Do you mean Lao people have to watch CNN, BBC, and those of American TV, so that we can preserve our Lao culture ? there are so many good things to learn from Vietnam and Thailand
Laos is free country,Laos is open , we can watch many Channels from Chinese cable tv, Thai, Russia, India,Japan, CNN,BBC, Only 30.000 kip for a month, where it's like tv system in Laos? now, there are good and interesting programe on starchannel of LAOS , i think it is the good begining of Lao Tv business.
Oh, Please stop acting such a narrow mind person, I'm sorry to say this. I really believe anythings that our today's childrens can get and learn from our neighbors country is a plus for them, It' either intertainment, educational, political debate, and as well as how they run their country. all of these things is General Education for them to know our surrounding neighbors, and sure I'm completely understood what you were saying or tried to put your point acrossed. and I also believe in today's world " It's up to the parents to monitor what their kids watches or not, In today's world the kids growing up fast I mean really fast and very smarter than 20-30- years ago..Please do not worry to much Brother/Sister...

Very good answer, I want to see more Lao people answer very smart like this
Laos PDR is being torn apart from different direction and Laos government does nothing about it. What about promoting it own culture and tradition to its people should be high priority.
I saw Laos TV programs. It is like it was made my students. If the shows are horrible like that no one want to see them. I sure don't. I got tired of just watching the propaganda film footage from the Vietnam War era.
I see here that both sides have good points. Its true that TV is one of the media for education. But while the Lao government is opening its doors for foreign channels, it should at the same time pay attention and make efforts of improving its local channels. If locals are only watching foreign programs because they find it more interesting due to the lack of good quality local programs there really is a risk of loosing your Lao identity. There will be a tendency to just imitate what is the trend in Thailand or Vietnam for example, because people lost touch of what is the local trends. This risk is higher among the rural population, those living far from the city or town centers.
I think having a balance between foreign and high quality local programs is most beneficial if the point is educating the Lao people who have just been very recentlly opened up to the rest of the world. This way the people will be better educated because it will allow them to compare similar or related issues happening domestically and internationally (e.g. current financial crises, AH1NI pandemic, etc). They can decide whether or not Laos has handled the issue better or not than the neighboring countries, and if the case is the latter, then Laotians can choose the best practices of their neighbors and apply it locally.
having stated this, its high time that Lao government give support to its local producers and facilitate opportunities for local talents (meaning actors, singers, dancers, etc) to enhance their skills so people will find them interesting to watch on TV.
You might want to include Chinese TV too? In some parts of northern Laos, every TV set I saw was showing China TV channels.
People in any country will vote with their brains & eyes for what they find the most entertaining. So it's up to Laos to improve the quality of her TV programmes, radio programmes, newsreaders, sports commentators, & film & music industries.
I do agree that some Thai TV content isn't that good for anyone (including Laos). Many foreigners find that their content lacks intellectual depth, & is full of negative stereotypes & bad examples (e.g. husbands beating wives, portraying hilltribe people as 'lower class', too much violence & sexual content). But my Lao friends told me that in the past, films made in Laos also had such stereotypes e.g. bad guys are always dark-skinned people from Savan :P
I think you should come and invest your own private TV station in Lao. If you make it nicer and more productive and nicer than Thai or Viet then I will be one of your TV members
Look at the real Lao in the real world. It's not that easy to make a good TV station. A lot of problem and we don't these super riches Lao businessman to make the station and make a good media team.\
Don't just think idiot but never do anything properly
If you don't like to watch Thai or Viet then you just change to other chanels..that's it! Why make it so complicated?
People are not stupid...people know and have sense to choose which TV programs is good or not good just to suit for themself.
those who run the country need to think fast. before it 's too late Lao is nation with identity, no more colony. we must act like one.
this not the matter of who make it better, but it's mater of national identity and culture..................................................................
i 100% agree with you on that.
any one here ever produce any creative video products ?
please try one and come back for more opinions. it's easier to say, than to do. to produce such products you need an army of intellectual from many many different expertize. the equipment - should be the last technology what the world offers. how about the fund ?
all of these thing cost money. after (if) you produce, you will need to sell it and who will be your customers !? can they effort to consume it? the lao population is 6-7 mil. the price of these products (high quality as you wish) is the same in laos, thai or anywhere in ASEAN.
it's not for the use for Junta and it's member ony,
TV is not rocket science, with support and stratagy policy of a good governance our people can do anything. instead of let viet or thai set up Viet or thaiTV in Lao, why don't make them investor make investing in TV Lao creating job and experty in the country , with lao speaking program , lao soap, lao news.
Lao is Viet's Debtor, if Lao is unable to pay back, Lao will be Viet's Colony in the near future. This world, there is no free Lunch.
hahahah you must be joking right? first of all the viets are the ones that owe the lao people. viets would have never won the war without laos help.
1) ho chi min trail i belive was 90 percent on lao territory,
2) dien bin phu where viets won against the french was on lao territory back then so take a good look at history before you ssay those ridicoulas words.
3) viets have no natural resources so pretty much they have been leeching off of laos for some time now.
so please dont joke around like that again. kop chai
I agree 100% with whoever that come up with this topic. To whoever that do not concern about thai media will destroy our culture and language can you explain this picture?. Can you tell me what's going on here? the way they dress and the way they play is all from watching the thai TV. I went to Laos last year, I heard most of the young girls said JA JAH is not even lao language. Where is our identity? why do we copy other country culture? where is true lao?
And many more Thai listen to Lao songs, such as songs of Cells, L.O.G, Lang, and so on. Lao songs are also air in many Thai radio program, while thai songs are not allowed to air in Lao radios. Alexandra speaked Lao on many thai TV program and drama, and Thai people have learned to speak and listen to Lao more and more. It is kind of globalizatioin and no more wall.

