Ateneo(PHILIPPINES) is Asian debating champion again
By Mahar Mangahas Philippine Daily Inquirer First Posted 00:39:00 05/23/2009
Filed Under: Education, University, Sport, Billiards and Snooker and Pool
This week’s report is on recent good news and bad news in sports.
Good news: winning in international debate. Last Tuesday in Dhaka, Ateneo de Manila University defeated Nanyang Technological University (of Singapore) to win the 2009 Asian Universities Debating Championship (AUDC), hosted by the East West University of Bangladesh.
In the final match, Ateneo’s A-team of Gica Mangahas, Steph Co and Shiveena Parmanand successfully opposed the motion: “This house believes that emigration of the best and the brightest from poor countries to the first world is beneficial for both types of countries.” They got the nod of seven of the nine judges to become the first all-woman team to win the championship. Gica Mangahas was named the second-best speaker of the tournament.
Debating is a sport. Sides of a proposition (affirmative/government versus negative/opposition) are assigned at random. Each side has 30 minutes to prepare, each main speech is limited to seven minutes, and a reply is limited to four minutes. The order of speakers is: government leader, opposition leader, government deputy, opposition deputy, government whip, opposition whip, opposition reply, government reply. Speakers are graded according to “matter” or substantive arguments, “manner” or style of delivery, and “method” or organization of the presentation.
A school may send up to three teams, seeded as team-A, team-B, and team-C. A typical AUDC involves over 100 teams, from over 50 schools, of which the great majority use English as a medium. After seven preliminary matches, the top 16 teams are said to “break,” and are seeded in quarterfinals according to their performance in the prelims.
At this year’s break, the top seven teams were, in order: National University of Singapore (NUS)-A, Nanyang-A, University of the Philippines Diliman-A, Ateneo-A, International Islamic University (of Malaysia)-A, Ateneo-B, and Ateneo-C. Other Philippine teams that broke were from UP Manila and De La Salle University. In the entire tournament, Ateneo was the only school whose teams all broke.
But third-seeded UP Diliman-A lost, unfortunately, to NUS-B in the quarters. In a close semi-finals match, Ateneo-A defeated top seed NUS-A, by getting the votes of three of the five judges.
The Ateneo Debate Society (ADS), founded in 1991, is Asia’s most awarded debate institution. It has won eight out of 10 National Debate Championships. The ADS is both a varsity team and a service-oriented student organization, that also trains debaters from other schools, public and private. It is one of the top 10 debate societies in the world.
During 1994-2004, Ateneo took part in the All-Asian Intervarsity Debating Championships. In seven of those years, the champions were Filipino: Ateneo in 1994, 2002, 2003 and 2004, the University of Santo Tomas in 1997 and 1999, and the University of the Philippines in 2001. Other winners were Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia in 1995, International Islamic University Malaysia in 1996 and 1998, and National University of Singapore in 2000.
In 2005, Ateneo joined some other schools with strong debating traditions in setting up AUDC as an alternate league. It won AUDC championships in 2005 in Singapore, in 2006 in the Philippines (in an Ateneo-A versus Ateneo-B final), and in 2007 in Indonesia, but lost to Nanyang Technological University in 2008 in Malaysia. Last Tuesday’s final was an Ateneo-Nanyang rematch.
Sending debaters to three international tournaments a year—“Asians,” “Australasians” (adding Australia and New Zealand), and “Worlds”—is expensive. I know this by having contributed two sons and a daughter to the Ateneo international debating teams, from the time when school funds were minimal, and families financed almost all the costs. (That’s what families do for children in world-level sports, right?) So I join the ADS in sincerely thanking Mr. Manny Pangilinan and the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company for sponsoring such costs since a few years ago.

One variety can withstand floods, another can survive drought and the third has a high salt tolerance. It will also help them boost their yield in difficult planting conditions, thus helping the country become less dependent on rice imports.

Nancy Novogrod, editor-in-chief of Travel + Leisure, said: “This year’s results reflect our readers’ travel interests in this challenging economic reality—value, intimacy, service, and discovery are top priorities. As for that so-last-August-sounding word, luxury, it’s all about enclaves that shelter stealth wealth, from Amankora Paro in Bhutan to San Ysidro Ranch in California, where casual and laid-back are the names of the game. Dramatically sited outposts like Jade Mountain, in St. Lucia, rank high, and an adventurous spirit also prevails at places such as Bushmans Kloof, in the Cedar Mountains of South Africa. For a number of top-ranked cities—Udaipur, Cape Town, Bangkok, Buenos Aires, Chiang Mai, and Luang Prabang—value ratings were sky-high. And while so many far-flung metropolises made a strong showing, they did not entirely steal the show; old favorites, like T+L’s hometown, New York City, as well as Florence, Rome, and San Francisco remain in the top 10 overall.”

