Well, Lao people are smarter compare to Thai. They have a lot of abilities to learn other languages, not just only Lao, but also English, French, Japanese, Vietnamese, Chinese, Russia and Thai

For me, I can now speak 5 languages fluently

There is one thing I know why are Laotian speak,
read and understand Thai and even French or English language.
Laotian are gifted in languages. They speak with
good accent. for example you could tell when Thai,
Vietnam or Chinese speak Lao. We know right away
what nationality are they. Laotian speak thai or any
other language if they can to make the communication
easier.

Nah. We can read, speak, understand or even write Thai, not because we are smarter than Thai people. We pick up the language from some text books (Thai) we learn in school, TV shows (Thai) we watch, music (Thai) we listen to, movies we watch, products we use...Thanks to all Thai media we consume.

Thai don't have access to Lao media or language. We can't blame them or think they are stupid. It's all down to access and willingness to learn the language.

Kino support his own comments "VERY LOGICAL AND OBJECTIVE ANALYSIS, Totally agree!!." biggrin
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MY LOGIC ANSWER IS LAOTIANS ARE GIFTED THEY HAVE ABILITIES TO SELF TAUGHT HOW TO SPEAK, READ, AND WRITE  MANY DIFFERENT LANGUAGES.

LAOTIANS ARE FAST LEARNER IN ANY SKILLS THAT YOU TEACH THEM.

There for if any human can self-taught that means this person is  EXTREMELY smarter than an average person.

Hahahah...Why did I have to do that? People have different opinions; some agree, some disagree.  I just happen to disagree. And some visitors to this site agreed with my disagreement.

Actually I don't have to prove anything. I'm just saying.

I read Thai when I was in 3rd grader in Laos. Non any Thai read and write Lao in their high school. Who's smarter?

Here is a real story why Lao read Thai and Thai can't read Lao?   Actually Thai doesn't have their own alphabets from the first beginning of Thai nation. The original of Thai alphabets was came from Lao and some of Cambodian. They created new feature some of them to look little bit difference from the originals one. This story was telling and showed how come Lao read Thai and Thai can't read Lao.

I dont think you can call this fighting. A smart laotian should know the difference between fighting and debate or exchanging of opinions, whether agreeing or disagreeing.

I was the one who said Kino's analysis is quite logical. Besides no country can be actually said to be smarter than the other. All countries can have both smart, dumb and dumbest people. The ability to learn different languages is not the sole gauge to determine the brightness or smartness of the citizen in ones country. These are affected by need (like when your work requires you to dealwith foreigners), environment (if the place is often visited by foreigners, thus, vientianne, luang prabang and vangvieng for example has relatively more commoner laotians  who can speak and understand english compared to other provinces less frequented by toruis for example), exposure (Lao TV is full of Thai programs; but Lao programs is rarely televised in Thailand) and personal desire to learn (can be self study; universities in some countries actually offer language courses for those who are interested to learn).

This is an extreme exaple but you may probably notice that some "uneducated" prostitutes can speak english better than educated persons in Laos or Thailand who did not intentionally work hard to learn english. That is because the nature of their work made them deal with a lot of foreigners and through the process of constant interaction developed that skill very well. But you cannot immediately conclude that these galee (as you call them) does not mean they are smarter than people here in Samakomlao who post comments in broken english, right?

Just think about it guys!

We, ( Lao Vientiane & Lao Isaan ) shouldn't get any trouble about listening and speaking Thai with Thai people in central and south zone of Thailand. When they speak or talk to us we understand everything they said so, even we read their writhing too. I feel bad and sorry for Thai people when we speak Lao to them, they don't understand us at all.

Sorry Khon Lao in The U.S.       I just want to correct your reply from HOW COME THAI DON'T READ AND UNDERSTAND LAO to HOW COME THAI CAN'T READ, WRITE, SPEAK AND UNDERSTAND LAO LANGUAGE?

Here is my understanding why?    Thai used Lao, Korm and some Sansakrit put together then created to Thai language. I was born and grew up in Isaan (  Khone kene district, Thailand ) and for sure I went to Thai school since pre-school to university in Thailand. They don't teach Lao in any grade and or any school at all but, I am Louk Lao Khao Neo Isaan and interesting to learn the real Lao. My Lao friend in Vientiane (1971 ) sent me a book of Lao grammar and i started from there to study Lao by my self. I can write and read as same as Lao Vientiane. I taught Lao alphabets to many of my Lao Isaan friends to back then.

TO: LAO ISAN. HERE'S A BIG APPLAUSE AND THANKS FOR YOUR CONTRIBUTION
ON EXPANDING LAO LANGUAGE. IT IS NOT TRUE THAT WHEN WE SPEAK LAO TO
THAI AND THEY DON'T UNDERSTAND. I THINK WE SHOULD TRY TO SPEAK SLOWER
WHEN WE SPEAK TO THEM. IF THEY STILL DON'T UNDERSTAND, THEY ARE FAKER.
ACTUALLY, LAO ALPHABETIC IS EASIER THAN THAI'S.

Since you claim that you as a Lao Issan can understand south zone of Thailand. Could you translate me this southern Thai story into English word for word for me because I as a central Thai have trouble understanding some of the words. Thank you.

I can understand Thai Isaan, southern, northern and eastern Thai. But the only part of Thai language that I don't understand are those Central Thai language. And I am a Lao-American and I don't speak or write Lao, but I can surely understand the language accept those Central Thai. And I am not saying to be stupid or anything else, that language are just way off different from the rest of Thailand.

I told them I don't understand Thai accent very well. Guess what? Now, all of my Thai friends speak either Lao or English to me.

Thai doesn't understand some of the Lao words the accent wasn't a big problem when Lao speak slowly but the words are still the problem. Like sometimes Lao got confuse with some Thai words like the word "Chalor" it doesn't mean the same as "Salor" in Lao.