by sacrifce our own language inserted tons of thai words in the song. That's not something to be worthier.
If they will listen, why don't let them listen with it's originality lao togue. i guess when people come to lao they want to see and to listen to the best of lao. not the fake one. some song are so mixed that it neighter lao nor thai, and that it's not good for both lao and thai language.
It is a big concern now when many Lao teenagers does not use correct Lao language. They are likely to speak Lao mixing with Thai language and this looks deliculious and ashamed to hear. For example, they like to say "JA" and even in the music, they do not use correct Lao word such as the mixed Lao and Thai words used in the song of Nalin and many other songs of other singers. In other words, the Lao entertainment sector is not a good model for teenagers. Instead, they are bad model to use Lao mixed Thai language in a number of songs. We don't really why the ministry of Lao culture do not do the checking of how the media use the Lao language. Moreover, now most teenagers do not use "Heuan" for the meaning of House but instead they use "Barn" for the meaning of house.
Now we can see that even the Lao media still use incorrect Lao language. As we see in the Photoes in Lao New Year. The Lao media use the word "Lian Baeb". This is incorrect because it should be "Hian baeb" not "Lian baeb".

who told you that Barn is not Lao? it is correct to use Barn instead of Heuan? actually Thai and Lao are very close, Thai people use very correct of Pali and Satsakit and but Lao is not.

Every Lao men has complain about us and want us to be like in what you want Lao ladies to be like this like that? But you guys don't understand and know how we feel. We are the new Lao girls genertion. Please understand OK
some people are quite stupid and not open their mind about this, now is globalizition, what the hell is wrong if Laos copy from thailand or other developing countries in the world, because now everyone, every countries copy each other, i think that someone here should understand that, if Laos want to get out of the world's poorest countries list, Lao has to copy and do as the world do, understood? as for thai and Lao language, whats wrong with that? who want to speak thai, go head as long as make clear of understanding and know how to correct Lao on the paper?
you guys here are so young to understand what is really thai and what is really Lao language and culture,? what wrong with the photo that Lao girls wear short-pant and wear not LAO STYLE t-shirt? ask yourself what is your underwear brand? it's time to get out of world's poorest country, my country, don't wear Lao skirth doesn't mean that forget the culture? you guys always complain about this about that, complian about thai tv blabla bla, but you guys never act and done anything? i am Lao can I say that?
it's like the goods that import from vietnam and china, the lao consumer don't want to buy them and complain about the goods and complain about its quality, but never relieze that Lao don't have the manufacturers that can produce and make those goods, why are Lao complian too much about that?
Look at Lao Tv , as long as turn your tv in your living room, iam not sure that 99 % of channels are Thailand and others, don't complain about Lao Tv that, imposible to produce a good programe or more entertain? the problem you areadly know in your heard, but it is not because of the Lao government don't want to do it, because of what we need is a new technology , what we need it's hardware and many accessories that make our station bigger and better, so where are the money? who are going to fund Lao Tv station? How many domestic enterprises will go to do the advertisting and pay for it? beer LAO? Lao tel? what else? Laos tv can't invest that much money for improving our Tv progame, because all is the money, Laos Tv doesn't has quota?
you may know well if you grew up in this land lock country Laos, the people who live far away from vientiane can't receive any Lao tv signal from their home, all the channels are thailand, chanel 7, chanel 3 ,5, blabla, why do you guys blame and complain about Thai Tv? you guys must have said thanks you which the Tv provided a lot of entertainments and news and update the world? if we would wait to see update news from Laos, i would say that Lao people would be blind and uneducated thourout the country.
I personally think that, want to say Thank you thai tv for providing me to learn about the world, to have many good catoon when I was a kid, to give us some comedy and many thing you can learn from Thai tv? sorry, i never speak thai since I watched thai tv from my mom bought a first tv.
what was the bad thing that you got from thai tv and what was the good? compare it and stop complain it agian, my borthers and sisters in SAMAKOMLAO.