The First Thai Young Composer Narong Prangcharoen WON the Annapolis Charter 300 Young Composers Competition Friday, June 13, 2008
Mr. R. Lee Streby, President of Annapolis Symphony Orchestra(ASO), has recently announced that a talented Thai young composer Narong Prangcharoen, has won the world-class award, distinguished by international jurors to be the WINNER of the ANNAPOLIS CHARTER 300 YOUNG COMPOSER'S COMPETITION from the piece in Thai name “Tri Sattawat”. With 6 votes from 7 final round jurors, Narong Prangcharoen is clearly the winner of the competition. He has also won the audience and musician votes that were collected and tabulated by the surveys.
As the Winner, Narong will receive in total of $10,000 and his work will be recorded in Charter 300 Commemorative Recording 2008 by the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra, together with historical masterworks composed by Arcangelo Corelli (1708), Ludwig van Beethoven (1808), Joseph-Maurice Ravel(1908) and Narong for 2008. “Tri Sattawat” will be performed live on stage for the world recognition on November 7th and 8th, 2008 which is the same period when the Charter was signed in November 1708.
Narong will collect the award on 7 November 2008 at Annapolis, Maryland – USA. It is not only his pride as the Winner, but also his pride for Thailand.
Background: ANNAPOLIS CHARTER 300 YOUNG COMPOSERS COMPETITION The Annapolis Symphony Orchestra announced the last four finalists of Annapolis Charter 300 Young Composers Competition. The four finalists represent a diverse group of gifted composers that were selected from over a hundred international applicants by the competition's first round jury of music professionals. The four finalists are 25 years old composer Jacob Bancks from Chicago, IL ; 33 years old Kristin Kuster from New York, NY; 25 years old Dan Visconti from Arlington, VA; and 33 years old Narong Prangcharoen from Thailand (also residing in Kansas City, MO).
Each finalist has received a $5,000 commission to write one new orchestral piece for the ASO to use as a cultural celebration of the City of Annapolis' 300th Charter Centennial in 2008. All four works will be given World Premiere performances during the ASO's 2007-2008 Lexus Classic Series concerts at Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts. The winner will receive an additional $5,000 honorarium and recording opportunity.
The first round jury panel consisted of: José-Luis Novo, ASO Music Director Kathryn Alexander, Associate Professor of Music (Composition/Music Technology), Yale University, Department of Music Gabriela Lena Frank, Composer James Ross, Associate Professor of Conducting and Director of Orchestral Activities, University of Maryland, School of Music Ricardo Zohn-Muldoon, Associate Professor of Composition, University of Rochester, Eastman School of Music. From January through March, the five members of the first round jury evaluated representative musical scores and recordings by the applicants, each anonymously labeled without any personal identifying information. The composers were narrowed to the final four through a deliberation process agreed upon by the jurors themselves. As each finalist's competition piece is premiered during the ASO’s 2007-2008 concerts, a unique second round jury process will be used to determine the ultimate title winner. The composer earning the most votes from diverse sources, including music experts, musicians, and audiences, will be named the winner, and receive an additional $5,000 cash prize and the opportunity to have their work included on a planned Charter 300 Commemorative Recording by the orchestra in 2008, alongside masterworks marking cultural history, composed in 1708, 1808, and 1908 respectively.
At ASO season finale performances, with much excitement and joy, Maestro Novo announced the names of the distinguished expert jurors in the final round of the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra Charter 300 Young Composers Competition. The world-class panel will help choose the winner from among the four finalists are:
MARIN ALSOP, MUSIC DIRECTOR, BALTIMORE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
GERARD SCHWARZ, MUSIC DIRECTOR, SEATTLE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA, EASTERN MUSIC FESTIVAL
BRIGHT SHENG, COMPOSER
JOSHUA KOSMAN, MUSIC CRITIC, SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE
JOSÉ-LUIS NOVO, MUSIC DIRECTOR, ANNAPOLIS SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA, BINGHAMTON PHILHARMONIC
Copies of the final scores and the premiere archive recordings will be shipped to the panelists, and the staff will be tallying the final musician and audience votes. The winning composer piece will be scheduled to be performed again by the ASO on November 7-8, 2008, to be part of the Charter 300 live recording concerts.
Thai composer wins coveted ASO award After a yearlong competition, a Thai composer has won a coveted award from the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra.
Narong Prangcharoen is the winner of the Annapolis Charter 300 Young Composers Competition, besting three other finalists and taking the $5,000 prize. He'll also get the chance to have his nine-minute work, "Tri-Sattawat" ("Three Centuries"), included on the ASO's first professional recording, which will be out in late 2008 or early 2009, according to the symphony. "We're proud and thrilled," said symphony President Lee Streby. "There was a very tight competition." Mr. Prangcharoen is currently in Thailand, but issued a statement to the ASO via e-mail that read in part: "It is one of the great honors in my life to be part of this historical project. I have wonderful memories from my Annapolis visit in February (when his work was performed)." Mr. Prangcharoen got six of a possible seven votes to win. Five music experts weighed in - including ASO Music Director Jose-Luis Novo and Baltimore Symphony Orchestra Music Director Marin Alsop - as did audiences and the symphony's musicians. The audiences filled out surveys after the four works in the competition were performed this season, and these were compiled into one vote, as were the opinions of the musicians. The three other finalists were Dan Visconti, Jacob Bancks and Kristin Kuster. Interestingly, Mr. Prangcharoen was the only one of the four who hadn't visited Annapolis before the works were performed.
Mr. Streby said Mr. Prangcharoen will be back in the city in November when the recording is made at two live concerts.

To our fellow asian brod and sis, pls post also your accomplishments so that everybody will know that each of our country has its share of glory. There is no one winner.
