Hope I don't offend anyone... Some modifications to Boy in VT's translation: ___________
Lao-ITECC will be one of the venues for the 25th SEA Games, the first grandiose regional event ever to take place on Laotian soil. The 25th SEA Games organising committee has selected this shopping centre to be the competition venue for three sports, namely Sepak Takraw, Pencak Silat and Wushu (Chinese martial arts), during the 25th SEA Games to be held in Laos in December 2009.
Mr. Souliyong Youivanivong, General Manager of Lao World Co. Ltd. stated that construction of the ITECC started in 2003 and was completed in 2004, with the purpose of serving as the main venue for hosting ASEAN-related meetings in February 2004, the 10th ASEAN Summit in November 2004, and other international meetings that Laos has had the privilege of hosting. Besides this, trade exhibitions displaying agricultural, industrial and handicraft products and consumer goods have also been held here, as well as receptions (what receptions?) and wedding receptions. The ITECC can accomodate up to 2000 guests. It also has a 32-lane bowling centre, two cineplexes and snooker halls. Due to its easy access and convenient facilities, particularly its large parking lot, the ITECC holds trade exhibitions twice a month showcasing local products as well as products from neighboring countries such as Vietnam and Thailand.
During the 25th SEA Games, the ITECC has been designated as the competition venue for the three sports mentioned above. Sepak Takraw and Wushu will take place in the main hall of ITECC and Pencak Silat will take place at the reception hall on the second floor. In late November ahead of the Games, the 25th SEA Games organising committee will conduct improvement works such as installation of lighting and seats to accommodate 1000 spectators.
In order to contribute to the success in hosting the Games, ITECC will charge no rental fees and kindly help pay for electricity and cleaning services. During the Games, ITECC will allow exhibitions to be held in its parking lot so that spectators will be able to buy things (what things? souvenirs?) home. Moreover, Lao World Co. Ltd. has also gained the privilege of providing breakfast, lunch and dinner for approximately 3000 to 4000 Laotian and foreign athletes at the Athletes Residences located in the National University of Laos.
Mr. Souliyong futher stated that a subcomittee for Public Security will be responsible for security-related matters during the Games and will conduct in-place security commands to ensure 100% security of the same standard that Laos has previously provided when hosting international events. Have underlined the parts that I'm not clear about (I can barely read Lao because I'm not Lao).
Sepak Takraw and Pencak (pronounced as bpoen-jak) Silat (Malay martial arts) are the Malay language spellings and also the official/internationally recognised spellings of the names of those sports.
'SEA' has to be written all in capital letters as it is the acronym for Southeast Asia(n).
Having said that, Boy in VT writes better than many of the graduates I've met from Lao-American College, RBAC & NUOL's English department...
Boy in VT did a very good translation. I hope you were there when I was needing a translator.
No offense, just want to share some suggestions related to fourpaw's improved version.
* You can safely write "wedding receptions" straight away. It gives the idea already.
* "things" can be replaced with "products to take home" as not all products for sale can be considered as souvenir (ex. pastries, delicacies)
* Does the last underlined phrase means "...implement in-house security measures to ensure 100% security standard similar to that Laos has previously provided.... "?