I understand you,
and i did not say that thai tv is bad , lao tv is good. as i said it 's not about that
it's about balancing forieght influence with our own distict indentity and culture,
and the most important instrument in todayworld is media, the TV
one who control media is the who control people thought,
it is too much risky in all aspect of society to let foriegt media to influnce and change all our identity.
I don't think the goverment try hard enough ,
I think lao has load of money enough to do this, but it just hide in certain indivitual pocket in our ruling party.
I don't how many student has been sent aboards to study some technique to improve our Tv? i don't know how many people that really know to manage and edit. design and work in Tv station? i am afriad that some of them has been studied the angriculture at Tadthong university? or some of them has graduated from Train engineer from russia University and work in National television station? you are probably right brother, the government is not workhard enought to improve and develop the Lao tv, the government is not workinghard enought to improve the media and newspapers, but we see a little changed after 1975
1. Radio seems work more effective than before, the quality of voice on Lao radio is very clear . now we can listen the local news from radio and listen news from the central government. wow!! before it was suck, because the signal were covered by the Thai radio signals.
2. Local news Tv established in the last few years ago, the Lao people able to receive and watch what's going on in the district ,it's quite acceptable and better than nothing even thought it's bored after the news and music.
3.Internet media is not satisfies me, because Lao english news and more interested website as vientianetimes.org.la , the reader has to pay for online newspaper, who is that so stupid to pay and read lao news, many news such as CNN, BCC and thailanf manger.co.th are not required to pay. but Laos yes . the government site as Kplnet, vientianemai and others seem only report the government officer has done well job, the government officer has visited there or the world aids laos with many amount of $$$$
ok. I don't want to talk amore what the government has progress in the lastest years. where is the money? in the pocket? or save in the national bank and need a quota?

I agreee with you. TV is the most ciritical of all media in terms of influencing peoples decisions and preferences. with newspapers, people need to spend longer time reading an article to get the message, for some its even boring; it doesn't even reach those who are unable to read. Radio is the next most effective media as it can have wider coverage and people will only have to listen. But with TV, it stimulates the senses. you dont even have to know how to read and write, just observe the actions and audience can somehow get the idea already, that makes it more effective.
If you have knowledge on marketing and advertising, you will understand that TV provides subtle message to the public. It can even make or break a country depending on the message being promoted/ advertised. Hence, if Laos is serious about promoting unity and independence amongst its people, one of the investment that it should consider seriously is investing on quality TV broadcasting.
What is being debated here is not an issue about way of dressing or imitating slang words, its about maximizing the use of TV to promote nationalism and sense of identity. many countries are imitating trends of other countries... so whats wrong with that?? nothing... but it can turn into a risk if not balanced by continous exposure to local trends, which usually reflects the over-all identity of a nation. Come to think of it.. if you are living in the far north or far south of Laos where people can only watch foreign TV programs and in effect made them very updated about international news, then only find out about the going ons in Laos from foreign media... dont you find it absurd?!?!
if you compare Laos media and China, Laos is more open, chinese media control their cilivians very well, chinese just can Watch Local tv, Install dish or sattelite are illegal in china, in contrast, Lao people are lucky that able to receive the foriegn Media such as Cable tv that you can receive both thai and falang channels. what about vietnam's tv programe?
did you see the adversting beerlao on lao channels, it's on anytime , so our children see it anytime when the Lao channel turns on, but the government say'' Sao noum pen ga douk san lang khong sad, pen khan khua khong gan pa ti vat'', sao noum bor tong long lai nai soula nali, bor tong long lai nai ya sem tid... look at the advertising, Beerlao, Beertiger, beer carsberg all the time.

The smallest kid around 3-4 years old ( Bannok or countryside 's kid) start testing a little of beerlao due to stupid parents give them to drink. but it 's not called social -drinking, small kid just love the taste because they thought it was tasty and something new, the kid probably wonder, why the hell do my father and his friends always drink it and want to try?
social drinking or drink to get a drunk and hava fun, the age start at 14 years old if you dont believe me go to some provinces outside vientiane and join the boun ( festival) which holds locally and join any special event such wedding and Basi, you will discover it , the girls and boys start to drink Laokhao and beer from the young ages and some start smoking A( red) or red flower which made in Laos.
Khonnai muang like in Vientiane, the cipital young generation, as far as i know and have seen in the beershop, there are teenagers, under 18 start drinking beer, some of them with school univerform. it's sad to see our teenagers become the drinker at young ages, damn.
Come one guy. We are 100% Lao. It is not hard to distingish between the word "Ja" and "Jao". so don't explain me the meaning of this word because i completely know and understand. If you don't beleive me. You can talk to some teenagers aspecially girls and you will know that they do say Ja .
