I did a right click at the photo, and check the link. What I found was that this photo is hosted in China, and it is about tourism in China, so I guess, the location of the scene in the photo must be somewhere in China.
I don't think this is in Laos. I've seen this picture somewhere. The location is very well known, it's where the Mekhong river makes a nice curve, which is located in Yunnan province, China.
does the name of Lancang Jiang (Lan Cang river) come from Lane Xang (Chinese language doesn't have any 'xa' sound but it has 'cha'...so maybe they followed the Thai pronounciation 'Laan Chang'?)
no, Lancang in Chinese means "turbulent" and jiang means river. So the name Lancang Jiang doesn't have anything to do with Lan Xang "million elephants". It's just a coincidence, that's all...
