(KPL) Laos and Myanmar have agreed on building a bridge across the Mekong river between their countries.
The decision contained in an agreement signed by the two sides last week in Naypyidaw Capital of Myanmar.
The two sides will mobilise financial support from a third country for conducting the construction of the bridge.
The 9th meeting of the Laos and Myanmar Co-operation Committees was held for three days on 17-20 November, under the co-chairmanship of Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Thongloun Sisoulith and his Myanmar counterpart Mr U Nyan Win. During the visit to Myanmar by a Lao high-ranking delegation, the two sides also signed two other agreements on visa exemption for people carrying private passports and avoidance of double taxation between the two countries.
During the meeting, the two sides have agreed to further cooperation on a wide range of issues, especially communication, trade, tourism, sport and culture, aiming at further strengthening the traditional friendly relations between the two neighbours. Both sides also agreed to organise week-end trade fair along the common border to promote trade between local people of the two countries.
Myanmar has recently provided a number of tractors to help the Lao Agriculture and Forestry Centre in Tonpheung district, northern province of Bokeo, and also plans to cooperate in personnel development.
Foreign Minister Thongloun also paid a courtesy visit to Prime Minister Gen. Then Sen.Laos would be the host of the next 10th meeting of Laos and Myanmar Co-operation Committees in 2010.
