I think you guys are all mess up !
The capital city of Cambodia is Phnom penh, and not spell like Phanompenh.
There are many words in Lao that sounds Phanom, for example, Phanom cave, Phanomyen waterfall, etc...

they named the street to honor relationship with Cambodia. In USA, there are alots of street that named the same as the big city of Laos, most of them in Laotian community.

in centre of Vientiane has not only Phnom Penh street there is Hanoi street as well just in the same area with Rue Phnom Penh.

yes, thai and lao cannot pronounce two ajoining syllables into one, Many original khmer words are corrupted into the following. Hense Phanom --> Phnom (Mountain). Sawadee --> Soursdey(hello). Vatsana -->Veasna(destiny). Chaabang-->Chbang(fight/conflict). Kradang-->Kdang (type of flower). Krabueng-->Kbueng(style). Kanom --->Knom(biscuit, pastry,dessert.

Would you considered "พระ" is a one syllable word or two syllables word? To me it's a one syllable word "พระ" not "พะระ".
