Lao girls tricked into sex work

Published on September 17, 2009

11 young women rescued from brothel tell minister of scam

A human trafficking gang smuggled young Lao women into Nong Khai before moving them to a traditional massage shop in Phetchaburi for sex work. They did this by disguising the young women as tour bus hostesses, Social Development and Human Security Minister Issara Somchai revealed yesterday.

A total of 11 Lao girls and young women aged from 15 to 22 were rescued after a raid on Saturday on a brothel in downtown Phetchaburi. One man and two women were also arrested.

Issara visited the victims yesterday at Baan Kredtrakan Shelter in Nonthaburi's Pak Kred district.

The minister said he was told the young women were lured by compatriots to work as waitresses in a Nong Khai restaurant. The restaurant owner allegedly taught them how to dress beautifully, how to put make-up - later billed at Bt4,000 a set - and took some girls to an eyebrow tattooist to make them look prettier.

The restaurant owner paid for these costs but later made the girls repay all expenses. They were then convinced to prostitute themselves and the restaurant owner would either take the girls in personal cars send them on tour buses, with the girls disguised as hostesses to avoid police attention.

Costly transport expenses of Bt15,000 to Bt20,000 were also charged and recorded for later collection from the women, Issara was told. At the massage shop, they were forced to provide sex services for customers at Bt510 per time, although the girls' real payment was just Bt150, while the rest went to the managers.

For those who had not repaid their supposed debts, the Bt150 payments for sex went to clear "debts" first. Thus, many didn't earn a single baht until the "debts" were paid off, he said.

All the rescued 11 women told Issara they had repaid their debts but hadn't kept the money they had earnt from sex-work. Instead they gave it to the brothel owner.

Some of the girls who had worked at the shop for eight months had given the brothel owner up to Bt50,000, Issara was told. The owner would then wire the money to the women's parents in Vientiane, while the women had to stay at the brothel at all times and weren't allowed to go outside.

Issara said all the young women told him they wanted to go home and never wanted to work as prostitutes again. He said the women would be given accommodation, three meals a day and vocational training while at the shelter, until their case went was dealt with by a court, which should take around three months. They would then be sent home.

their is no compassion or room in my heart for those type of people who would do that to your own kind.

those people who tricked those women should remember  that when it is their turn being mistreated no one will pay attention to them and show them compassion.

those ppl sicken me. at the bottom of my feet.

Oh please do not generalize. I have met many smart and intellectual Laotians both locally and abroad. Those people who are walking to the wrong path and leading other Lao to the wrong direction are just few rotten tomatoes. Please be open-minded you may despise those who purposefully commited crimes and wrong-doings, but please dont make it look that all Laotians are stupid or delinquent because that is SIMPLY NOT TRUE! I still hold high respect to both common and people in authority who are working hard to make Laos a better place to live.

Cheers Laos!

One day there will be no such thing as Lao anymore accept in our history text. Laotian oversea don't know nothing about being Laotian and language, culture and tradition already lost. And the one in Laos is turning the same path as those oversea because Lao can not accept there own. And for me I am now westernized I rather be that then Lao because there is nothing that I can be proud of or even have common interest in anymore.

They also need to undergo counselling, they are so young and the bad experience can forever taint their persona if not properly counselled. Usually those women will have low self-esteem and even if they are given alternative sources of income, some later revert to the "old ways" and even become professional prostitutes.

This is happening everywhere in the world. I hope people will stop taking advantage of the young and innocent. They deserve a better future.

The youth is the hope of the next generation.

Your comments consistently sound too negative toward Laotian in general and by referring to all Laotian instead of using the word "some", makes me cringe every time I saw your post.  Your ostentatious claim of being westernized won't impress anybody and it would be a wrong assumption that your English represents a correlation to a minimum standard of educational level despite your implication of condescension. Making a reference to certain group of people or individuals as to the whole race would be too prejudiced under any circumstance. It will simply create a dust up and ignominy between you and others.  I would normally respect any point of view, but yours is exceeding its reasonable bounds. There are organizations in the United States that are actively involved in an effort to preserving Lao Culture. I would give you the link below and see it for yourself.  By the way, I do agree with you on the subject of comparison between Thai and Lao. It gets boring after a while and I don't know why some folks are so obsessed with their expression of hatred.

Kwanjai isn't Lao, why care about this brainless individual. This poster sounds like Kwajai Buc Dum.  Laos don't need a person such as this. Stay where you're and be a minority the less of your low life in the west...

Peace>>Lao will rise!!

News like this we heard them like a broken record. People make mistake.  It's nice to know that they are now able to move on with their life. Lao Government is working hard to stop this kind of crimes.

Going by your name you are not real Lao "Lao blood is strong we would never say things like you just did:

Speak for your self and don't speak for the rest of Lao "I never come across any Lao that do not love their birth country"

You as individual choose to ignore your own langauge, cultures and traditions. I am here in America for 30yrs I am more Lao then you can imagined.

and please DO NOT use the word KONLAO if you don't know how properly using it. Judging by your comment you are a lost soul.

I am hoping you don't go around and tell people that you are Lao.

You seemed to be a lost soul, why not consider seeking some counsel. Im sure you could afford a psychologist with your richness. It would be for your own good. If you don't belong to any race what is then the purpose of your existence?

Watches are a beautiful thing. Certainly, they tell us the time - but aren't they so much more than that? replicas watches Through their watches, a person can express so much, and in a way it could be said:replicas watches Show me your watch and I'll tell you who you are.
