I predict that after 50 years of openness - perhaps due to regime collapse - and political, economic and cultural development, North Korea will become one of the richest and most powerful countries in the world, not including South Korea.
Here are my reasons:
1. Potential for a high quality workforce that is loyal, educated, cheap and efficient.
2. Rich honour-based culture and history.
3. Huge undeveloped areas of fertile land with potential for modern development.
4. Perhaps the most strategic location in North-East Asia for trade, logistics, cultural expansion, etc.
5. Huge potential in undiscovered resources.------ similar to Laos
6. Huge potential as a tourist attraction as a unique totalitarian society, ancient historical center (Goguryeo tombs and Mt baekdu) and for its beautiful mountain scenery (especially combined with the South's modern attractions)
7. Very rich surrounding countries that will offer huge sums of foreign direct investment and look to integrate economies. (especially if South Korea signs FTAs with the US, Europe, Japan, ASEAN and China) ------- In Laos' case, there are Vietnam, China and Thailand to work with
8. Extremely complementary economy to South Korea's and others in the region.
9. A highly stable homogeneous society with huge potential for cultural soft power.
10. Will probably maintain one of the strongest militaries in North-East Asia.
11. Geographic features that favor a export-oriented economy (huge access to coastline and other factors that favor industrial development, North-East China's use of its ports, pipelines and other mainland connections, etc).
12. Finally, a unifying Korean spirit that has demonstrated an unstoppable will for achievement.
Mark my words... those who invest in North Korea as soon as it opens up to the international community will become extremely wealthy. I predict that North Korea will achieve the highest economic growth rates ever recorded in history. I know I'm saving my money for when that time comes.

Yes!! i do agree with you some of it, But first, They the North-Korea has to scrap their Nuclear ambitious and joint the world community. and open the country to the outside world. losing up alitlle bit more Authoritarian regime. i knew that Koean people are very smart people but the North take their country to the wrong way, and starved their own people to dead. they still got along long long way to go if they don't change the way their handle the Afair of the state. Am i right.
Of Course, that is why Lao government went to visit north Korea and supported Kim Jong iL. Any thing in the universe is possible. South Korea and Singapore were poor and their people were living in poverty before then their leaders are smart educated and trained them and made their people studied hard and worked hard so they turn their countries from poverty to rich and the most modern countries in Asia in only few decades. But in the case of north Korea just need time and a lot of time because the north Korea communist system and their foreign policy are corrupted and failed. Kim Jong il isolated north Korea from the world community by being insane to build nuclear and missile program and be sanctioned by the world community. China also was very poor and the Chinese were starved and millions fled China to every countries .China became rich when the US and the western ally ( NATO) stopped the economy sanction against China 50 years ago.So I doubt it as long as Kim Jong Il dynasty rules north Korea so I have to say dynasty because north Korea president transferred power to the son. His father (Kim il Sung) transferred the power to Kim Jong iL and now Kim Jong il is sick and he will transferred the power to his younger son (Kim Jong-un, 26 years old ) who has very little experience in foreign policy and politic.
Well, as I said it will take time for the monkey to be like Albert Einstein and it also take time for a homeless to be like Bill gate my friend.
this guy is very smart monkey but will take time to turn him to become like Albert Einstein.
If god is lucky ,god might be able to do that.
So let turn the homeless to become Bill gate first
It might be easier for Bill gate to become homeless
Not for another 4 and half billion years that how the earth change from bacteria to human today.
before the big bang there was nothing then the big bang and every thing had start ....so any thing is possible. For a few million years the space rocks were very violent and the earth was hit by the comets and large asteroids all the times and now it seem to be calm . May be some day that will happen again .

The day that North Korea become the richest/most powerful country is the day that the world will END.
Very well, the world will end when the sun are running out of the nuclear fusion that is about the next 4 or 5 billion years from now. Then north Korea will be the most powerful country on earth.
North Korea could become rich country like south Korea because north Korea have mineral resources and raw martial and skill workers and technology of military . North Korea could converse those industries into civilian industries and factories for economy. So it depends on north Korea leader and government and their foreign policy to the world .
Any country could be rich that depend on the government and their people. Japan doesn't have any raw martial but they have brain and skill. There are some countries are rich a lot of raw martial but no brain and with corrupted government so the people would never have a good living. The people of north Korea and Cuba are poor and suffering because of bad government using corrupted system and bad foreign policy.

I think we can also put Lao PDR in this category as well!
Cambodia and South Korea have signed several agreements during a visit by the South Korean president.
Cambodian Foreign Minister Hor Namhong says two of the most important deals signed during Thursday's visit by South Korean President Lee Myung-bak cover extradition and the framework for $200 million in development loans from Seoul to Cambodia from 2009 to 2012.
The minister says other agreements concern mineral exploitation and joint mine exploration, investment in forest plantations and climate change.
South Korea's Yonhap news agency says South Korean investment in Cambodia totaled nearly $2.5 billion last year
I think North Korea to become one of the richest and most powerful country unless Lao PDR became as same as Japan's today. I believe wait until next 500 years Lao PDR is not getting to Japan' today.
ANY COUNTRIES WHO ARE STONE-HEADED, OPENLESS, UNCOOPERATIVE AND DISOBEDIENT TO THE MAJORITY OF PEOPLE WILL NEVER BE RICH AND DEVELOPED!
THE MORE YOU ARE OPEN, THE MORE YOU ARE POTENTIALLY HELPED AND DEVELOPED. "MANY HANDS MAKE LIGHT WORK" -HOW MANY HANDS HAS NORTH KOREA GOT NOW??
Lao people are very disappointed that they have been dragged into this situation without knowing any thing. LPDR should inform the people and let them vote for it before making any decision by themselves. Any thing Lao people should have the right to know and the right to vote for.
