats why building a nice house is so damn expensive.   secondly  Laos don't has professional internal designer or artist  as you know Laos population less than 7 millions, as far as i know there s no school to teach you in Art or internal designing or design Major, if laos has this school, i think it's not good to learn and no good teacher? that's why you migh look the house inside is nothing special, because Lao people has their own taste, they don't follow western much and don't have the designer to do for them, if there is, i think they will cost you an high price.
Normally the idea for the modern house is from the wooden house, we used to live in the wooden house so long time and when we have a nice house ( villa) or house which made by cement, we will still keep the old idea. for example, furniture , No need a flower vast, no need a sofa and don't consider the color of sofa with the ceiling and ground . the kitchen always full of many lao stuff  blabla,,,  the living room always place a Tou show ( the cabinet which place many stuff to show to the guest, for example : photos, valuable stuff blabla..

so, those house are necessary to hire an internal designer to help to design where to place, which color is good and match with another.however this can make u a little understand why the house is expensive and ugly in Laos.

regards

This pictures below is my apartment that I rent for 1 year contract when I go to work in Bangkok. It's in Sukumvit 31. Very nice interior design and look very asian style.

The house that you shown above I think it depend on the interior designs. If you don't like the design then you must to go to hire the interior designer

This is shower and toilet room. Very open but nobody see me from outside when I'm taking shower

Kitchen is very modern just finger touch.

And this is my picture but sorry I dont want to show my real handsome face

You just go to the see the engineering company and see what stlye you want to built. Then go to see the interior designer to see what design and furniture and other home deco you like. The design center they have everything.

If you want to built it by your own then you don't have to go to work already. Let them do it for you. You no need to go to buy cement, pillars, sand, bricks and find working and engineer, find a glassworker, building constructor, welder, steel bender, painter, plumper, mason, electrician, carpenter and you have to go to look for your A.C., furnitures from refridgerator till pillowcases. For what?

But he's saying, you don't think the original ownders of the house designed that themselves? Of course they designed it, and that is what 500 thousand dollars of material, hardware, and construction will get you. That is his point.

I agree with the post above.  I suggest you build your own house.  It definitely be much cheaper, probably half less than prices of already-built-homes.  I would go to a contractor in Thailand.  Thailand has professionals that specialize in just building and house construction just like any modern countries.  I've been in Thailand before and their houses are beautiful inside and out.  Personally, some are nicer than in the U.S.

You won't find it in Laos unless you build it yourself.  Laos is still a 3rd world country.  We are in the process of developing.  We don't have modern companies with educated professionals, yet.  But I'm sure, soon enough, we will have lots of talents like Thailand.  It just takes a little time.

My parents built a house in the year 1999 for less than $70,000.   I think right now it probably worths $200,000 - $300,000, maybe even more.   It's a big house.   It's beautiful, ONLY on the outside.  The inside is ugly.  Just like how the author of the 1st post said it.  My parents put the construction in my uncle's hand.  He built lots of houses in Laos.  All Lao style, still old fashion, except the outside.   No blueprints, no plans, non of that.

Built it yourself and make sure you are there.  Have a professional from Thailand to do it for you.   I sure wouldn't spend $500,000 on a home like that.  I bet you $500,000 would get you like a mansion if you build it yourself.
