The government in Laos recently passed a new law making it easier for foreigners to invest in the country and buy land.
But some Laotians are concerned that the law puts the country in danger of being overrun, particularly by Chinese investors who have poured more than two billion dollars into Laos in the last nine years.
Al Jazeera's Wayne Hay reports from the capital, Vientiane.
Lao government's a sell out, they'll sell everything in the land to trade for their own riches... I'm sadden inside knowing Land of a Million Elephant has already been own pretty much by Chinese and Vietnamese. I bet Chao Fah Ngum, Chao Anou, and my own ancestors probably crying from heaven. Shoot what am I saying, million?, we're lucky if we even have a 100. I can only pray that a new line of government we come and change things, we need change "YES WE CAN!"
